  1. A bit perplexed with this spot.
I wouldn't come here for fast-food takeout options (it's just too pricey). And not doubly as good as other takeout spots.

However, their off menu options, especially with their special house dumplings (pork and shrimp) are out of this world!

I'll keep it short. If you plan on going, just ask them to make their own chef's choices. You pick the meat, and they'll do the rest. You won't be disappointed.

  2. North America boasts an estimated 40,000 Chinese restaurants and it seems everyone swears by their favorite.  Ridgewood is no exception, and Yelp tells me that Bamboo House is #1 rated in town.  With all the glowing 5 star reviews, I decided to see what the hubbub is about.  I like divey Chinese take-out  joints and this ramshackle example still has all the late 20th century patina from its 28 year run.  You would think that with all that pedigree, the food would be awesome.  Not! While the proprietor (Sherry) is very pleasant and the menu is thankfully brief and to the point, I found the food to be a 2.5 at best.  I rounded up to 3 based primarily on service and because the dumplings were decent.  We ordered Mom's Dumplings (beef and shrimp), Pork and Corn dumplings, Orange Beef, Young Chow Chow Fun and Chicken Corn soup.  Ok — so the dumplings are tasty — kind of like asian pierogi filled with meat;  the dumpling skins are thin and envelop the meat perfectly.  I would order the pork/corn combo again but the beef/shrimp version (Mom's) was mealy, not as flavorful and lacked texture. That said, I have had better dumplings at dumpling houses in Chinatown and Queens for less money — but this is Ridgewood and convenience counts.  But our dinner went downhill from there.  The soup was tasteless goo, despite a fair dose of shredded chicken. You could barely taste the corn — which should be a prominent flavor, no?  The orange beef was fried to the bejeezus belt and desiccated to a tooth fracturing point. Seriously?  It was impossible to chew and greasy as all get out.  We tossed it after one painful bite.  The chow fun was edible but unpleasant because the noodles were floating in oil thus drowning out the nice selection of protein and vegetables that accompany them. The food truly underwhelmed. I suppose that if I was hung over, or drunk, or looking for asian comfort food at 2am, Bamboo House fare would taste good. But as a usual take out joint for anything other than dumplings, I'm afraid not.

  3. I don't exactly recommend Ridgewood for Chinese food. Well at least Ridgewood, NJ (maybe Ridgewood, Queens, joking joking.) I had some spicy tofu dish and it was OK. The price is a bit much than I'd usually pay but the portion size was good.

I'm putting it at a 3, not since the food was amazing but it's definitely better than your regular take-out Chinese joint. Semi-dirty place with an odd layout as per most take-out Ameri-Chinese places.
