  1. i LOVE LOVE LOVE Orchid. It's the only place nearby that you can get peking duck with al lthe pomp & circumstance it deserves. The restaurant is subterranean, so you already are in another world. There are mirrors, plastic flowers galore, cheesy decor, chandeliers and lots of red and gold.  The walls in the bathroom are upholstered. TIME FROZE down there in Orchid sometime in the 80s or 90s. The waiters wear tuxedos.  I love it love t love it. and all that has nothing to do with the food, which is awesome.  I'd say perhaps not the  BEST chinese I've ever had, but right up there.  The atmosphere is what makes me want to celebrate my birthday here, food is food, and Orchid serves upper scale quality – PLENTY of choices without going over board – and remember – family style, so order 2 or 3 entrees and a rice or noodle dish for 4 or 5 people.. and I will NEVER go without ordering a peking duck… worth every penny of the $47.  makes 6-7 pancake rolls (tableside) and then some how they give you 4 drumsticks… I'd love to see the 4 legged duck,, again, part of the charm. It's like eating dinner in an old chinatown movie set. GO !

Its on Franklin Avenue but park inthe lot behind it – there's a rear entrance – go down the stairs or take the ELEVATOR !

  2. I've been told this place has been here for about 30 years! It looks quite small from the outside but there is an entire restaurant one flight down. This restaurant is extremely fancy for a Chinese restaurant. The wait staff are in suits and there is a coat-check area. Along with the décor, the food was amazing! Some of the most tender meats I have ever tasted and the flavoring was spot on; not too salty, not too sweet. I've been told a lot of famous names come to this place and I can see why. On top of it all the waiters were very friendly and quick without rushing you. Will definitely be going back to this restaurant soon.

  3. There is a lot of decor that is a little outdated but festive.  The service is good and the presentation is beautiful but the food is just not good.  I ordered shrimp which tasted like it swam in a sea of bleach.  The sesame beef just did not taste right.  Will not be returning…plenty of other options in the area.

  4. This is the best sit-down Chinese restaurant on Long Island, period.  It is not a buffet. It is an actual restaurant, complete with waiters… Old School Chinatown style.  Can you get take out here? Sure, but I do not see why you would want to pass up eating in the comfy chairs and seeing the Chinese art that surrounds you.

The food is delicious. The waiters are attentive and friendly and there is really nothing bad  can say about it.

The restaurant is a little bit hard to find and you have to go down a flight of stairs to get into the place, but it is well worth it.

  5. Not for nothing, not the worst and not the best. Doable Chinese good.

Tucked away in the basement leveI, the decor of the restaurant reminds me more of an western type place than chinese.

Service is quick, but the lunch specials are not cheap. $11.00 on average for an entree which includes soup and a bowl of rice. Add the tax and tip and you're looking at $15.00 for the meal.

The portion sizes are average in size,  so if  You're really hungry, don't come here unless you're willing to buy more food. I guess because you're in the Garden City area, you are expected to pay more.

Double sauteed pork, chicken and broccoli were like I said before, passable. The hot and sour soup, ok at best.

Better, tastier and cheaper places to go in the area.
