“The pastrami is fabulous, the hot dogs are second to none and the matzoh ball is soup is like mom used to make.”
“Harold's Deli is famous for their huge sandwiches, and yes, they are truly monstrous.”
“Not on the level of Katz's in NYC, but close enough, and it's nice to have a local place putting out this high quality of a product.”

Every one is entitled to their opinions. But I do not see the big fuss about the prices. First. The meats are fresh and well sliced. The sandwiches are big and prepared very well. The chicken salad was very delicious for homemade. It did not need any additional salt like I normal need to do at other places. So for the food this place is a winner. For $37 dollars 2sandwhiches and couple sodas. It was well worth the money. I like this establishment better than Harold sandwich place.
The decor was of a southern dinner. Amble space for a crowded evening. Small booths though. But plenty space if you opt for table seating
Good place to venture to. I shall return
One of the best Jewish delis in the area. Their matzo ball soup is to die for! Great overstuffed sandwiches! Awesome reubans! Don't forget a black & white cookie for dessert! 🙂
Yes, the prices may be steep, but you are paying for some high quality lean meats here. A corned beef or pastrami sandwich is the way to go for about $16. Light as a feather matzo balls in their soup. Excellent chopped liver and $6 for a choice of knishes. Sweet coleslaw and pickles to start. And don't forget to order a Dr. Browns Celray or cream soda to accompany your meal! Always great service here.
Decent Jewish deli, but unfortunately you may need to mortgage your house to afford their prices. I thought the food was expensive ( 4.99 for a cup of soup or 6.99 for an order of steak fries ) but then I took a peek at their breakfast menu and saw $14 for a spinach omelette…. Is this a farm to table omelette where they grow the spinach and pick it fresh? I don't see a garden in the parking lot. Over $18 for corned beef hash and egg? Come on!
On a positive note, the food is really solid for the most part. The split pea soup was one of the best ever with hints of dill. The potato pancakes were perfect. The brisket was incredibly dry and overcooked, good thing they give some au jus to dip it in otherwise it would not be edible. The pastrami was pretty good, but I don't believe they make it in-house saw it packaged under the counter.
I checked and sadly the prices are just as expensive as Katzs in the city, but located in Livingston NJ
Great long-standing old school delicatessen since 1956 has moved a couple times but still has great sandwiches soups and desserts. Attentive friendly staff. I've been coming here for years and I will continue to. I had a pastrami sandwich with Swiss cheese russian dressing on rye bread. Also had crispy french fries and a cheese blintz. Stay away from the pierogies not good at all.
Solid Jewish deli!
We stopped by Eppes Essen for a quick lunch and it was great! They started us off with a mound of cole slaw and a bowl of dill and sour pickles. Well-made and delicious, I was excited for what was to come next.
Super hungry from the ride to NJ from CT, we both opted for the open-faced reubens. I got a bite of her "classic" (corned beef sauerkraut, melted swiss) but I think my "rollins" (pastrami coleslaw, russian melted swiss) was juicier and tastier. They were a bit on the pricier side though being $20 each.
Service was quick and friendly. The restaurant also has a bustling to-go and take-out area as well. Next time I might try something cheaper like the specialty sandwiches instead.
I grew up in Livingston between the late sixties and early eighties. I'm fifty two now and live in Union County. And I can't remember a time when Eppes Essen hasn't been in my life. From Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, epic take out for late night meetings and great meals on the premises, I've done it all. Now a third generation of Bernstein has the pleasure. The place may have changed owners but it still feels like home to me.
Fancy a great rare roast beef sandwich? Brisket? Foot long dog? Lox, eggs and onions? In this area, Eppes is the place to be. Don't whine to me about the price. I'll gladly pay it for quality eats. Just one criticism. Don't serve chilled condiments! I hate ice cold ketchup, mustard and russian dressing. Take them out before service, pretty please?
Many of my happiest memories are of great meals enjoyed as a kid. The places that I can take my son that I enjoyed long ago are few and far between. I hope Eppes is around for a long time to come.
Got the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches.. Pretty good… But This place is NO Harold's… The prices are astronomical.. I believe I paid almost $40 for two sandwiches… They give u a lot of meat in the sandwiches but it's Not Harold's.. Idk I would prob never go back for this reason..
