  1. The neon "Hot Bagel" called me inside. I knew this wouldn't be the place for a bagel, but there aren't many places around that are good for it.
    This was not the place.
Bagel with cream cheese is cheap, only $2…. but then again, they are not slathering it on like I would like them to.

Hot Food counter looked legit. But they always do, and they never are.

  2. 3.5 stars.

I'm a bit baffled by the many negative reviews of this establishment. This place, in my opinion, really isn't that bad.

Typically, my coworkers and I would get sandwiches (hot or cold), have them toss a salad, or simply raid the buffet. My usual here is the breaded or grilled chicken hot sandwiches. A hero-sized sandwich that will certainly satisfy a large appetite will run you just $7. The $7 includes a can of soda as well. As regulars who frequent the area are well aware, it is rare to spend less than $8 for lunch in the Port Authority Bus Terminal / Times Square area.

Since I am new to the area, having started a new job nearby in March, I haven't gotten a chance to try everything. Naturally, there are items that should be avoided. One such item is the chicken teriyaki found in the buffet area. It is so salty that they probably took a bottle of soy sauce and boiled the chicken in it prior to grilling. Also, I would not purchase candy, gum, or any other "convenience store" item at Village; they really mark the prices up significantly. Instead, I would recommend stopping by the nearby 7-11 and Duane Reade stores, both within 2 blocks of this place.

  3. My office to to a block away from Village 38 so of course I have to check out my corner deli. They have sandwich station, hot buffet, soup, salad and all the quick snacks you need at work hours.

While the selection for hot buffet is decent, there is not a lot of healthier options. The price is reasonable and they have seating upstairs too. Never tried their sushi or Asian section so I can't testify for those. Would definitely come back to try their sandwiches.

  4. Everything that you would expect from a Korean-owned deli. They do a lot of things well, but nothing outstanding. I like stopping by for the breakfast buffet by the pound because egg whites and bacon don't weigh much. Skip the sandwich line, that roll ain't too good for you anyway!

Iced coffee is ridiculously overpriced but really convenient and quite good. Damnit.

Also, you can count on an exorbitant amount of salmon, grilled chicken, and steamed veggies at the hot bar around lunch time. Not remarkable by flavor standards, but ideal for the low-carb life.

  5. Not your finest deli…but cheap nonetheless.

I came here on a whim. I was starving for breakfast, and this place seemed to have everything. They had a hot food bar in the back, a sandwich bar, and a few coolers of overpriced drinks.

The food bar looked very unappetizing, like it had been sitting their for a while, so I settled for the sandwich bar. My egg white sandwich with ham was cheap (like $4), but still sloppily made. Not the most friendliest service, which is probably why I will not be going out of my way to come back here again.

  6. I had lots of time to kill starting at about 8:50 a.m. today and it was too cold to just walk around aimlessly, plus I hadn't eaten breakfast and this place beckoned.  It turned out that they were just finishing putting out all the food at the hot food bar, so I ended up eating lunch for breakfast.  Since I don't eat beef or chicken, the options were somewhat limited (and carb-heavy).  However, everything tasted really good (it was also the usual pricey $7.99/pound).  The guy putting out the food was very sweet-natured and the cashiers were very friendly.  One of them seemed to know a lot of the customers and they exchanged friendly banter.

There were many tempting-looking/large cookies and other dessert items.  There are a few (high) chairs at a counter by the window, but I ate in their upstairs eating area (not huge, but a decent size).  Also, the restroom was clean and this place has an "A" rating from the Health Department.

  7. I came here for a late lunch. The salad station was closed.. I came just after 3..

I ended up having the sushi. The sushi I had was spicy salmon.. and spicy it was.. its got a real kick! There was no service to really speak of

  8. So this is no fancy joint, but it's an ok place to pop in and grab a bagel and basically anything else you can think of.

You can prop yourself on  stool and watch the Midtowners and the myriads of tourists do their thing. This was our first official breakfast stop Stateside. The bagel was fresh, light and doughy on the inside with a crispy shell which was slapped with generous amounts of cream cheese.

I also grabbed a fruit salad which was fresh.

Coffee , well , not what I am used to, and yet to taste a cup that make me go…mmmm yeh…that's good coffee…or is that caaawwfffeeeee.
