  1. Found this diner gem through Yelp of course. My fiancé and I stopped here on our road-trip across America (NY to AZ) and we had brunch since it was like 11:30AM at this point. We both ordered BLTs but I ordered the disco fries, well-done, which came with mozzarella cheese and beef gravy – so freaking good. It was a really hearty, flavorful gravy and the fries were crunchy like I like. BUT, that's not what I'm here to talk about – I'm here to tell you about that pasta salad that came with my meal. I don't know what was on those multicolored rotini noodles but whatever it was, I loved it. I couldn't stop eating. Was it just oil or butter and a little Parmesan? Maybe, Idk. Or maybe I just like carbs? Yes, probably. My fiancé didn't want her side salad so I made her order the cucumber salad which tasted like a pickle salad so no one ate it. The prices were really cheap and the portions were huge, I felt so guilty leaving the amount of food uneaten that I did but since we were traveling, I couldn't take it with me. I would recommend to anyone in the area, it's a good, solid diner.

  2. Great diner well representative of NJ diners with food items that aren't so crazy large that you feel sick.

Food: Ordered the usuals and it was cooked quick using real eggs.  No complaints on diner food.  Their coffee is also really good and had no issues drinking it black.

Decor: Typical NJ diner with lots of booths and seating.  I didn't feel crowded here and lots of space.

Price: Under $10 per plate, well priced

Service: Fantastic.  Attentive and they swapped out my coffee because it got cold without me even asking.

Notables: Nothing extra special to note here.

Will have no troubling coming back here again and again.  Classic staple NJ diner.

  3. Growing up in Union, you didn't lack in nearby diners: taking the trek out on 22 brought you to Union Plaza, those around the town center might flock to the Mark Twain, and near the high school is the Huck Finn.

Going strong at this location for over 20 years (though I'm pretty sure there has been some kind of diner here for the past 4 decades), the Huck Finn is a typical North Jersey diner: busy while rarely being packed, plenty of menu options, and open-all-night. Just about everything on the menu is 'alright' to 'good', but I wouldn't call anything really 'great' (cream of turkey soup and their towering desserts aside. Yum).

Some dishes work better than others, with the leg of lamb and prime rib specials on weekends a stronger choice than Italian dishes, though they have in the past boasted a pretty tasty carbonara. Come late night, few things top a nicely charred burger and fries.

Times may change (they even added a salad bar in recent years!), but when you get down to it, the Huck Finn remains a local institution.

  4. Major improvement since the last time I been here 2 years ago. They have more food choices for breakfast and dinner. I like when a diner has a creative breakfast menu. It was hard for me to decide what to get. I went with 3 others, and everyone loved their choices. I has steak and eggs, my friend had a funky french toast dish with si mores. You would swear it was dessert. We all tried one another's food, and were pleased as well. If ever I am in the mood to pig out late night, I will be stopping by.

  5. Well…It's a diner. It has food. It's fine. Wasn't really impressed with the quality of their food but I will say that prices were fair. The chicken wings were crispy and tasty. My grape leaves were bruised (definitely canned) and were missing the yogurt sauce. The Reuben was huge but poorly put together. I'd go back if need be.

  6. This diner is the closest to my house, so it is the one I go to most often. The service is fast, and the prices are good. They do have a liquor license, but I've never ordered diner liquor before. I usually get poached eggs if I order breakfast, and the yolk is almost always runny and good. I like the tuna melts, too. The pasta salad is great, so when they ask if you want pasta salad, cucumber salad, or cole slaw – go with the pasta salad.

  7. Our server was attentive and very prompt. I ordered a typical breakfast sandwich and it was ok.

  8. I'm starting to love these Jersey diners. The atmosphere alone is comfortable and homey-like. From the outside, Huck Finn Diner seems a bit ordinary, but inside, it's spacious and pretty modern.

Fried Calamari (B+): Crispy and crunchy. It's served with a marinara sauce that was rich and not overly tangy. The amount of calamari my table received was generous for it's price. My only complaint is that they were rather small and a bit on the thin side.

Monte Cristo (B): It's a solid Monte Cristo, but it falls short of my expectations. Quantity wise, not for the big eaters. I was hoping for something along the lines of two slices of Texas toast with plenty of meat and cheese in the middle but I guess that was wishful thinking. Without the syrup, it's nothing special. With the syrup, it's a sweet nothing special. Speaking of syrup, seeing two small plastic containers of Smucker's syrup was a turnoff. I was expecting at least a glass syrup container since this was a diner, but I guess I was wrong. But hey, at least the fries were good, right? You get a choice between cole slaw and pasta salad; I picked the cole slaw. My advice: Don't get the cole slaw.

Service (B-/borderline C+): Not the greatest. Actually, it was irritating. I feel compelled to downgrade the service just thinking about it. It took 25 minutes to get a waitress to walk over to my table. Right when I was about to leave, she randomly walks away for another minute. When I was a few bites away to finishing my order, she tells me that the cooks were too busy and forgot my appetizer. She told she could remove it from my check, so I told her that I didn't want it anymore, but she decides to serve it to me anyway. There were only a handful of people there and they were all already eating.

The older gentleman working the cashier didn't seem too friendly. He rung up my meal without saying a word. No "hello" or "thank you" or "hope to see you again" was mentioned at all; he just took my money. I'm interested in dining here again but service needs work.
