  1. This gets 3 stars for the scene alone.  Sadly, the food cannot bump it up more.

A table full of Civil War enthusiasts dressed in full garb in the back.  The surly old timers wondering how the heck i got there (thanks yelp app!).  Women with big hair and louder voices., and guys in their tightest bedazzled shirt fist pumping their way through dinner.  This is a NJ diner experience for sure!

The pics along the front wall of the restaurant are an impressive compilation in regards to the historical importance of this place.  Many peeps, some famous and some just from the neighborhood, have passed through the doors and stared longingly at the rotating tower of desserts (not just the stoned high schoolers, but everyone).

The menu was surprisingly large, and also included my personal all-time fave, the phat sandwiches.  But since i had to board a plane soon after, I couldn't afford to eat one and have to apologize to my seat neighbors later.  Feeling kinda brekkie at 5pm, i went with among other things, pancakes.  They were nothing great, and the meatloaf sandwich i tried was a little dry.  I was disappointed.

The place was nice and clean and the bathrooms were exquisite.  I was very impressed with them.  If I had a top 10 list of cleanest bathrooms in America, i wouldn't hesitate to add this gem.   My only regret is if the food were better, it would've been the perfect experience.   If i ever the opportunity to come back, i will try some other things on the menu.

  2. As far as diners go, the Reo is top notch. We came here on a Sunday evening to meet our wedding photographer.

We were quickly seated in the back of the diner and brought our drinks by our very friendly waitress. She seemed to realize we were in a meeting and left us to ourselves until we wrapped up with them, which was very thoughtful of her

We decided to stay to eat after the photographers left and no one at the table was disappointed. Like any good diner menu, the options were endless. All day breakfast, sandwiches, wraps, panini, club sandwiches and even "fat" sandwiches.

I got a turkey club sandwich on toasted wheat bread. The bacon as well as the French fries were crispy, non greasy perfection. The icing on the proverbial cake was the cup of thick and flavorful brown gravy that I just can't eat fries without at a diner.

You can't beat a $50 check for dinner for 5 people…that's what's so great about a diner.  I would certainly return to the Reo when I'm in the area.

  3. My husband and I came in for breakfast on a Sunday and were seated right away. I ordered one egg over medium with bacon and it came with home fries and toast. The over medium was closer to over easy but the bacon was perfect- not burnt and dry and not soggy. The toast was way over buttered to the point that the bread was actually breaking apart when you picked it up because it was so saturated and heavy. I usually ask for butter on the side and that is definitely necessary for this place unless you like wet soggy toast. The home fries were good but burnt on the bottom like they weren't turned/tossed frequently enough.

Husband's Spanish Omelet was large and good. He enjoyed it. Our server was quick and friendly.

Overall, a good diner experience and a solid 3 stars.

  4. I've been to the Reo Diner a handful of times over the last few months. I can't say that it's great, nor can I say that it's bad. What I can say, is that, well, it's a diner and you get what you pay for. The food is cheap but tasty, the staff is friendly enough, and they are open 24 hours, a huge plus for Jersey diners. I have yet to find a diner that I really like in this area; therefore, Reo has found a place at the top of my diner list.

  5. Good diner food. The reuben was well made and definitely something I would recommend.

The rolls that come out in the beginning were a nice touch. Usually you get some nasty bread but the rolls were soft and delicious.

Only gave three stars since it is a diner and there was nothing special about it. That being said i would recommend it to anyone looking for a good hearty meal at a good price.

  6. Yelp's A-OK description is spot on. Its a typical diner and nothing really stood out to me.

    The Good:

Rock bottom prices for lots of food. Even though the quality is average, the portion is generous and the even more generous is the price. Service was fast and friendly, and there were free refills on the lemonade.

    The Bad:

Nothing outright bad to speak of.

    Conclusion:

Feel free to stop here for a bite to eat. I would come through again.

  7. Average diner but I just expect more from Jersey. I ordered 1 egg, two juicy sausage links, home fries and rye toast.  A hearty breakfast for only $5.35.  But they charged me $1.45 for a hot water with lemon.  That's not tea.  Tea has a tea bag.  I'm not a cheapskate, I didn't even complain to the waitress.  I just thought it was disappointing.

  8. If you're going to have a full course dinner at a diner, then this would seem to be the place to go.  The main course may not be what a good, good restaurant serves but you will have a decent meal, at a reasonable price, and either leave the place with a doggie bag or feeling extremely full.  For a smaller eater, and I am not one, you will probably leave feeling very full and also with the doggie bag.

The dinner specials all come with soup, salad bar, and dessert.  I thought their salad bar was great.  It had a Greek salad, creamed herring, peel and eat shrimp, beets, and the rest of the items that one finds on most salad bars.

For my main, I had the twin filet of sole stiffed with crab meat.  I was glad to see that it was not drenched in butter like at so many other diners.  My M-I-L and the twin tilapia and said it was very good grilled.  Unfortunately, my crab meat stuffing was more bread filler than anything else and that was a little disappointing.

Our server was extremely accommodating and most helpful.

Obviously if you are looking to dine then go to a "restaurant" but if you have been on the road all day like we were, are starving, and want to have a decent dinner without frills then this "diner" is it.
