  1. Four Stars based on the fact that this is a diner, and I don't expect the same that I would get from a restaurant.  Although the sign says Pilgrim Diner & Restaurant, it is really a diner, but one of the best I've been to.

I stopped in last night and had a Porterhouse steak at 2am.  For only $20, it came with a pretty nice side salad, soup (try getting soup at 2am at any other diner), and a nice plate of disco fries on the side. The steak was cooked perfectly.  Wasn't overcooked in the slightest.

I was greeted warmly by the manager, and got excellent service from my server. And, I had a birch beer with my steak.  This is the quintessential upscale diner.

  2. I've been here a few times with friends usually after a late night out because of the late hours it stays open. Its has a wide  varied menu of what you'd expect from a diner. My favorite thing here is the waffle fries, they're nice and crispy. Everything else I've had here is ok, nothing mind blowing. Its nice and spacious so there is plenty of seating and the booths look like they can hold 6. mens room was pretty clean.

The only thing holding the score back is the average food and the staff, someone should get them some prozac because the waitress, host, even the cashier seem like they're depressed. Our waitress wasn't mean but man she was down. It was 8 pm and she said shes on duty til 7 am so I feel for her.

Decent enough spot though, my crew and I surely will be back as we have. Maybe I can bump it up a star then.

  3. We first went to the Pilgrim Diner back when we lived in Essex County, but hadn't been there in years.  Since, it went under new management, and the diner as it is today is far better than it was in the past.  We like the service (wait staff will usually be nice to guests, when the guests are courteous, as well), and the food was excellent.  I love halibut and have never had grilled halibut as good as here.  Their drinks (martinis) were nicely made and a perfect size.  This has become our go-to place.

  4. Phew! I actually had to wait a few days after going here to gather my thoughts about this place before I really let loose…
So we came here on a Friday night just wanting diner food, it had definitely been awhile since the last time we were here when it was a train wreck but we figured let's give it another chance…
    Terrible idea.
First of all the place was practically dead, for a Friday night that's a bad sign, and it's not like we weren't there during prime time, I think we got there at 8:00..
Anyways then we got this waitress, HO. LY. SH. IT. So her hand was hurting and literally every single time she came over to the table she was openly expressing her pain by putting her arm over her head and like making these loud guttural noises like "OHHHH, OWWWWW" "OH MY GODDDDDE, UHHHHHHH" she was grunting, seething, gasping and practically screeching. It was so fucking awkward and awful….
Like seriously lady if you are in that much pain (which was honestly debatable because of how much she was carrying on it was really incredible the histrionics) please go to the emergency room! When I was a waitress I literally cut the tip of my finger so bad, I left to go to the er to get stitches and came back to work four hours later and just dealt with the pain. I would never openly scream and carry on in front of my customers. So unprofessional. And not only that but she was talking out loud and saying how she was getting shit tips all night and complaining, wow! I wonder why! Maybe everyone was so turned off by how she was acting..
So now, the food was also just gross. We ordered burgers and they tasted like nothing. The fries were decent but those are really hard to fuck up…I'm so upset because this is definitely the very last time we will come here. And what a shame, this place used to be so good and now it is horrid.
Please save yourself the awkwardness and aggravation and go somewhere else. There are plenty of other great diners and this just isn't one of them anymore.

  5. Good spot for late night eats. Went with the chicken fingers which was just deep fried chicken on a plate. No frills. For a late night bite presentation doesn't matter much!

My girlfriend ordered mozzarella cheese fries. While they were average overall, the cheese was not evenly distributed and some of the cheese and fries were burnt.

Atmosphere is your typical NJ diner.

  6. Service mediocre, hostess lady is the grouchiest of all, food is, well, typical diner, so so, get the eggs with toast, very exciting

  7. New Jersey essentially created the diner culture so any one that is here is held to a much higher standard. With that in mind, this place is decent but by no means anything special. Typical diner fare (as expected) and typically greasy (as all diners are). The service is very sub-par (it appears they higher all the elder family members to be waitresses). Our waitress forgot parts of our order 4 times and even brought things out sparatically and on a plate by plate basis even though you could tell they were all ready at once as the later plates came out cold. With that said, it's the only real diner in the area so it's always a solid choice.

  8. I'm actually really shocked by the previous reviews. This is your classic NJ diner, not Ruth Chris lol. Been coming here since before I can remember for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and late night snacks. Always have great food and have never been disappointed. Staff can be a little abrupt some times but nothing that would keep me away.

Wraps are awesome, fries are always a win, and when in doubt get the tuna melt.
