  1. It's a diner, complete with ginormous menu, display case of cakes and desserts, breakfast all day, seating at booths, tables, and counters, and even a salad bar.

Prices aren't the rock bottom deals many similar establishments offer.  Portions are rather hefty, but most meals run about $10.75.  Service is ok – friendly, but not with much hustle.  My last trip had an order glitch (buttered white toast instead of dry rye) which while absolutely trivial and easy to fix took a bit of time and was just a nuisance.

Glad to have a diner in walking distance of home.  I won't be exalting Galaxy as Jersey's best, but it certainly gets the job done.

  2. A typical diner, or so I'm told.  This place was hot, like lets not use the air conditioner to save on bills, hot.  My food was not good and it was cold but it was a New Jersey experience I had wanted. And I got it!

My friend was pleased as punch to have a chocolate egg cream.  She had lived on the east coast before so she knew what we were getting into.  The foodie in me was determined to give the local fare a shot, so I ordered a burger and fries with a New Jersey touch. Taylor ham is a staple of life in New Jersey. Go in any Jersey diner for breakfast and you will have your choice of eggs, any style, with bacon, sausage or Taylor ham. For the uninitiated, Taylor ham is actually the brand name for pork roll. John Taylor invented the original Taylor ham in Trenton, New Jersey in the late 1800s. Another jersey thing…Disco fries. French fries topped with brown gravy and cheese curds.

Service was cordial, but the waitress didn't seem at all interested in being there.  The food came fast.  Too fast.

The burger was good. Average good.  My fries tasted old and they were cold, so was the gravy.  I was disappointed but happy I got to try out taylor ham and disco fries.  If you're not a native, give it a whirl!

  3. Tell me this doesn't tickle your pickle: eating pancakes while getting absurdly drunk. C'mon that's awesome. And should you want to do that, you can come to Galaxy Diner.

Now check this out: Most diners serve waffles. And most diners serve fried chicken. But most diners don't offer waffles with fried chicken, made famous by Harlem and other areas of the country.

Galaxy Diner does. And it was awesome. With syrup and hot sauce in hand, I just celebrated my birthday eating chicken and waffles. All thanks to Galaxy.

So if you want to either get drunk and eat breakfast foods and/or have waffles and fried chicken, I can assume that if you live in the area, Galaxy is where you'll go.

  4. the food in Galaxy dinner is not fresh, and uncleaned. As soon as we walked in to the restaurant, I immediately saw stains on the old carpet in the restaurant, and the dust, mildew residuals on the window blinds. When the waitress served our food, the plates were dirty and chipped, including my plastic cup of water. please please please do not go there unless you want to get sick.

  5. By all that is good and fuzzy, what a difference four years can make!  During my last visit to this diner, business was robust, food was good, service was fantastic and there was generally a fantastic vibe to the place.

On my most recent visit, you could tell things have gone downhill to the extreme.

First, the place was nearly empty  on a Sunday afternoon – which is odd for most diners in New Jersey.  Second (and I confess I didn't notice a lot of this until I went to the rest room and walked through the length of the restaurant) they are simply *missing* a lot of things you'd expect in a diner.  The glass case that would normally have candy?  Some odd gum brand I've never heard of and receipts.  The glass case that would've normally had fresh pastries in it?  Half full of a sad collection of prepackaged pastries (what is this, a bodega?).  The cake stands – all empty.  Also normally the area behind the counter should be stocked up with…something, be it packets of hot chocolate or other products, but this one was conspicuously empty.

Then the rest room itself – they have soap dispensers mounted on the walls – with no soap in them.  Instead, bottles of soap were on the side of the sink.  Want towels to dry your hands?  Sorry – there was just a roll of toilet paper by the sink.  In old Chinatown restaurants this is expected, in a diner in New Jersey not so much.

I will say this – service was good.  Our waitress was very friendly and genuinely seemed like she wanted to make our experience a good one.  Unfortunately, she had to contend with a kitchen that was out of wraps (which my girlfriend was going to order), cajun waffle fries and onion rings.  It was a comedy of errors as I kept asking for stuff and she kept telling me they were out.

I finally settled on a turkey burger with fries and chili on top.  The burger was…okay.  I've made better at home.  There was some sad iceberg lettuce in it but at least it was filling.  The fries were…okay, nothing great – but the chili on top was (I am convinced) not chili but sloppy joe or Manwich mix.  It didn't have any heat or thickness of chili and there were no beans.  It was just ground beef, sweet tomato sauce and some bits of onions.  Speaking of tomatoes, the ketchup we were given was "America's Best" or something like that (a supermarket brand) and literally dribbled out of the squeeze bottle as soon as I pointed it down.  Contrast that with the table next to us who had a nice bottle of Heinz.  Go figure.

By the time we left, I felt sad.  The cashier actually asked me how everything was and frankly, I didn't have the heart to go into a verbal tirade in front of other customers.  Galaxy used to be better than this, but sadly now it's a place to avoid.

  6. I rarely give one star reviews, mainly because we do our research on places and  a good meal should not be left to chance!
We have been to this diner before, my husband has been been coming here for at least 20 plus years, the last time we visited was over a year ago, and it was a solid Jersey diner.
We came for breakfast on a Saturday morning and the lot was crowded, we were hoping it wasn't going to be bad inside, plenty of seats, seated immediately. The waitress came by took our drink and food orders …. took about 15 minutes for a coffee and hot chocolate to come, OK get a pass on that one, but not giving up hope at this point. Now approaching 30 minutes into being seated, people who had come after us had been served food, and they had sent the bacon back, overhearing the conversation …. this doesn't even look like bacon. The waitress comes to apologize to us, stating they just got slammed in the kitchen. We started doing a little Yelp research, seeing the low ratings they had gotten recently. Now broaching 35 minutes into being seated and still no food, we were going to bail, and the food arrived. We should have left.
The order was improperly cooked – I had one egg (over medium) with bacon and potato hash. Egg was barely an over easy, bacon was soggy. My husband ordered a ham & cheese omelette with french fries and a side of brown gravy. Instead he got an omelette which was runny and potato hash. The order was written correctly, the kitchen obviously did not care about what was on the ticket to send out the right order. Shame.
The waitress was very apologetic about us having to wait, she comped us our drinks.
Unfortunately new ownership does not seem to care about its patrons, or the food they put out.

  7. This was a tough call.  2 stars seems mean and harsh but 3 stars is just too generous.  This diner wasn't "A-OK" in my book, so I have to rate it honestly.  It's a 2 star diner, maybe 2.5 at most.

Galaxy offers sub-par diner food that was waaaay too greasy and undercooked.  We now understand why Denny's down the street had a half hour wait while we were able to sit down here right away.  Typical mediocre diner– the waitress that disappears even though it's not particularly busy, food that gives you a stomach ache and sits at the pit of your stomach for hours, questionable cleanliness.

I have no desire to come back here and wouldn't recommend this place.  It's Jersey, there's a million and one diners that are probably a million and one times better than this place.

  8. Yeah I don't think so.  This place is close to me and after my 3rd visit here, its my last.  The place is aging – the carpets are just beyond filthy and when I grabbed the back of my chair to move it, it was sticky.  The food is not good either; I guess if you're going in for pancakes its fine but each time I go, my food is just bad.  Went Sunday morning for breakfast with my boyfriend and he ordered french toast.  It was fine, you can't really mess that up.  I ordered an egg scramble that came in a big skillet.  Everything inside was runny, and not because of the eggs.  it had no flavor so I needed to drown it in ketchup.  Had to flag down my waiter to get a coffee refill and then overheard two other employees getting into it.

There are much better diners to visit than here, so I'll be heading elsewhere.
