Hugely improved decor from very outdated coffee shop to a more sleek look. Good beef gyros. Chicken gyro awful. Convenient to the movie theater for pre/post show treat. Cheesecake from prior visit wasn't good. Owner seems like a very sweet guy while the waitress service is pretty decent. Overall, I'm a fan and prefer the small size of it to the huge mega diners down the road. My local fave is STILL Oakland diner, though.
We stopped here on a Saturday evening, for some supper. The decor is pleasant and upbeat and unlike the usual, spindled Americana so common in NJ diners and local restaurants. The ambiance was pleasant, with only very soft background music, and none of the noticeable clatter of plates arriving at tables or being cleared from them, despite the significant number of patrons here. The list of specials was varied but not overwhelming. I'm uncomfortable at restaurants where lists of "specials" is so extensive, that you KNOW none of the items is special. The menu was also varied, and from that, we chose the shrimp salad wrap, the chicken salad wrap, and a stack of pumpkin pancakes.
Shrimp salad is a "test food" for us. If a place can made good shrimp salad, it's a good sign. This place nailed it. The salad was light and smooth, but NOT overdressed. Ditto for the chicken salad. My personal choice was to opt for a salad ($1.95), instead of fries. I was expecting a couple of leaves of lettuce, with some tomato passed over them but got a generous, Greek-style salad, including Kalamata olives and a sprinkle of feta. My daughter's pumpkin pancakes appeared light and flavorful, and smelled delicious.
The wait staff and manager were pleasant and attentive, but not intrusive (a mark of good service). Looking around, I noticed that the other patrons seemed to be very much enjoying their meals and the restaurant.
Note: I LOVE lamb, and the Preakness Diner offered a lamb shank, on their list of specials. So you can bet that next time we go, I'll order it!
The sign says restaurant but this is really very much a diner nothing wrong with that. It is convenent f you are shopping at Preakness. If you are driving past, I would go to the Wayne Diner instead.
Service is good, prices are OK, I was not impressed with their cheesesteak sandwich which was dripping water from the recently frozen steak. My friend had a burger whch was fine.
