  1. I obviously hadn't read reviews before eating here, but then again at the airport you are a bit of a captive audience, especially when you don't have a lot of time to eat breakfast before your flight takes off.

I was here at about 6 am for a 7:18 flight.

    A few notes:

    1) the place was not that busy but I had to wait to be seated
    2) No omelets on the menu – what kind of diner is this?
    3) "Skinny Breakfast" features cottage chease but they were out of cottage cheese. They told me and since I still wanted a lighter option I took it, but the subtitute of 3 mealy out of season tomato slices was pretty lame.
    4) I got out in  time for my plane (because I requested the check as soon as my food arrived) but overall service was slow.
    5) I asked for an english muffin with butter on the side but yet my muffins arrived with huge globs of melted butter on them so I sent them back and had to wait quite a bit to get the replacements (server actually forgot and saw my messy buttery ones that I rejected that he hadn't removed and then rememberd he needed to bring them).

On the plus side coffee is hot (though not particularly tasty) & OJ while pricey is generous and served in a tall parfait glass so sort of quaint and charming for an old time diner feel.

Overall though given the nice associations I have with the name "Ruby" (one of my mom's best friends names), I was pretty disappointed by this experience.  If I was starving and no other options to eat prior to my flight I might go back, but given any other option I probably wouldn't bother.

  2. I always need a burger when I return from Europe through Newark. There are several choices here if you have time.

My experience is this is my third choice if you forget all the fast food places. Burger is just so so. The other choices have a wider selection too if your traveling partner isn't set on a burger.

    No beer or wine here.

Service is pretty fast, but that's a low bar in any airport place.

  3. Worst place I've ever eaten in. Without question! I usually check places I'm going to eat in on the internet, but the connection at the airport was horrible and I lost my patience trying to refresh pages. We blindly decided on Ruby's Diner, because we like "typical american diner" decor and the place seemed homey.

The service was bad. We couldn't find a clean table for four people so we were waiting for them to take the dirty dishes. They completely ignored us for 10 minutes. If we weren't so tired we would have moved elsewhere. They also kept talking loudly the whole time we were there.

The menu is simple and the prices aren't bad for an airport. However, the food is simply disgusting. I ordered standard breakfast set and I've hardly eaten any of it. The sausages looked particularly fatty and disgusting and were gleaming. And they were kind of furry (I really don't know how to explain it other than that :D).The scrambled eggs were tasteless and the bread was stale. I don't even have words to describe how disgusting the breakfast potatoes were. You can see for yourself on the photo. When we were leaving we noticed the kitchen and how those potatoes were prepared and we cried a little bit.

    Please don't do it!

  4. Dont do this to your self. I know it seems like a diner would be awesome. NO!!! It is not. You are not this hungry.

The food is not good and the service is bad

  5. Whoever called this place airport bottom feeding spoke truth.

I've been a bit under the weather these past few days so when I found myself stuck at Gate 101 for a four hour wait I decided to try to eat at the closest restaurant. Which was Ruby's. Mistake #1.

I figured a turkey burger would be easy on the tummy, plus iced tea which I can always take. Mistake #2.

The tea was the color of slightly dirty water. Oh yummy. Basically it was tasteless. I wasn't offered a refill. Which may have been a good thing.

The turkey burger was also tasteless, with a texture that bespoke (a) the freezer and (b) bread crumbs.  The tomato and onion slices were generous – to give them credit. The slightly stale bun was whole wheat.

It came with fries ("no, we can't hold them, sorry") which my husband would have characterized as "fresh last week." They were also cold when they arrived.

The decor – diner red and white – is fun.  The staff was attentive. But at $19 for burger,  fries, and tea, it was definitely overpriced.

So now, back at Gate 101, I regret lost opportunities as I wait.

    MORAL: CHECK YELP FIRST, ALWAYS!

  6. Slow, mediocre over priced airport food. Milk shakes were not good, almost weird tasting. We had a chicken caesar salad & some jalapano cheese sticks. The cheese sticks were blah but the salad was tasty. Wouldn't stop here again if I came back to this airport.

  7. New management New name same diner feel.  But service is on the poor side, not reminiscent of the funny poor at Mel's either.

The food is average to below average in quality and preparation.  The staff seem to have a careless attitude perhaps thinking transient customers are not important to their reputation; certainly not true of Yelp users.
