South Indian cuisine (i.e. dosa) is one of my favorites, and I was excited to discover a place to satisfy my occasional craving for dosa in a neighborhood outside of Curry Hill. Hampton Chutney in SoHo serves quick, delicious South Indian favorites like dosa, uttapams, and thali, as well as homemade soups, beverages (chai, cardamom coffee, lassi, etc.), and freshly baked desserts.
I came to Hampton Chutney for a quick bite to eat on a Sunday afternoon. "Doing brunch" in this neighborhood on the weekends is super stressful because there is usually a huge crowd and the wait can be quite long. Hampton Chutney is more like a food court, self-serve system where you order at the counter, find a seat, and wait for your name to be called to pick up the food.
I got the #12 dosa, which is thin, light, and crispy crepe filled with grilled chicken, goat cheese, spinach, and roasted tomatoes. The portions are huge and you will be pretty full after eating the whole thing. I liked that the crepe had slightly sour flavor (like sour dough), and it was crispy. The fillings were a bit bland though… the chicken especially lacked flavor. I also didn't like how the spinach was chopped into smaller pieces.
You get a choice of chutneys – I had the mango, but it didn't quite pair well with my dosa. Next time I will either get tomato or cilantro.
Hampton Chutney Co is a South Indian casual restaurant with a modern twist. It's good for a quick lunch.
They have traditional Indian flavors like masala and curry chutney chicken, and also options like grilled portobello mushrooms with spinach and balsamic roasted onsions. You have two options for bread — dosas and uttapams (pizza-style). I ordered the seasonal dosa with roasted butternut squash. It was pretty good but the dosa itself was very heavy on the salt. I also ordered their chai and it was very tasty and reminded me of my trip to India.
I like Hampton Chutney Co, but their flavors are more modern than traditional Indian. It would be nice to see more Indian flavors on the menu.
I lived in India and these dosas are yummy. The restaurant is involved with Siddha Yoga which has the current guru Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. The food is simple and local. The Chai is fantastic. They always play music of Gurumayi chanting and it's very relaxing.
I recommend the traditional dosa, the breakfast dosa or the seasonal.
The cilantro chutney is the best.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. The Soho location is home to one of their three locations (one on the UWS, as well as the Hamptons). My go-to order is always one of their dosa sandwiches (super long thin flakey/crispy dough), usually with avocado, some sort of cheese, and veggies.
What really puts these sandwiches over the top are the amazing assortment of chutneys you can pick from to add on to the side.
Really good drinks and desserts as well.
Had a serious dosa craving yesterday so my 10-year-old and I trekked down to Hampton Chutney for lunch. Here are my thoughts:
Ambiance: This is a very clean, casual restaurant. I appreciated the newness of the space.
Service: The cashier wasn't super helpful with our menu questions, nor was she friendly.
Food:
— Breakfast dosa was enormous and the dosa itself was cooked well, but the eggs just didn't taste very fresh. Accompany spinach, tomatoes, and avocado were good but the dosa as a whole didn't come together.
— Daughter had the turkey/brie sandwich, which she really liked and finished. (I have issues with her ordering a sandwich at a dosa place but that's another story.)
— Chutneys were quite bland and weren't memorable (mango and tomato).
Overall: While quantities were large I think prices are too high for this casual restaurant, especially as the dosa was just okay for me. Not sure I'll return but if I do I'll go the traditional route and try the potato dosa instead.
Popped my dosa cherry! Tried the #10 – Potato Masala with Grilled Chicken & Spinach with the curry chutney. The menu board mentioned spicy but it wasn't. The curry chutney gives a tiny tiny bit of a kick but the flavor is still great. I think the spiciest chutney is the tomato but it wasn't that spicy. Must come back and try more!
Great prices and good hearty food close by heart of Soho. My yoga studio is only a block away and I wish I knew about this place earlier instead of eating at the halal carts!
Ive had a few of their dosas and also their rice dishes. Nice flavors. Large portions here! If I'm in the area and want a bite to eat I would come here.
What can I say? I gotta thing for South India…wink wink.
And what you say has me all hot and bothered by South India? Well, the dosas of course…
Hampton Chutney recently moved closer to Chinatown, so it makes it a lot easier for me to get to this location now. Not that the old establishment was far, but coming a bit further South on the island helps me a lot.
I came here on a weeknight around 8pm and the place was filled with people. You could see dosas on every table.
I ordered the classic dosa (stuffed with potatoes) and it comes with a choice of chutney. I went for the mango chutney. I also was very thirsty, so the iced chai (not too sweet) hit the spot.
I made the mistake of ordering dosa to-go (really laughable), and had to carry it in my backpack home. Kind of funny to see a long package hanging out of my backpack with a trailing aroma of Indian spices…I guess I fit into NYC just fine.
Prices are a bit higher than what you would expect if you went to Curry Hill, but I can hang with that for the convenience and for a well made dosa. I'll be back when I have a hankering for desi…
