I had a great dinner here about 2 years ago. But last night's visit was disappointing. I suggest going here with a minimum of 3 people and ordering at last 4 dishes – to spread the risk of an uninspired dish. Items indicated as spicy were not spicy. A bowl of meat curry (I had a lamb Madrasi) cost $17 which is on the steep side. No salads or small veggie dishes available. Indian tea comes in a frugal tiny glass. Not good value!
Service was good/ok.
This review took me a long time to write, mostly because there was nothing particularly memorable about the experience. The food was good, and the ambiance was dark, but okay. Honestly, the thing that stood out to me the most was how pricey our meal ended up being.
Their menu is extensive, and ranges from the most typical Indian dishes to a few more unique ones.
My go-to Indian dish, if there are non-vegetarian options, is the Chicken Tikka Masala, but there were a couple of other interesting chicken options on the menu so I asked the server to offer a suggestion. I ended up going with the Murgh Butter Masala – which, according to the server, is composed of the exact same spices as the tikka masala but cooked with dark meat instead of all white meat. I appreciated that our server was able to differentiate the different spices in many of the dishes that we asked about.
We ordered a serving of naan (cut into 4 pieces which was each about 3 inches across), which I didn't think was enough for the two of us. I'd definitely suggest getting at least one side, either rice or naan, per person.
The bill came out to be $19/person, and I didn't even feel particularly full. I had leftovers, but it was just a lot of sauce, and I didn't see the point of spending another $4-5 on naan.
I'm not sure if this would be my restaurant of choice if I'm back in the area, but if I do come back, I'm definitely bringing an Indian friend who can tell me what to order!
Food was superb. Ordered the tandoori chicken, garlic naan, and malai kofta with basmati rice. These dishes together were a perfect combination, and it came to about $40 total – not terrible for 2 people. I wish there was slightly more food as we devoured all of it with barely any leftovers. The ambiance was nice enough, good music, and prompt service.
I only have one complaint from my meal here, and I'd love to get some answers from the management – do you guys have a plate shortage or something? The waiters were on our table like hawks, continually asking us whether we were finished our meals so they could take our plates. Several times they removed our plates before we were finished and we had to ask to have it back. Once we finished our tandoori chicken and were picking at the grilled onions left on the dish, the waiter literally just dolloped the onions onto our plates so he could take the dish away. It was very odd and I've never had this experience at a restaurant before…it made the meal feel very rushed and that we couldn't enjoy our meal properly.
Nonetheless the food was delicious and I'm sure I'll be back. Hopefully they'll have replenished their supply of dishes by then.
Went here with some friends who recommended it as their favorite Indian spot in the greater Curry Hill area. I was a bit skeptical as I've had a lot of medicore food here, but was pleased.
The Tandoori Broccoli was really good. The garlic sauce they put on it was flavorful and just really pleasing. After that, we got a few dishes to share. The fish curry was probably the best of them. I hadn't had Malai Kofta in forever, and it was solid as well. The Shrimp Curry was maybe a little under-flavored, but decent.
In retrospect, I wish I'd have ordered a dish that has their "spicy" notation, just to see what they're playing with. But the food is good. Sauces complex, though pretty heavy. I'd come back.
This is my updated review. A few of my previous experiences was very messed up. I heard from the management after I posted my review and I decided to go back. We visited with a friend. We ordered chicken kobabs, chicken tikka masala and malai kofta. Good food. We had a hearty meal. This place has made some serious changes. I would ask for less oily food when I order though. Ambience is good and staff courteous. Overall- one of my go-to places for non vegetarian indian food in NYC.
Solid food, good service, but small interior. I really enjoyed the food here though. Fresh take on Indian cuisine, I liked the design, decor, and lighting of the restaurant, very sleek and high-end look.
Usually, I really like Indian restaurants. The atmosphere is typically classy, they have a ton of options for every diet, and the waiters are really friendly. Of course, this is given that the food is great and the place is clean (also known as extremely normal, if now low, standards for restaurants in New York City). Unfortunately, these givens were not met.
Walking in, I really felt that this was a classy establishment- beautiful chairs, that dimly lit feel, and a very well-stocked bar. And then I saw it. Lipstick on my cup. I don't wear lipstick, seeing the dried, bright red mark after drinking my water (remember, reasonable expectations of cleanliness), I was seriously taken aback.
Then, we waited for our food to come. Which kind of took a really long time, even though we came in at 5:30pm, when there were very few people there. I had the vegan potato and cauliflower dish which did not come with rice, so we had garlic naan and an order of basmati rice. These things were very delicious and I really wish I could have them again but I never really plan on coming back here. Anyway, my friend had a really awesome (or what looked awesome) sizzling chicken with grilled veggies. It came in like a sizzling hot plate. But it wasn't really awesome because there were small bones lodged into the chicken that she nearly swallowed. Maybe not the fault of the restaurant but typically, I think people expect a boneless chicken. But that's not all of it- the chicken was raw! It was bright pink and was a perfect site for food borne illness, which many of us have had and know it is not a good experience. That made no sense to me because they spent so much time making us wait for our food. We told the waitress all of this, who was thankfully apologetic, and sent the meal back to the kitchen and offered to give us anything after our meal on the house. I think by then we were already pretty disgusted by the lack of cleanliness and lack of precaution taken to prevent stomach flu that we were not interested.
I had seriously reasonable expectations, that were not met by any means other than friendly staff, nice atmosphere, etc. which I honestly would trade for cleanliness and quality.
I'm all about (Indian) buffets. But we came to Chote for dinner thanks to work!
The 8 of us went a little overboard with the ordering – how could we pick when there were so many options to choose from! Ultimately we ordered wayyyy too many dishes to share (to a point our server came back to our table to warn us – oops).
Lamb biriyani, tandoori salmon, saag paneer, tikka masala, butter chicken, gobi, chicken korma, tandoori chicken, sweet naan, and keema naan.. just to name a few.
Every dishes was beyond delicious. My personal fav was the tandoori salmon – moist, flakey, and flavorful. My heart skipped a beat when I heard the salmon sizzling its way to my table. Keema naan (lamb filled) was nothing I've had before! Perfectly warm, chewy, and stuffed – I must had devoured the whole basket myself (before anyone else could get to it)! Plain naan – sorry, our relationship just isn't the same anymore.
Yes the place is pricy! All the dishes do not come with naan or rice. But the quality and taste are well worth it! Definitely check it out if you are in the area!
