I was visiting my family a few months ago and my cousin suggested that we try Brick Lane Curry House for dinner. She works nearby and has eaten here for lunch. We arrived right as they were opening for dinner. So, I should mention that their health inspection grading was still pending–but we decided to take a walk on the wild side and eat there. We just had water to drink and my cousin had the naan bread. For the entrees, I had the peeli daal and my cousin had the tikka masala with lamb. I usually get the chana masala whenever I go to Indian restaurants, but I also love lentils. I enjoyed my dish, the spices were on point. My cousin enjoyed her meal as well and she had enough to take leftovers. I didn't have leftovers but then again I don't really like taking leftovers. It was a tad bit pricey in my opinion but the food and service were good. We went on a Friday night and it was empty but filled up. We paid the bill around 8 p.m. but we ended up chatting until 10:30 p.m.–the staff just let us talk, they didn't bother us or hover around us or anything like that. I appreciate that. I probably would go again but maybe try their lunch special.
This place is around the corner from my office on 53rd and a friend recommended it. I am glad she did because the food was delicious. I took the food to go but next time I definitely want to dine in. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala Curry Lunch Box lunch special and it came to $13. It was well worth the $13 the serving was huge. I could have definitely ate half and saved the rest for another meal but it was so good I couldn't stop.
The lunch special comes with rice, naan & a dessert. I got Chicken Tikka Masala and garlic naan both were out of this world. I will definitely be going back!
Wow. I've wanted to go here for quite some time and I wasn't disappointed. Great service and ambiance. I had the keema samosas for an appetizer. Chicken vindaloo for an entree, garlic naan as a side and a large kingfisher to wash everything down. All were fantastic!!!
One day I was going to get my usual Kati Roll next door, but felt compelled to give Brick Lane a try. I walked in to order the lunch special, and it was just okay.
It comes with an appetizer, rice, your choice of protein, your choice of preparation style/curry, and a dessert. My appetizer was missing. Lots of rice. Curry was very oily. Only four small pieces of chicken found among all the onion. Dessert was a not-so-delicious rice pudding. Oh! And it was supposed to come with naan that I didn't get either.
I probably wouldn't have minded all of the above because I did get a lot of rice and sauce… but the lunch special is $12 or $13. In midtown east that's standard, but I expect a little more. I do agree that assuming you get all your meal components, it's enough food for two meals. But next time I'll just stick with my kati roll.
The restaurant itself is snug and casual, and the tables are spaced enough that you won't feel crowded if it's full.
3.5 stars
Brick Lane Curry House is an Indian restaurant in Midtown East.
I came here on a whim with coworkers on a weeknight at around 8pm. There were only a few diners when we came, so it was quiet compared to most NYC restaurants. I ordered the mattar paneer and it was delicious as always. It's my favorite Indian dish! The garlic naan was more chewy than normal… but I liked it. My coworkers got a spicy dish and said it was very very spicy. Beware! Make sure you tell them your threshold for spicy food. I had a good meal, but nothing too memorable. Come here if you're short on time and don't want to wait for a table.
Made a reservation here specifically to try the Phaal. We arrived and they "ran out", which I found odd since it's made to order. They referred us to their other location on the upper east side so we headed up there. Was a little upset that they seemed to botch our reservation.
I ate at this location when I was visiting my New York Office. I remember seeing this place on Man vs food and wanted to try it. I felt the curry was great, and it wasn't too spicy. The place was nice and a short walk from Lexington. I would highly recommend to try it.
This is the 2nd time I have been to BRick Lane. The first time was in their original East Village location and I tried their super spicy vindau lamb dish and man it was on fire! Here I am again, with a group of friends and a baby so I cannot indulge myself in the deadly heat anymore. Fortunately, they serve mild curry too that isn't spicy at all.
We ordered their garlic nann and samosa to begin. They are both really good. For entree, we each ordered a curry dish and shared among the table. I got the non-spicy, coconut curry dish with fish and it is very good. There are other spicy curry dishes with goat and unfortunately the names are too hard to remember but I did not have a dish I didn't like.
We ended the dinner feeling super full. I think that is how I am supposed to feel after an Indian meal 😉 Will come back!
