  1. great spot for pre-show/game dinner & drinks! A friend recommend McMahon's for food & drinks before a concert I was attending at the Barclay's center. It's a short, direct walk down 5th Ave which was perfect – easy to find & get to, especially important in chilly months! The place is actually quite large but the set up & seating arrangements could be a bit better. It seemed like there was a lot of open space. Everyone was standing around/near the bar so it would've been nice to have a few more tabletops. We ended up grabbing a table which was simple – altho the place were fairly crowded the servers (and I think possibly the owner/manager) were moving fast to get people in/out and seated. They had a nice beer list with a good amount of options and a simple "event" menu which we both liked. A few solid options made ordering easy & fast – it's pretty standard bar food tho. We had the burger & mozz sticks, both were delicious & came out pretty fast. FYI, upstairs bar is cash only but downstairs accepts cards.

Also, there were a lot of TVs. I don't live in the area but if I did I'd probably frequent if I needed a place to watch multiple games – although maybe not when there was an event going on at Barclays since I'm sure it would be packed beforehand.

  2. I'm surprised i'm writing a 2 star review for a happy hour bar…

I've been here twice now, the first time was actually decent, but the second time reverses anything good this place had going on.  The first time, met a few friends for a few drinks.  Sat at one of the high tops, had a few drinks, a few shots, and the price was pretty good (buy backs sitting at a table, we're happy with)

The second time, came before a Nets game, during happy hour.  Now, there is a sign outside, telling you what the happy hour deal is for drinks.  So we order a decent beer first round, 4 people, $22.  Then we go, meh, lets just order the happy hour drink, so we do, and for 4 people, it turns out to be more expensive (when it should have been about $10 cheaper.

Most likely won't return, because there wasn't even a willingness to accommodate here.

  3. My friend and I stopped at McMahon's Public House with a few of his buddies, Friday Night after attending the Brooklyn Nets/76'ers game at the Barclay Center. There were people already in this bar watching the game, and the place became more of a party scene once the fans left the Barclay Center.  Even though this place was pretty crowded, our waitress was always at our table right before anyone of us needed another drink. The atmosphere here is pretty chill. Plenty of TV's to watch sports; if the Nets aren't your team. We didn't order any food but everything I saw being placed on the tables next to me looked appetizing. I look forward to writing another review after my future visits.

  4. Please, leave Brooklyn. And I mean that in the meanest way possible.

As you can tell, I'm not fond of McMahon's Public House.

When people complained about all the things the Barclays Center would bring, they never once mentioned this place. Traffic? It's livable. Rent going up in the surrounding area? I'll pay it. An influx of tourism? Hey, we need some cash put into these neighborhoods. This place however, is far worse than anything the Barclays has attracted.

McMahon's Public House is basically here for one purpose. Solely to make profit. Now you might say to yourself, shouldn't a business make money? Of course, but most bars in the area care about their patrons. This place does not.

Why does this place think it can do what it does? Because they think that since they are super close to the Barclays that they can charge whatever they want. They had a business plan. Lets open up a new renovated bar, right near the Barclays to be the place to be before or after a event at the arena. They even state it as one of their specialties on this very yelp page.

"Located a block away from the Barclay Center, we invite you to come down and support Brooklyn with us with pre and post-game/event drink and food specials."

Do you think we're stupid? There are tons of places that are located within two blocks of the Barclays. Because you're one block closer, you get charge insane prices, offer us a worse product, and have terrible customer service?

What does McMahon's do so awful?

    — The prices and happy hour are a joke! $8 for a beer? I thought they said a block away from the Barclays. Not in the Barclays. Get out of here with these prices. Don't worry though, you can always take advantage of the $1 off for happy hour, but what's that? The happy hour ends at 6! SIX O'CLOCK! Not 7, but 6! There are lots of places in Brooklyn that go till 8, but I don't expect them all to do so. I have never been to a bar which ends it's happy hour at 6. Unheard of! When I asked about when happy hour ended, the bartender gave me the nastiest attitude. "It's been over". Some real great "pre and post-game/event drink and food specials" that you stated. Too bad they won't be able to take advantage of them. Average person gets out of work at 5. Game starts around 7:30. Do the math!

    – The selection of beers is awful. They serve large name conglomerate beers on tap. They have Bud and Bud Light. Hey, don't like Bud Light? Don't worry, they have Coors Light. Heineken, Corona, a cider and whatever else non knowledgeable beer drinkers drink. People who actually know beer, DO NOT DRINK THESE BEERS! Large corporations have put millions of dollars into these beers to get people to drink them. However since people have been getting a bit wiser, the sales of most of those beers have gone down. People aren't drinking their father's beers anymore. Now if this was a chain restaurant or a sports bar in Manhattan, like Stout, sure I would get it. You have to give the masses what they want. This is Brooklyn however. We know our beer. We do not like piss. There are several bars around you which have significantly better beer. Guess we'll have to walk an extra block to the Barclays. Oh the humanity. Walk one extra block, or drink better beer that costs less?

    – If you don't enjoy the taste of mass produced beers with poor ingredients, don't worry. They have overflowing taps, filled with foam. Worst of all, you can taste how dirty the taps are. When you have no love for your beers, when you have no love for your customers, you can taste it in the taps. Those beers taste worse than they already do.

    – If you want to save a few bucks and not offer customers paper towel to dry their hands, that's fine. And it's good for the environment. Please make sure you have a proper hand dryer. It would be more effective if I just blew on my hands, than use the weak and cold air producing hand dryer in that bathroom.

    – This place has no personality. None. I don't see any warmth, friendliness or hospitality. The staff here is cold. The place lacks charm. I feel like I'm dying each time I'm here.

    On a positive note,

-The food isn't that bad. It's pretty decent. However, it's just typical pub food. If you wanted to eat before the game, there are lots of better options. You are in center of Brooklyn. Park Slope, Fort Greene, Boreum Hill and Prospect Heights have lots of better places for food that offer a more unique selection.

I have been forced to come here with co-workers for the past two Fridays for "happy hour". It was torture. When I began my review I was going to give it two stars, which is rare for me. But I ended up giving it one, which is even more rare. I hate this place.

I hate it's business model. I hate what it represents. I hate it may foreshadow what may come to Brooklyn. This is not Brooklyn. This place does not support Brooklyn. This place belongs somewhere else. Put it next to MSG, where it belongs.

    AVOID AT ALL COSTS

  5. Just okay!  Great location near Barclays, so we stopped by before a concert.  While the beers were reasonably priced, and the bar food was fine (we had wings and quesadillas), the service was slow, and the waitresses/bar tenders seemed like they were having trouble managing the large crowd.  My favorite part about the location, was the abundance of chairs/tables outside.  Overall, I would go back, but I would hope for quicker turnaround on food/drinks.

  6. If you have a great group of people, it doesn't matter where you are, there is always going to be a good time.  Met up here with some colleagues, we called ahead to reserve a table although they don't really take reservations (score).  Great food (fish and chips, wings) and service.  A friend got the irish breakfast which looked amazing.  We even asked to change a few tv screens to the football games which they obliged.

What I was most impressed about is their beer glasses.  Now, I drink beer often, but mostly at home or at a friend's but enough.  McMahon's was the first time I've seen angry orchard being served in an angry orchard glass!  I was super impressed.  Picture below.

  7. This place is a solid 3 stars. Stopped in for food after having drinks at another neighborhood bar. The space itself is quite large. A nice sized bar area in the front and an equally nice sized dining area in the back. The bar area had quite a few people lingering around enjoying themselves and watching a soccer game at the time. The dining area was practically empty.

We took a seat at one of the high top tables in the bar area. The bartender came from behind the bar and took our orders. She was not the most friendly or pleasant person but she did her job.

I had the buffalo wings which were pretty solid. My friend had chicken fingers in which he enjoyed.

Overall, it's a decent place but nothing distinctly special. I'm sure it gets crowded when there are basketball games or other events going on at the Barclays Center.

  8. I like coming here when it's more low key on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon than when it's packed after an event at Barclays. The food is good for a bar and the bartenders are nice.
