44th St. Curry House is a hidden Indian takeout joint in Midtown East that appears everywhere from Menupages to Seamlessweb and Foursquare, but not Yelp for some reason. Since opening back in August 2010, this spot is known for its biriyanis and lunch platter specials under $10. Lunch specials (including 2 veggie curries, 1 veggie/1 meat, 2 meats) are all served with Basmati Rice and Naan. Thankfully, Kati Rolls are still part of the menu after all this time.
44Curry has similar type offerings compared to its neighborhood competitors like Joy Curry and Tandoori but naan bread is smaller and soggier than necessary. The saag and cabbage taste much more like vegetables compared to Joy and is a lot less filling. I am not sure if that makes it more authentic if less creamy, but it certainly is less coma-inducing.
Best of all, there are absolutely no lines. It might something to do with the tree parked right in front of the sign entrance, but definitely no complaints for tasty, wait-free Indian food!
Last I checked, I'm not Indian so I'm not sure how authentic this stuff is.
The place was dead when I came in there. This didn't seem very promising but I wanted to give the little guy a shot, especially when Chipotle next door always has a line out the door.
I got a kati roll, it was microwaved. This is not the Kati roll company. It's flavorful, but I think they can do better.
The hot food looks alright.
I don't work nearby anymore, so oh well. Maybe next time.
Great place. Such nice staff, great selections, and inexpensive *real* Indian food. Even if I don't get a chance to have lunch there sometimes, I always stop by for their chai. The ONLY place in Midtown to get authentic Indian chai. Rose water and spices….yum!!!
Thank you 44th street curry house and nice staff who don't complain having to boil tea for 10 mins just to get my buck fitty. =)
