I can't believe how cheap this place was. $6.99 for a decent sized bowl of Jajang or Jjamppong Myeon . Only $9.99 for the Tangsuyuk. The rice versions are more expensive but still under $10.
The restaurant looks more like a lunch place, not like the more trendy Korean restaurants. More clean and casual, but the food was satisfying. There were pretty much only Koreans eating here. I wouldn't have known about this place had my Korean friend not told me.
Jajang Myeon – The noodles were so chewy and QQ. My favorite part! There weren't a lot of ingredients in the noodles besides a whole lot of onions, very little pork, some cabbage, and a tiny mound of zucchini. Seriously, way too many onions. Taste-wise though the sauce is the same as any other place, aka delicious. Given how cheap it is, I was still very happy.
Jjamppong Bab – My friend ordered this and it came out as an even larger bowl than the Jajang Myeon. I've only had this over noodles before, but this was even better than the noodles. I love rice soaking in anything soupy or saucy. This was somewhat spicy but not overwhelming. There wasn't that much seafood so I feel like the broth wasn't as strong, but still for the price it's pretty satisfying and very filling.
Tangsuyuk – I've only had this crispy Korean sweet and sour pork dish at Pocha 32 before and the one at Paik's Noodles was way better. The breading was so chewy. Never had a breading like that before. It tasted somewhat like the prawn crackers that come with peking duck. It is a bit on the sweet side. I liked how they mixed in vegetables with the sauce too.
For comparison, we looked at another place down the street that also serves Korean Chinese food. There it was $9 for the Jajang Myeon, $12 for the Jjamppong, and $20 for the Tansuyuk. This place can't be beat for the price to tastiness ratio.
Went back, had the Tong Soo Yook, service was similar. It was mostly batter. Jajjangmyung was similar.
This place dope. This restaurant just opened last week and so there isn't a set menu yet. This might be just because they haven't gotten the menu from the printers yet or they don't know what to set the price for items so they are going through a "soft opening". Either way, as of now the three items on the menu is jajangmyun (6.99), jjamppong(6.99), and tangsuyuk(9.99). The prices as of now are AMAZING. Any korean that has lived in manhattan long enough knows that the best korean-chinese food is at Hyodonggak, and this place competes!! Not only are the prices great, but so is the flavor and portion! The waiter man was really cool and chill and kept refilling our water and asking if everything was ok. You're a cool dude. Since it's a new restaurant its kinda sketch getting up to the second floor, but once you get up there, the AC is nice and cool and the restaurant is clean and new. Def come check this place out, or maybe not, cause I want to keep the prices low hahahaha.
Paik's focuses on doing several things well at an extremely affordable price. They have a small menu, less than 10 items, with jajiangmyun being one of their main specialties. Also super cheap at only $6.99 for a big bowl.
I came with the hubby and splitting the jajiangmyun between two didn't leave us very full but one bowl is also a lot for one so we also ordered the sweet pork. The black bean sauce noodles weren't as flavorful as I've had before but it's the only place I've eaten at in ktown that even offers it so I'll gladly come back again to satisfy my next craving. The sweet pork was okay, like other people have said before there just wasn't enough meat in comparison to the fried stuff around it. There was also a black bean sauce over rice with an omelette on the menu which we'll probably try next time.
We came around 6pm on a Saturday and the place was practically empty except for a handful of customers which we didn't mind because there are always crazy lines in ktown around dinner time. Service is super quick because of the limited items they have on the menu. Our jajiangmyun came out in what felt like 5 minutes.
Paik's Noodle (it says Hong Kong Banjum 0410 in Korean) is a Korean-Chinese chain restaurant. First chain in NY, they have 6 in LA, and several in Korea.
The manager informed me that as of today there are only three (out of 12) dishes available today (Jajangmyeon, Jjampong, and Tangsuyuk), 2 more would be available by next week and everything else should be out by July 1st.
We ordered takeout.
The food is decently cheap (you won't find $7 jajangmyeon anywhere in the city..), but the portion is tiny. Besides the portion, I actually enjoyed the meal! The Jajangmyeon sauce wasn't so overwhelming and salty and the Tangsuyuk wasn't heavily fried and tasted like it was made out of rice cake!!
Must come back to try other items
Watch out K-town, Paik's noodle is shaking things up.
I have to say, our evening started out horrendously – while waiting for our seats, they dropped an entire tray of food on the floor and the spicy soup got all over my boyfriend's shoes.
The manager and multiple staff members came to apologize, and let us know that our meal would be complimentary. The service was pretty slow after that but we were patient since they haven't been open that long.
All this was forgiven when the food came out. The tang soo yook (pork with veggies and sweet sauce) was AMAZING. It had a chewy texture and we loved every bite. The portion was perfect to share for two people.
The jjampong (spicy noodles) and jjajangmyun (black noodle) were both really good. The jjampong was filled with tons of seafood and the jjajangmyun had plenty of meat and veggies in the sauce. I prefer the jjajangmyun because the jjampong was too fishy for me, but the boyfriend loved it.
The best part, though… the prices. Where else in Manhattan can you get good quality noodles for $6.99…. For dinner?! The portions are generous for the price and the quality is on point.
This is our new go-to spot when we're craving Korean/Chinese noodles. Can't wait to be back once they expand their menu!
Paik is changing the Jajangmyun game in NYC! Up til now all the other top joints have charged at least $8.50 or more, but Paik's has come thru clutch at 6.99. This joint is originally from SoCal and they have kept their SoCal prices. The portions are pretty nice and the taste is good enough to warrant a 3.5 for me. They only have three things on their menu: Jajangmyun, jampong, and Korean sweet and sour pork. They don't have actual menus so you just go off of these traditional dishes. Love the simplicity.
Now for the taste. The Jajangmyun was pretty on point in terms of taste. It wasn't the greatest I've had but pretty well done. The jampong was less traditional tasting and more average. Both dishes had really nice noodles that were perfect in consistency. My only disappointment was the pork. There was definitely too much batter compared to meat and the batter was more tempura like which differs from traditional recipes. The sauce was still on point and the portions were big.
Overall service was getting some kinks out and the food was good. They need to have some more servers but other than that it's all Gucci.
I like this restaurant for its simple feel. It's location is kind of hidden away, on the second floor of a building in ktown. Still, it is spacious and clean and quite popular.
We ordered 2 of the 3 items on the menu. Jajangmyun was pretty great. Flavorful and NOT sweet which made me very happy. And only $6.99 for a big bowl!
The pork was tasty as well, though only for the first few bites. I didn't like how much sweet syrup the meat was drenched in. There was also way more fried doughy stuff around the meat than the actual meat itself.
Next time I'll return and get the seafood noodle. I saw a few people around us eating that and it looked so good!
Excellent place for a quick and casual meal. Hurry in while it's still new and prices are low!
