Nothing too spectacular but great for a quick bite. I had a seaweed salad and tuna roll and it was good. It gets crazy in here during lunch but calms down later in the day.
SUPER tiny supermarket that you wouldn't know was there unless you were actively seeking it out. They have rice balls, bento boxes, and other Japanese foods that you can find for pretty decent prices in this area. Their baked goods are mostly from Pan Ya, a Japanese bakery in St. Marks. Though the produce section is limited, they have the basics for any Asian cooking. Their snack aisle is stocked with a variety of interesting and popular finger foods as well.
There's a credit card minimum of $10!
One of my goto places for lunch. Love their selection and the food is pretty good. Really sad they got rid of their rice burgers but their donburis (rice bowls) are always solid. The only thing is that they don't accept credit card if your order is less than $10 which makes life very inconvenient sometimes so I just make sure I have cash when I visit
Hubby was craving for Japanese food without going too far from our hotel and found this awesome place. It is a mini supermarket that serves freshly made, comfy Japanese food. They do have delicious looking pastries displayed too but I didn't have the chance to try it. The menu is displayed above but there are pictures with prices all along the hot line where the cooks are continuously making food in containers for to-go orders or dine-in.
The groceries are located way in the back and the open seating dining area with a few tables are upstairs. I was so excited to just be in there. So the nice girl who helped us took our order then we paid for it with the cashier then waited for our food. We decided to eat there so she gave us a tray. We both had the Katsu-don, I had the Pork and he had Chicken. I almost ordered their Miso Ramen, which looked really good but changed my mind last minute. I hope to come back when I visit NYC again cuz something about it is so comfy, I just loved it there!
Sunrise Mart is a convenient small Japanese grocery store. While it is not as large or as well-stocked as the Sunrise Mart in the East Village, this midtown outpost still has a decent variety of goods. You can find most of your Japanese staples, from frozen goods to candies and snacks to various Japanese soft drinks to various sauces. Their produce section is small and is the weakest section of the store.
The grocery store is usually crowded during lunch time. You can purchase various bento boxes, sushi, ramen, and other Japanese dishes. The food is decent, and the prices are on par for the neighborhood. There is a seating section on the second floor.
If you work in midtown and need to pick up something quick, this is a good place to shop. However, if you want to get more things, their East Village store would be better.
If I could, I would add half a star to my review.
This was really a pleasant discovery since I have been to their east village location a couple of times back in the year and was always wondering why it was not available in the midtown area. Sunrise provides freshly prepared Japanese food, cooked or raw at a bargaining price; and I could always found what I was looking for conveniently, especially beverages and drinks.
There is a 10 dollar minimum on card purchases though, and several cooked dishes could be gone fairly quick.
Cafe Zaiya sits only two doors away.
The reasons that you should check out this Japanese supermarket:
1. Fresh sushi at cheaper prices
2. A great selection of Japanese snacks and Sashimi
3. Sitting area provided upstairs for you to dine in the store
4. Conveniently located in Midtown East
I gave an office buddy a Japanese Raspberry Kit Kat and mention They I get them from Dainobu or H-Mart and she mention she seen the Green Tea version at Sunrise Mart.
Then that same day going home I spot a Sunrise Mart at 41st Street that I must have pass 50 times before and never noticed it. So I went in to check it out,
Now this was around 7:00 PM so I assume that lot of the prepared food is gone by this time. Inside you will find a wide array of Japanese groceries and delicacies. They different types of items like tea, raw seafood and meat, snakes, cakes, etc. They also sell lots of Japanese beauty products such as face creams, face masks, and more, just like Dainobu including some great Japanese snacks and candy..
The credit card minimum is $10. The cashiers and staff are not all Japanese. I highly recommend this place just to try something don't don't find in local grocery!
