Toloache

“I see some other reviews carp about portion size, and I am sensitive to that.”

“Only complaint was the fish tacos were somewhat bland, but would definitely go back for much of the menu and to explore the carne asada, pork and other treats we missed this time.”

“For apps we started off with the quesadilla de tuetano which was a combo of short rib and bone marrow which I really wasn't sure what to expect.”

  1. Ridiculously good food. We had the trio appetizer with all three guacamoles and they were all good. The spicy wasn't that spicy at all more of a smoky chipotle flavor, fruity was interesting, but the traditional mild was my favorite. For lunch I had the brisket taco and avocado fries, both winners. Tacos were moist and bursting with flavor. Rest of our party also had tacos and the bone marrow taco was the other super favorite. Avocado fries were definitely worth getting as well for fans of avocados. Slightly crispy outside with the gooey avocado inside. Drinks were strong so felt like good value for the money. Will be back with friends again for the patio seating!

  2. Unique mexican!! First off the margaritas were great! We had passion fruit. The special appetizer tonight was delectable. Had cheese chives and whit truffle shavings. Also liked the paella quinoa veggie bowl. Was homey and warm, perfect for a cold evening. Also felt somewhat guilt free. The corn was good but salad and avocado fries not my fav. Service was a 10! I also appreciated that although we arrived early for our reservation they accommodated us and sat us early.

  3. I went with a large group for my friend's 30th birthday. Despite the fact that some members of our party were 40 minutes late, the manager still sat us and gave us no attitude. We were so appreciative.

Frutas guacamole – I loved that this had pomegranate seeds. I really enjoyed it.

Suadero tacos – the waiter recommended these and they were delicious. The brisket was perfectly cooked and I loved the flavor profile.

Rice and beans side – skip it, nothing amazing.

Churros – delicious and we loved combining the chocolate and caramel sauces.

Mezcalita – these were amazing, and I loved that there were a lot of options for mezcal cocktails.

The restaurant is a bit expensive, but the food and drinks are great. I would definitely return.

  4. This place is waayyyyyy too overpriced for mediocre mexican food. All of our dishes were forgettable but the price was definitely unforgettable. But if that's what you're looking for…

  5. Toloache has been on my list of places to go for some time now and a few weeks ago, we found a reason to go to "expensive Mexican". I say that because I know some of the best Mexican food can be the most affordable food for such fantastic quality.

But, I LOVE Mexican, so I have wanted to come here since I've lived on the Upper East Side. The space is pretty big, but it's an odd layout of different rooms, which makes it feel more intimate which is nice.

I started myself off with a pomegranate margarita which was so awesome, I had 2!
For apps we started off with the quesadilla de tuetano which was a combo of short rib and bone marrow which I really wasn't sure what to expect. Aside from the fact that it was more like an open faced flatbread, it was flavorful and moist (in a good way!).

For my entrée I had the JM selected Pollo Toloache, which was so big I barely ate half. I commented on how thick the chicken breast was and how perfectly it was cooked through, and questioned on how they do it?! It truly was cooked to perfection. Tough order choice for me since I typically go for the enchiladas or tacos (my fav!) I branched out considering we weren't at a typical Mexican place.

My boyfriend went for the Tumbada which essentially was a paella with all of your dreams come true in it. A little bit of legitimately everything. He definitely enjoyed it since he pretty much licked the plate.

Though I really did enjoy the meal, I love my classic Mexican, at a less expensive and authentic joint. I wouldn't turn you down, if you asked me to go back though!

  6. The black cod is a must with their fruit guacamole. The salsa it comes with his house made and so fresh. Everything on the menu looked great. The jalapeño margarita cocktail is sooo good !

  7. I seriously enjoyed my meal. Plus, we were late for our already late night rezzies and they were still able to happily cater to us. Mojitos  were great and they're willing to customize any drink on the menu to suit your taste.

Started with traditional chips&guac, hamachi ceviche as an appetizer, langosta (lobster) tacos, bacaleo trufado (cod entree) and ended the night with churros – all to share. We cleaned our plates!! Everything was deliciously spot on!

Tip: backyard terrace seating usually closes earlier, recommended noting seating preference while making reservations 🙂

  8. My BFF and I opted to sit outside before it got super chilly like it is now and it was great! This place is much bigger inside than it looks on the outside and is really nicely decorated. We split two tacos and the short rib platter, which was ok only but the tacos were both delicious! We got the shrimp and one of the meats – I can't remember now but I would definitely go back if I were in the area to try more tacos. 🙂
