  1. Oh Momoya.

The first time I tried Momoya was about three years ago. I went to the other location and LOVED it, but hadn't gone back since.  On a Friday night, I decided to cancel my plans in favor of sitting in my bed and eating sushi (yes, I'm old).  While I normally don't go crazy with delivery sushi, I had a Seamless coupon, so I decided to order from Momoya.

My order arrived promptly, which was great.  I got the Sushi Entree which was $24 pre-tax.  It was 8 pieces of sushi and one tuna roll.

The tuna roll was OK.  It wasn't wrapped very tightly- it was 6 fairly loose pieces.  Standard.

The sushi though. Alright- the fish itself was hit or miss.  Some of the pieces I got were excellent and others were not so hot.  But what really irritated me was HOW MUCH WASABI they put between each piece of fish and the bed of rice!  I know that sometimes a coating of wasabi is put there, and that's fine, but this was legitimately globs of it.  I'm not a big wasabi person and this really ruined it for me.  For the price you're paying at Momoya, you don't want to wish that you ordered from your local $8 minimum place instead.  Plus, wasabi permeates the food around it- you can't just scrape it off and expect everything to go back to normal.

The food itself?  Probably 3 stars.  But when you order delivery for over $30 and you aren't happy with your order, that's an issue.  Disappointed.

  2. Came here on a Saturday night and had a great experience, fresh fish and delicious sake.  They don't take reservations but by arriving around 7pm we were able to get one of the last open tables without having to wait.

Our server was friendly and helped us pick out a small carafe of sake.  Note – the small cafe has a LOT of sake for 2 people so we were really happy that she recommended that size to us instead of the large.  We each easily had 2.5 glasses which was more than enough for our meal.  We went with the wakatake onikoroshi which was fruity, not too sweet and had minimal burn.

We both went with the chef's sushi and sashimi which includes a special roll.  The amount of food you're given is significant, in my opinion, much more than other sushi spots in the neighborhood and definitely for a very fair price.  The sashimi alone was 4 pieces of 3 different types of fish, for a total of 12 generous sized slices, and then there were 6 pieces of nigiri, a quarter of a cucumber hallowed out and filled with uni and salmon role and an 8 piece special maki roll!  If you are hungry, definitely get this or get one and a couple rolls and share with a friend.

The fish was pretty fresh, though a bit uneven as others described.  Some pieces of sashimi and nigiri were really amazing and some were ok. Agreed with others that there is a generous amount of wasabi on the nigiri which I like but would imagine might be a bit much for some.  I got the black cod special roll was extremely delicious, savory, with the cooked cod on top that basically melted in my mouth.  T got the Momoya roll, which is a spicy tuna roll with raspberry and almond which sounded a bit weird but was also really good.

I'd definitely recommend this place if you're into interesting sushi, enjoy sashimi and are dining in.  The service was great and the portion was very generous and the fish was fresh.

  3. Yum sushi place! I thought this place had a variety of selections and a few different options from other sushi places. I got the appetizer that was avocado with lobster on top and that was delicious! Thanks for the creativity. The rolls were good too, but not amazing. My family also got the rib eye and the salmon, both cooked well but would recommend sticking with the sushi here.

In terms of parking, there was free parking on the opposite side of the street from the restaurant but not on the same side (after 7 PM)… which was weird. So be careful when you are parking around here!

  4. Momoya is MomoYUM! I had the sashimi deluxe (15 pieces with over-the-top presentation, presented on ICE) plus a crunchy salmon roll. Also had a PARADE of appetizers, including a hamachi yellowtail, pork gyoza, and some other thing I can't remember off the top of my head. My dining partner and I concurred that the entrees were sublime, but we found the appetizers a mixed bag. Yellowtail was incredible, but the rest of the stuff was rather bland. What's that mean? S2S (Stick 2 Sushi/Sashimi). #S2S

Half star off for the appetizer inconsistency and the internal decor, which has a 1950s art deco look. Sorry, but in any AZN restaurant, especially Japanese, I wanna be reminded of a scene from Kill Bill (dark mood lighting, mystery, etc.)

  5. I wasn't sure which Momoya to review as I've been to both and I'm equally obsessed. If I had to choose which one to go to on an average night, I would pick the upper west side location because it's less of a scene, and therefore less of a wait. Everything here is amazing, and the prices aren't nuts. Obviously get the crispy rice with spicy tuna, the big eye tuna tart is my favorite thing in the world so light and fresh with that truffle oil on top UMPH. My only gripe with Momoya is that they don't take reservations because it gives me anxiety going into the unknown every time, but hey, they're so loved they know they can get away with it.

  6. I haven't frequented UWS sushi places in recent years primarily since I'm too lazy to look.  We came here for dinner with the family based on my sister's recommendation and we were pretty happy.

The apps were standard fare but the best bites were the hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) and tako su (octopus).  The wife and I had the sushi tasting which was pretty good as all the fish was fresh and the rolls good.  The winner though was my mom who got the sashimi entree which came with copious amounts of high quality fish for a very reasonable 25 bucks.

Prices are standard for UWS sushi places and service is decent.  A nice choice in a fairly competitive area.

  7. Great experience at Momoya last night.  We started off with two glasses of riesling which was refreshing on a hot summer night.  The restaurant gives a pretty solid pour which is nice.

For dinner we split the crispy rice w spicy salmon, salmon avocado roll and the salmon/mango/avocado specialty roll.  They all were amazing!  The crispy rice dish was definitely the best! I normally don't like jalepeno but they put a small slice on top which is the perfect compliment to the taste of the crispy rice and salmon.

Only downside was that it was a bit pricey and the staff wasn't very friendly.  That being said, will definitely be back!

  8. Ordered takeaway from here twice in the last three days, that's how good a place this is. I'm not a purist and my favourite kind of sushi is the California maki roll. And Momoya has some of the best I've tasted. The best things on the menu are the spicy tuna & shrimp tempura maki rolls. But the standout item is definitely the crispy rice with eel sauce and tuna: the roll is covered in rice and seared on the flat top just enough to give a bit of a crunch. Topped with a spicy jalapeño, it is just divine.
