Tiella

“For main courses, I had the Pappardelle with Short Rib Ragout, it was fantastic with a light tomato sauce that complimented the rustic rib.”

“Some enjoyable menu items are the truffle pizza that is best served as an appetizer and the grilled calamari, also before the entree`.”

“We also had dessert – skip the lemon surprise in favor of the tiramisu, which was heavenly.”

  1. This place is small and warm with an excellent chef. The bread is great and they use a very good quality olive oil. I have tried all of the vegetarian salads: arugula salad, caprese, tuna tartar over pickled slaw is fresh and delicious. The eggplant parm starter is great I especially love their sauce its perfectly sweet and salty. My fav dish is the home made noodles with truffle, also like spaghetti carbonara without pancetta. The pistachio cake has a great liquor flavor and was great.

  2. What can I say about this place other than the pastas are out of this world!!! The Tagliatelle Ragu was the meatiest, most decadent pasta dish I've had!!! Plus they were also very generous with the Parmigiano reggiano!!

  3. This is a quaint little Italian restaurant off first Avenue near the Queensboro bridge. Walk by too fast and you might miss it! It's cozy and warm and was not too crowded on the Friday night that we came here.
The food here is quite good. I got the spaghetti carbonara which was nicely done and quite different from the standard carbonara you get in a lot of other places. Others in our party got the Garganelli, the Rigatoni and the Orata which were all tasty.
One major complaint I have was with the service though. The restaurant was quite empty and one of our friends was running a bit late, but they refused to serve us before she came. Seriously, we wanted bread or appetizers but they just refused to take our order while we waited hungrily. This is something that they should really work on.
Good food though, would be a good place for a smaller group or a date.

  4. Adorable little romantic place on the UES with really delicious pasta. It's a very small place, but didn't fill up completely on a Friday night. The crowd is a combination of young professionals and families with kids, at least when I was there. Service was excellent. They were very attentive and gave good food suggestions. Pricing is also not bad. I think it should be $$ not $$$ on Yelp.

    1. Bread basket: Complimentary with various kinds. Delicious! The olive oil is a bit bland, and there is no pepper on site initially. Would have been great with a strong olive oil and pepper mix!

    2. Seafood fettuccini special: An assortment of shellfishes and pieces of shrimp, I would say that the pasta itself was good, but the seafood was just OK. The clams and mussels were pretty small, as was the shrimp. Flavor was good.

    3. Prosciutto salad: This is an appetizer. It was pretty standard and nothing special.

    4. Foie Gras, speck, and prosciutto pizza: A personal pizza with foie gras? Yes please. It was simple, but quite decent.

    5. Short rib pappardelle: The short rib was so tender and good, but such a small portion! Two small pieces. Luckily, the pappardelle was amazingly delicious. The sauce was so good, and I ended up dipping the rest of the bread basket in this.

    6. Lamb shank: Comes with green beans. I really loved this dish. Large portioned, fall-off-the-bone tender meat. Very nicely done. I'd recommend this dish with a pasta to complete your experience of this place in terms of main course.

    7. Calamari: Really nice! It's grilled and flavorful. The squid is fresh.

    8. Pistachio cake: One of my favorites. It's lightly flavored and fluffy, with some crunchy items on top. Overall, a very balanced dessert!

    9. Tiramisu: This was really really good. It comes in a small cup, but it's enough because it's pretty sweet. Well done.

    10. Ricotta cheesecake: Although this is among the most popular dishes here, I was not a fan. I felt that the cake was too crumbly and tasted really like ricotta. Reminded me almost of an egg souffle with some savory flavors. However, people at the table loved it, so this is entirely my own opinion!

    11. Lemon dessert: This was also quite good, with a piece of sponge cake at the bottom. It wouldn't be my top choice for dessert, but it breaks up the sweetness with some tanginess!

  5. My boyfriend took me out here for my birthday and it was one of our favorite meals together! We started with the chickpea fritters – great portion and flavors. I got a pasta with shrimp and scallops and he got pasta with mussels. Both were super fresh and the portions were a lot bigger than I was expecting. But the big star of the meal was the pistachio cake….. It is hands down the best cake I have ever had in my life.

Service is fast and friendly, also the bread basket is huge and amazing! Can't wait to be back for another special occasion.

  6. I enjoy this place very much – great pizza, pasta, second courses, deserts, and wine list. Cozy ambiance.

  7. Wow, what a nice little find in a neighborhood I absolutely loathe to visit.

On my way to a recent doctor appointment in the area, I found myself with an hour to kill for lunch. I didn't want to eat a big meal, but I wanted something delicious and healthy. As I walked down First Avenue, I managed to spy a small, narrow cafe called Tiella. I couldn't recall ever seeing this place in previous trips up this way. And it's so small it's easy to miss if you're just passing by.

I walked in and noticed a couple of tables of yentas, yapping away, and dining on what looked like some pretty amazing pastas and pizzas. Boy, did I want some of that. (The pasta and pizza, that is. Not the yentas.)

Alas, I was trying to eat healthy going into Thanksgiving so I ordered the Cavolo kale salad. Kale turns out to be one of the most nutritious things you can put in your body, and in recent years, restaurants big and small all seem to be adding kale to their menus. The Cavolo is a simple mix of baby kale with apple, pecorino cheese, and golden raisins, dressed in a honey-mustard dressing. It was delicious. Couple that with a complementary bread basket and a glass of tap water, and with tip, lunch cost me about $15. A great deal, in my opinion.

I'll be back in the area in a couple of weeks and plan to have dinner. If everything tastes as good as it looks, this may very well rise to a 5-star review.

  8. The food and service were very good. The ambiance was nice and quaint. The wine recommendation and price point was fair.

The Stracciatella e tartufo was amazing – really fantastic pizza-like app that's definitely worth sharing. The pappardelle with short rib ragout was good but the sauce was a little bland. The fish in pesto was outstanding. Tiramisu was solid.

Great little gem of a spot.
