“We did the mid-range sushi entrees for about $55 each (you can spend as little as $29 for the basic or more than $100 for omakase).”
“The Gari signature pieces are so interesting and creative – personal favorites are tuna with tofu, red snapper with arugula and pine nuts.”
“It is perfect for a special occasion, a nice date night or if you just in the mood for some great sushi.”

Sushi is perfectly cut and fresh. Waiters were quick even though it was pretty busy. I suggest trying new rolls here because hey have many unique ones worth trying. Ambiance is good for a date night. Service was great we were seated right away without a reservation which was so accommodating.Do not come with kids Enjoy
Gari is always a winner! We headed to the UWS outpost because the one on the UES couldn't seat us until 10 pm. We were not disappointed.
The hubby and I order Gari on a regular basis (the UES branch delivers) so we went for the sushi and sashimi omakase. Below is a sampling of what we had:
Sockeye Tuna with cucumber sauce
Tuna
Sardine
Tuna with Tomatoes
Fluke
Scallop
Shrimp
Fried Oyster
Backed Oyster
Miso Cod
There were a lot of courses that I am missing but it was all delicious. The service was outstanding and the Sake was delicious.
Love Love Love!
Had a fun time with my friend here for dinner! Pricier than sushi places I frequent out in Queens, but I didn't expect otherwise in this particular area. We came for dinner around 6-7, and it wasn't particularly crowded yet. It was a weeknight and maybe people were still stuck in rush hour on the trains. We were able to get a seat right away, by the window, which was nice. It wasn't silent in the restaurant, but quiet enough (with the right amount of background noise chatter) where we could actually talk and hear one another.
Hostess was very pleasant when she welcomed us in!
Great service! Our waiter was equally friendly and attentive, a young guy, cute. Had a good sense of humor when I was joking with my friend. It was nice to see someone have some personality rather than a stoic person.
Sushi rolls were great — not overly rolled with rice, but a good balance. We took our time eating and we never felt rushed.
Great location — Central Park and the museum. When I was walking back to the train station, it was quiet and I didn't feel any tension or stress meandering around here. Might be different during the summer or earlier in the day/weekend.
Alright, I'm a fan. I wish I can tell you what to order but I hardly know myself. I ordered the Omakase and some misc appetizers that I can give you my two cents on. How the Omakase works is that the chef gives you what he wants. A starting price is given but you can keep on going till you are content. As a person who eats too much, this may not be wise. With a party of 3, all who loves sushi/sashimi, ordered about 7 rounds of chef selections. We told the waiter to stop feeding us after. Although apparently, there is such thing as half a round. You get a complimentary shot of sake at the end of your meal. Well deserved. All the selections were different from each other– ranging from flavor, style and fish. I found the fish with the skin slightly disturbing because I didn't like the texture but nothing at fault from the chef. You can tell the waiter what you prefer or don't like.
For appetizers to avoid and to save your stomach room, avoid the mushroom one, short rib, and oysters. The seaweed salad was surprising welcoming. The other appetizers I mentioned are decent but nothing worth your stomach space or memory of the place. By the way, it may get pricey if you order too many rounds…I mean it will.
This is NOT a mid priced sushi place if you order their famed omakase which i loved. The omakase is $113 minimum for about 12 pieces. I enjoyed my omakas but some of tge sauces overwhelm the pristine fresh sushi. Still it was a treat. I wished the sushi chef was a little bit more entertaining and dramatic for the price of my omakase, but the artistic touches, the fresh fish are unmatched. I didn't learn too much about my sushi because my sushi chef could not explain what I was being served (or couldn't). I wished my waitress would have worked in tandem with the chef to describe my sushi in detail (which is what the best high end restaurants do so well) . I would have enjoyed my omakase more and remembered what I enjoyed so much. Be careful however, the omakase is offered 1 at a time after 12 and if you continue to say "yes" the price will go up each time you nod your head for more and your bill may actually read $175 easily. Luckily I read reviews here and knew I wanted 12 pieces and to stop. Be aware. That said, enjoy your omakase experience. Try it.
As much as the BF & I wanted the Omakase, we ordered a la carte at Gari and it was great! We shared an order of hot sake, followed by their iced green tea & iced oolong tea. Their iced green tea has rolled me into an obsessed with matcha powder! After being served hot towels, we shared a few appetizers that were all very good.
Negimaki – My favorite! Scallion rolled with thinly sliced rib eye beef with teriyaki sauce and crushed red pepper
Haru Maki – Delicious deep fried crab and shrimp Japanese spring roll
Kaiso Salad – four kinds of fresh seaweed with homemade onion dressing (not my favorite seaweed salad, but I always need some greens with my meal)
And for the sushi, we started with two pieces of the Fatty Tuna Sushi. I could feel my eyes roll back as the smooth, buttery Fatty Tuna melted away on my tongue. Although very pricey for a piece of Sushi, it was phenomenal and well-worth it! We then shared about four different maki rolls which were all great (my favorite being the fatty tuna with scallion).
And finally, we ended our night with fried green tea ice cream… yammiiiiiiii !
Pricey, but some really excellent dishes.
I stopped with a friend on a Friday evening, and we were able to snag a pair of seats between reservations; it was a bit surprising to me how busy it was as most seats were taken. We split the tuna of gari platter, the sashimi platter, and the beef short ribs. The sashimi platter was a bit meh to me, kind of pricey for the quality/taste of fish, but the other two dishes were very good. The non-spicy tuna sushi in particular was very good, and the beef ribs were very tender and tasty. I'd come back for the special tuna and try some of the other appetizers.
Having just been to Sushi Nakazawa a week before, it's hard to compare any sushi. But Gari is still great, my last visit being about 8 years before. The quality is above par. Their omakase starts at $100 for 12 prices, which actually seems more expensive than Nakazawa. We didn't do the omakase. Instead we had the crab dumplings which were fine but nothing special. The salad and the mushrooms (without butter). The regular sushi plate and the regular chiefs hi we're more than enough for 2. With sake we were about $100 each.
