Fragole Ristorante

“I had the short rib ragu and my date had the black linguini with shrimp – both were amazing!”

“If you prefer a meat sauce-the rigatoni bolognese or parpadelle are a great choice, depending on which pasta shape you prefer.”

“I've probably had all the pasta dishes, and they are all good, but the best one is probably the black linguine.”

  1. Fragole used to be the place to go in the neighborhood that was authentic, just exotic enough, that you took everyone in from out of town to. On a weekend night, we had a visitor in from out of town, and all of the hip new places had hour long waits. So Fragole it was.

I guess there is a reason that they have been overtaken. Three pastas were ordered. One was reviewed as overdone, the one with clams was lacking in clams and swimming in shells and the gnocchi was good, but not prepared as indicated on the board. Also, the bread that used to be a treat was very white and bland now.

This is not to say that all of the food was bad; it was perfectly fine and the prices are not outrageous. But there is a reason that all of the other places had long waits and we got seated here right away.

  2. Fragole Ristorante is an Italian Restaurant located in Carrol Gardens.  I've been to this cozy, warm, and comfortable size restaurant multiple times for some great dinner dishes.  They have a huge wine bar selection and an amazing Italian Menu selection.  I always order the following with my wife when I go:

    – Antipasto Vegetariano For 2 – 4****S
    – Calamari Alla Griglia – 4****S
    – Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina – 4****S
    – Rigatoni Alla Bolognese – 5*****S (Couch Comatose Alert)
    – Branzino – 3***S (Fish is hit or miss)

Always order a bottle of Red Wine to sooth your soul with the amazing food.

    Good Luck My Yelpers!

  3. This place is some kind of fantastic, I have been here about 4 times and this place really is a charmer. The menu changes often, but the food is always great. This place is the quintessential neighborhood restaurant, but I would go out of my way to come back. Prices are very reasonable and the portions are generous, I am a big fan. I first found this place from Zagat, years ago, and it was such an amazing find. I think the pasta dishes are amazing and should not be missed, also pay attention to the specials.

    The food:

Polenta con Funghi e Fontina- Grilled polenta with wild mushrooms and melted Fontina cheese. This is the must starter, it is so creamy and so well flavored. The polenta has really good flavor but a tad too soft for me, I did wish there was some kind of texture but it is such a minor flaw. The mushrooms and the cream sauce are just damn near perfect. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

Homemade Beet Gnocchi with bacon, shrimp, spinach and cream sauce. I really enjoyed the flavor of Gnocchi, it was so light and pillowy with the shrimp and bacon adding a really nice hearty flavor. As much as I enjoyed this dish, it did come off a tad salty. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

Insalata Rustica- Roasted red and yellow peppers, fresh mozzarella, marinated artichokes and greens with a balsamic vinaigrette. I don't normally get wowed by a salad but this salad wowed me. The roasted veg was excellent, the mozzarella was perfectly creamy and the artichokes had a ton of flavor will the balsamic vinaigrette tying everything together nicely. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

Risotto with Sundried Tomatoes, Asparagus, Baby Scallops and Grilled Kale Pesto. I thought the Risotto was just OK, it was nice and creamy but not as flavorful as I was expecting. The dish tasted very safe, the scallop didn't pack a lot of flavor and I didn't really care for the sundried tomatoes. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

Lasagna Classica- Homemade Lasagna. The lasagna was nice and homey but seemed very ho hum, it didn't really stand out. It was kinda too simple for me. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

  4. Fragole has been on my places to try list for a little while and we finaly gave it a try. I'm glad we did! Wife and i walked in late on a Saturday night. There were only a few tables taken so we had our choice of where to sit. Its a cozy little casual restaurant with candle lit tables, nothing fancy. We ordered the veg antipasti to start and it was delicious. My wife had the salad next and it was very good. I ordered the papperdelle with short rib ragu and i loved it. It is a very nice size portion. Wife had the steak and it was pretty good nothing great. I had the chicken Milanese and enjoyed it. If you are wondering it was too much food and i took most of my chicken and some of my wife's food home also. Watermelon sorbet to finish off the meal was excellent. The service was casual and friendly. One thing i loved was all the food was served piping hot. I am definitely looking forward to going back.

  5. Fragole is warm and inviting and full of love, and I am grateful to it for existing. Every time I come here, the food is on point, the service is excellent, and the atmosphere is joyful. Located in the perfect spot in Brooklyn Heights to catch all of the people who have strayed far enough from Cobble Hill not to want to walk back and all of the neighborhood folks looking for a hearty Italian meal, Fragole is honestly one of Brooklyn's little gems.

Every time I've come here, I've tried something different, but you can literally never go wrong with the pappardelle with ragu carne. It is some of the best pappardelle I've ever had. The appetizers are also on point (because they use basically the same bread from their bruschetta as their pre-meal bread, it's lit – the bread is chewy without being sticky, and yet slightly hard but not to the point where you might chip a tooth biting into it). The wine selection is plentiful and they have some awesome desserts (I love when Italian places serve tiramisu).

The service is also consistently good – they're pretty fast, and the staff is attentive. The space is huge and dimly lit, so perfect for that ~romantic~ date you had in mind for your anniversary. Come here and love Fragole as much as I do.

  6. So glad that we finally visited Fragole! While the restaurant isn't huge, the atmosphere is welcoming and warm.  Very friendly and knowledgable staff, ready to offer suggestions and recommendations. Absolutely loved the wine selection – enjoying a glass of Pino Nere and a cold, refreshing glass of Sauvignon. My favorite was the Insalata Di Barbabietola – loved, loved the creamy goat cheese and the hazelnut vinaigrette.  Our main dishes were quite delicious as well – Linguine Nere, Risotto, and the Pappardelle.  Can't wait to return and have a taste of more deliciousness offered by this restaurant.

  7. Such a long wait it was hard to enjoy the food.

Because we were seated almost immediately I thought this would be a restaurant focused on satisfying their patrons: not the case.

Timeline: it took ten minutes for us to get waters to our table and another five until our server came around with bread and to take our orders. We had more than enough time to decide so we settled on the beet and arugula salad, swiss chard, short rib ragu pappardelle, and shrimp black linguine. Now the waiting…

Our salad came out after about ten minutes and we instantly regretted it. The menu said it came with grilled beets, but they very clearly came right from a can and were cold. It was the most basic salad; I could definitely whip up something faster and better-tasting in my own kitchen. The only redeeming fact about it was the goat cheese, which was so tasty.

The Swiss chard was equally disappointing. It was basically an over-sautéed soggy vegetable with garlic and barely seasoned at all. If I wasn't so hungry, I wouldn't have eaten it, but given how long we had to wait for it, there was no sign that our pasta was going to take any shorter amount of time.

Almost 20 minutes after serving the swiss chard, a busser came to us and said the kitchen was busy and they're cooking our food. Well, I sure hope they're cooking our food! Finally, after waiting more than 40 minutes, our pasta arrived!

The pasta itself was definitely fresh and the texture was honestly really nice. I thoroughly enjoyed biting those noodles. Unfortunately my sauce was not as amazing. They weren't lying when they said spicy. It literally had no flavor except "spicy." It was clearly a tomato-based sauce but I could barely taste even that. There were quite a few shrimp with the dish, but unfortunately they were extremely overcooked. I grudgingly scarfed it down, thinking how could Yelp have been so wrong.

Even the check took a while to pay. After waiting for a while, my boyfriend got up to hand our cards to the hostess, who gave him a blank stare, as if she had no idea what to do with them. We flagged down our waiter, got our cards back, and quickly made for the door.

It could've been a bad night for them, but the four-star rating of Fragole misled us into a subpar dinner that was far from the perfect finish to a weekend. How they still had a full house, I have no idea…

  8. Another great great meal at Fragole. I took my girlfriend here for the first time. We shared a meat and cheese plate which was massive for a very reasonable price. We almost couldn't finish it but I persevered. I got the pesto gnocchi special while my girlfriend got the chicken cutlet with arugula and tomato. Both entrees were superb. The courses are delivered in a timely manner where you never feel rushed and can actually enjoy your wine with conversation. Will return for the third time very soon and my girlfriend is a future returning customer.
