This is more of a 3.5 star review, because I do want to let people know that I enjoyed this place. They have a good selection of bagels, and the bagels taste pretty good. Why am I removing stars then? Well I ordered an everything bagel with lox and veggie cream cheese. The amount of lox was good, but the cream cheese was not spread as thickly as I expect from a proper bagelry. Also the cream cheese was a little less creamy than I expected. Despite all this, the taste was quite good.
Another minus for this place is the service. The server behind the counter was a little confused, and took quite a bit of time to prepare my bagel. Also, when I asked the cashier how much one of the drinks were, he got confused as to what drink I was talking about and also did not know the price. Please know your products, at least vaguely know about it.
I'm not saying not to go, because the place is not bad by any means, but I just have no heart to give them four stars.
We've honestly NEVER had the bagels here, which is funny since that's their primary business, no?
We have ordered delivery from here for their Korean food about twice a month since they started offering Korean food!
Our go-tos: Omelet Rice (fried rice with a thin egg pancake on top with a happy face in ketchup! My childhood standby), bulgogi kimbap (like a giant sushi roll with vegetables and bulgogi, marinated beef), and tteokboki (spicy rice cakes – I call it Korean gnocchi for those not familiar).
We're such big fans, wish they had a larger menu, but they're a solid choice when we don't want to cook, and don't want to go out. Only Korean delivery available for us, and we take advantage of it as much as we can!
PS – don't order the jjajang ramen – my husband ordered it because he was craving jjajangmyun, but it was pretty much an order of jjapageti, unless that's what you want!
This is my go-to bagel spot in Astoria. I've only ordered breakfast sandwiched on bagels and coffee and they have always been good. I haven't really tried any of the other bagel places in the neighborhood, so I can't compare.
Another positive point for this place is the location. It is right near the subway, so it is really convenient if you want to eat there and then head straight to the subway station.
There are two main negatives to this place. First, the service can be a bit slow, especially when it gets busy. Also, they only take cash. If you know ahead of time this isn't a problem, but there are always people walking in and trying to pay with cards.
As a final note, this place is fairly small and has limited seating. When I go alone, I never have problems finding a seat, but it probably wouldn't be a good place to go with a big group of people.
I enjoy the bagels here my church friends and I have been coming here since we were in high school. My favorite growing up was a bagel with veggie cream cheese. But then a few years ago I became obsessed with sundries tomato cream cheese. Their cream cheese options are great. I had the lox one and it was pretty decent. My friends get the bacon egg and cheese and always loved it. I always had fast service at the place. The staff is friendly. I use to enjoy this place and still do.
I'm going with a solid 4 only because I went to Brooklyn Bagel the next day and was completely blown away.
The establishment itself is very small and only has a couple tables. I would recommend getting it to go and going back to your apartment if you live in walking distance. I'll be the first to admit that my order certainly wasn't incredibly complex – plain bagel toasted with plain cream cheese. It was a delicious bagel though. Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Great full-fat cream cheese too – the only way to go!
If you're looking for a quick bagel and coffee to go, you can't beat this place. The line moved FAST as well. It was right by the 30th Ave Station so it's perfect if you're heading in town.
After seeing so many Astorians go to this place, I wanted to check it out. So on a beautiful Saturday morning, I went for a little walk to get my breakfast.
1) I was delighted to see that they have asiago bagel, which is my favorite bagel in the world.
a. The bagel was a little lacking in asiago flavor and goodness.
2) Based on previous reviews about the haphazard service, I was prepared for it. I also suspected that the owners were probably Korean. Koreans specialize in haphazardness. We even have a special word for it — unctory bangtory (the best I can do phonetically for now). I love the onomatopoeia feel of the world as whenever I say it, I imagine big clunky block being strewn about and tumbling around creating a mess and haphazard conditions.
a. The owners are Korean. My ears confirmed it.
b. The guy who was helping me was very quick, efficient, and cheerful. Nothing lacking about the service when I was there.
3) Even though Phil. H. said only tourists get their bagels toasted, I got mine toasted.
a. I'm a transplant. I may be a New Yorker by circumstance, but I'm Californian by birth.
4) The bagel itself was adequate. It didn't have the same chewiness that Brooklyn Bagel has. Not a bad bagel and it'll do in a pinch. I prefer Brooklyn Bagel over Bagelberry, even though the lines are much longer. The bagels are more expensive over there, but the bagels are bigger and much better quality.
I was surprised at the quality of the bagel here, I figured that any place that is trying to do bagels froyo and whatever else they do can't be good.
The bagel had a nice crust on the outside side and a soft moist center, maybe a bit too doughy for me. The main thing that bothered me about the bagel is the same as every other place… not enough toppings. Just cover the whole bagel, is it really too much to ask?
Ever since I moved away from Broadway and Lots 'o Bagels near Broadway and 31st Street over to 30th Avenue, I've been struggling to find a good bagel place near the train that can replace my loss. Brooklyn Bagels* is good, BUT it's 1) overpriced, 2) always slammed, and 3) way in the opposite direction from the train.
FOOD: while they seem to serve the gamut from your typical bagel to sandwiches, etc., I've come here primarily for the bagels. My fiancee had tried them a few times and recommended them, so I decided why not? First, the bagels are a good size, not the tiny excuse for a bagel served by Bagels on the Ave (which is still run by the same people who owned the joint before they remodeled it). They are fresh, and they give you a generous portion of whatever spread you ask for.
SERVICE: this can be a little slow at times, but I've also been in during an "off" hour or day, so there was only one person behind the counter. I'll try out their morning slam when they have all hands on deck and see what happens.
PRICES: a little more than Lots 'o Bagels, but definitely cheaper than Brooklyn Bagels.
*does it bother anyone else that a chain in Astoria is called Brooklyn Bagels? Perhaps it's just my aversion to the hispterification of any area outside Brooklyn talking…
