  1. Poor Henry's is the craft beer drinkers dive bar.

When I say "dive bar" I mean that in the utmost respect.  It's an older style bar with with fun and engaged bar tenders, a slightly older yet fun crowd, good bar food, and a stellar craft beer selection.

The craft beer selection is downright phenomenal!  There's twenty five beers on tap and about ninety percent of them are amazing beers.  The owner, Jesse, does an amazing job at curating some of these brews; he always gets these awesome rare craft brews that I've never heard of.

The bar scene is pretty cool.  There's definitely a lot of regulars that come here; every time I come here I see a lot of familiar faces.  The bar tenders are pretty cool,  they're always friendly and will bs with you.  On the busy nights they have live music which adds to the atmosphere.

The food is pretty good too.  This is also a restaurant,  but I always go to the bar to eat (I need to be close to the taps lol).  One thing I love about this place is the fact that they have a salad bar; you never see them anymore.  In my last visit I ordered the chicken and waffles on the special menu, which was awesome!

This place is one of my top three bars in my area.

  2. It's been a long time since I was torn like this with a review.  I understand that this place is like a Montville landmark and the people who love this place love it because it's a part of their lives.  I also don't like how places like this can get a reputation for great food that's really just good food wrapped in good memories.

Anyway, I stopped in here the other day with my two kids before we ran over to Boonton Lanes.  It was a Wednesday afternoon and the place was pretty empty so I figured we'd get through lunch pretty quickly.  We sat down and our waitress got to us when she could (having never been here before she seemed like a regular-possibly one of the owners?-but seemed very frazzled).  Anyway, we ordered our drinks (Smithwick's, and two lemonades) and proceeded to check out the menu.

The drinks came over and we were on our way-my kids (being the creative and adventurous types-NOT) ordered the chicken parm over linguini and I ordered the Irish Bacon Burger with fries.  First off-my beer was good-cold and exactly what I needed .  The chicken parm meals were simply ok.  Pasta was done well, but the sauce was a bit bland, it's a pub though and I don't expect it to be homemade.  The chicken itself was also just ok.  A little too much breading, and it wasn't a fresh breast coated and made by hand-seemed like it was previously frozen and pre-made.

My burger on the other hand was very good.  It was cooked just how I like it and the cheese on top was very interesting (I assume it was Irish Cheddar, but I can't be sure) as it didn't seem like it was a slice of cheese, but almost like it was pre-melted and put on top of the burger.  The Irish bacon had a delicious flavor, but was overcooked and tough.  Fries seemed like they were also of the pre-packaged type.

An OK meal with my kids, with a Smithwick's…I've had worse lunches, that's for sure, but I think this one is only going to get Poor Henry's three stars.  Prices were a little high, but the do have great Wi-Fi in the place.  I bet this place is fun to come to as a bar rather than just for a meal, but I'll probably leave that up to the folks in Montville as it's a little too far to go just to have a few beers.

  3. Have always loved this place and they now have craft beer so it may have been cause of St. Paddy's but that was one small portion of fish w/ the fish & chips.

  4. I was an old school mainstay back when the place was in East Hanover.  I can't believe-especially in the internet era- that it slipped by me for so long that they'd moved to a new location.
That being said, it was like stepping back in time.  The look and decor are almost identical to the old location.  This was great for nostalgia, but not so great as far as the place simply looks dated.
The menu has changed with the years.  Gone are the complimentary Ziti Ap and my personal favorite Ap-Steamers!  Remaining is the fresh loaf of bread, served nice and warm with that terrific crust.
    Onto our experience.
The servers were so friendly.  They truly made us feel welcome.  They had that old school Jersey flavor, and I really liked that.
We shared a fried calamari Ap which was absolutely fine.  Not too heavy, though a touch oily and a marinara that had nothing special though was good enough..
The salad bar is a nice touch, though it has more or less basic ingredients and basic dressings.  It more or less allows you to customize your own basic salad, withholding any mainstay salad ingredients you may not care for.

My kids enjoyed their meals.  The burger was a pretty good size for a kids portion, and the sweet potato fries were crisp and quite tasty.  The bar pie was also a generous portion.  Nothing special, but my son liked it well enough.

I went with the pork shoulder special.  It was very good.  A nice bark with a nice crust, flavorful and juicy.  I was pretty impressed.
My wife went with the roast chicken which was more or less on par with a rotisserie bird you'd get from a super market.

The craft beer selection is pretty impressive.

I liked the separate dining and bar areas, though they could divided a little better.

If I lived locally, I could imagine myself being a somewhat regular, though I don't think it's a destination location.

  5. Descent place to go for beers and bar food in the area, inside decor is close to mid-century and a little dark. Not good for sporting events as the bar setup isn't great with TV's. The food was okay, nothing bad to speak of. I'll give it another chance as it seems to fill up and has been around for ages so it deserves another try.

Closed Saturday and Sunday for lunch, not sure if thats just during football season though.

  6. Old time tavern (old man bar) which has been here for eons.

It is what it is and it does it well.

    Cheap drinks and food.

    Service is fabulous.

I went with a gf and it was quiet enough for us to have a conversation.

    We will be back.

  7. We've been coming here for years when visiting family and with a recent move it's become our local (well, one of them 😉 )   The food is good although the menu has pretty much stayed the same since our first visit.  The atmosphere is fine in a (good) divey kind of way, service is good and overall it's reasonable value for money.

Poor Henry's point of difference is its bar.  There is an outstanding beer selection, which is constantly changing.  There are plenty of the standard session beers but for those wanting to try something different or even to just dip your toes into the amber waters of "craft beer", you will not be disappointed.

We used to take Grandma there for the salad bar, now we generally just hit the bar 🙂
