  1. A very average korean fast food spot. Not as good as Kimganae on Union st. However with the insane amount of traffic around Kimganae, had to settle for some kimbap on the outskirts of Flushing.

Opted for the spicy pork kimbap, not really spicy. Not even a hint actually. What it lacks in flavor, was made up with structural integrity. Doesn't fall apart after dipping into the rabbokki. Butt ends also stayed intact, can be a challenge with some restaurants.

Rabbokki ingredients had good texture. Instant noodle came out slightly raw (proper way) and cooked as it sat in the dish. More fish cakes than rice cakes, which i prefer, but some may not. Flavor was some what lacking in the rice cakes and sauce on the salty side.

The odeng soup tasted like most odeng soups. Only disappointment was a carrot was in there instead of scallions. A bit odd, usually scallions should be in there, carrots are just something I don't enjoy at all, in any situation.

  2. Kimbap, or Korean rice rolls, is the Korean answer to those who are in need of quick meals on the go. I had a bad hankering for some this past Saturday so I stopped in here to grab a bite. Most of the rolls on the menu hover around the $5-$7 mark, which is standard, and I was happy to see a wide enough variety that included several non-meat options (strict vegetarians – note that all rolls come with egg and fish cake, so simply ask them to leave these out when you order). I ordered two of them – the kimchee roll and the mushroom jalapeño roll. These were made fresh right behind the counter, bagged, and in my hand within six minutes (yes, I kept track because my meter was running), which I found pretty impressive, especially since both rolls also came with free containers of soup.

I wish I were just as bowled over by the food. In their haste to get the rolls out, it would seem that they were carelessly and inconsistently sliced, with some being cut too thick or too thin (causing the fillings to sloppily tumble out before it even got to my mouth). The rice to filling ratio was also fairly meager, making each bite nearly all filling. I wouldn't have taken too much umbrage with that, except that I ordered two pungently flavored rolls – the kimchee roll was like eating mouthfuls of only tangy cabbage, leaving me little room to discern any other flavors and the pickled jalapeños in the roll that followed just tumbled my tongue into more acidic flavor. The spicy miso soup that came with it was a warm and welcome respite, providing new flavors that my meal so desperately needed.

My particular rolls were disappointing, but Kim-bob Nara isn't completely sunk in my book. The menu expands well beyond rolls, including some childhood favorites of mine (like spicy rice cakes), and I'd be amenable to trying them again at some point. Clearly Kim-bob Nara is clearly prepared for such rapid, takeout orders like mine but the lovely décor temporarily entices one to dine in. Though there's only space for a few small tables, the interior is thoughtfully dressed with calming wood and café style accents.

  3. I tried this for the first time when my boss bought it for me. I like their beef and pork cutlet rolls. From the last time i went, they used a lot more filling than other places which i like. I like when the rice layer is thin and this place offers it! The price is the same as those of other places so I'm not worried about that. I don't know how their other dishes are….. but i probably go again just for the kimchi.
