Caracas Arepa Bar

“For apps I would pass on the croquetas and head straight for the Tostones Mochimeros, they are crunchy and have a great topping.”

“We usually order a fabulous rum drink, arepas of all sorts (pernil, la surena, los muchachos), guasacaca and platain chips.”

“The menu is the same — the "de Pabellon" and "La Mulata" are my personal favorites — and there are some nice appetizers too.”

  1. Came here for some post happy hour eats, and we were very pleasantly surprised to see a number of free tables in the back outdoor space. Definitely a great place to be on a summer Friday. The inside looks sort of like your typical dive, only with Venezuelan music playing around the clock, and the smells of pork shoulder and other meats stewing in the air, an almost intoxicating aroma.

I went with my usual Cusquena, and we ordered a couple arepas: the la de pernil (duh), and the la surena (chicken). La de pernil was juicy, fatty, and just what you want out of a pork shoulder arepa, and the spicy mango sauce really just puts it over the edge. Gotta have la de pernil (pork shoulder). It's just how it's gotta be. La Surena was a really nice contrast of flavors and textures, all the way from the chicken, to the chorizo, and avocado. Very satisfying, but still nothing compared to the pernil.

Service was pretty friendly and attentive, and it was nice not being in as cramped a space as the East Village location. The arepa really is filling, but in terms of actual amounts of food, it's a bit small for the price, in my opinion. Nonetheless, it's hard to get a good arepa in the city, so that is the premium you pay.

Great to see that the quality is by no means diluted or somehow worse than the original East Village location. Also, as I've discovered that it's not a bad place with outdoor space in the summer, I'm inclined to have a future Brooklyn happy hour out here, which is nice because you know the food's gonna be on point.

  2. Embarrassingly enough, this was my first time having arepas. I've done the empanada thing before, obviously, but this was a new experience. Did not hate it.

Got the tilapia avocado, flavors I'm super familiar with. I was really into the arepa shell/crust. Would eat again.

  3. We came on a slow Sunday afternoon.  The place was half full, but the service was still slow.  We came during happy hour (4-7pm), so I ordered the sangria.  We started off with some chips and guacamole.  The chips were actually plantain chips, which we wish we would've known before ordering.  It's just a different taste than what we were looking for.  I got the Hot Queen Arepa (pulled chicken, pepper, onions, mayo, avocado) and my BF got a special arepa made with pork.  Both arepas were yummy, but everything else leading up to it sort of threw us off.  I'd like to go back to try more arepas.

  4. I've only had arepas from one other place and I think they're super delicious. My bf used to frequent this place when he lived in NYC, so we came here for lunch with some friends. We ordered the passionfruit juice and an order of croquetas to start. The juice is pretty tart and I didn't like it too much at first, but got used to it after awhile. The croquetas were super tasty. They were served with a green sauce, which was delicious on them, but I loved putting their house sauce on them as well. Actually, their house sauce would taste good on anything. We tried the la sureña arepa, which was filled with chicken, chorizo and avocado. It was a hearty and filling meal.

The drinks and starters came out pretty quickly, but the restaurant started to fill up and I noticed our group of six was left waiting for quite a bit of time to get our arepas. Overall, a great place to go for lunch or dinner.

  5. The arepas are great. You can all different flavored. The drinks are great.  The atmosphere was fun. I loved the corn on the cob appetizer with parmesan cheese.

  6. This place is overated and expensive. An Arepa for $9.25 whereas other places sell them max. $7 per piece. The taste and the size is not that great compared to other places. The taste is somehow dry. In addition, this place does not offer free Guasacaca (green sauce) as it should traditionally be.

If you go to other places that make Venezuelan food such as Guacuco in Brooklyn, Arepas Cafe in Astoria, and Bella Caracas Cafe in Brooklyn, they make the arepas tastier, juicier, cheaper, in bigger proportions, and provide free Guasacaca sauces.

If you want to compare apples to apples, please try out Venezuelan food at Guacuco, Arepas Cafe, and Bella Caracas Cafe to open up your view on how the Arepas experience should be!

  7. Ok so. The arepas are amazing. Some more than others. We got a pork one which was SO good. So much meat that was so tender and juicy and MMM. And then one ended up being basically a chicken salad with avocado instead of mayo. And it was good, yeah, but in comparison to the pork one felt a little sadder. We also made it in time for happy hour so we're able to grab a cheaper margarita and dark and stormy which were good and strong.

Oh, and the bottle is of sauce on the table, whatever it is, I want it at home so I can put it on everything.

  8. It's been a couple of years since I've been here and it's just as I remember it. The arepas are delicious and filling. We got the la sureña and some croquetas which were both delicious. The house sauce is amazing and can never get enough.

Waiters are great and friendly, but service is a tad slow. We were a big group but it seams like they were running a tad bit behind. We also got a passion fruit jugo but it was bitter for our taste. Food still amazing so go to Williamsburg for this spot!
