  1. Came here with a friend on a Wednesday night for a quick bite, we only have appetisers and drinks, but had a really good dining experience, would love to come back again for a proper meal.

The Mango Margarita was tasty and strong, Croqueta de Cangrejo (crab cake) and Tostaditas de Salmon (Salmon tartar) were delicious. We were in hurry and didn't have time for a proper meal, but there was another family next to our table had lots of dishes, they smelt and looked awesome. I hope to come back again to try the main dishes.

The service was also great, our waitress was very attentive and friendly. Gave us good recommendation! This is not a fancy place but it's cozy and comfortable. I'd totally come back again when I am in the area.

  2. This place gets better and better. It's rare to find a place that does Latin food with so much joy, care and flare. Combine this with impeccable and casual service and you've got yourself a regular. I love Cascalote. The only change I would make is to have them be in a bigger space. I'm afraid once everyone starts flocking here It will be challenging to get a seat.

See review below for first five visits.

    Brunch worthy spot.

So, Anthony Bourdain says not to eat eggs Benedict at any restaurant for good reason. See my review for Maison Harlem if you want to know why.

Cascalote's brunch menu is pithy. They focus on doing the very best at what they do.

I've ordered pretty much every brunch item – short ribs Benedict, dulce de leche pancakes. But it's really the eggs Benedict cascalote which carries this entire review.

The potatoes are sautéed with peppers and onions. Not mushy or an afterthought. They are firm, soft, crispy and well seasoned.

The Cascalote Benedict consists of two hefty crab cakes topped with sautéed spinach, poached eggs and a rich, creamy spicy hollandaise sauce. It is out of bounds.

The crab cake is chunky, creamy and firm on the inside with a crispy panko crust on the outside. It is beyond delicious. Spinach is not wet but sautéed. The eggs poached perfectly. No water. Nor over cooked. Then topped with a rich buttery hollandaise. Worth every plank pose and mountain climber.

They have a full bar. As well as coffee, jarritos and aguas.

The decor is perfectly comfortable. The whole restaurant seats maybe 25 small people.

The music wafting in the background varies from reggaeton, elie Goulding, to rated X hip hop. In my mind it kind of completes the whole Spanish Harlem vibe.

Staff is well trained albeit not fancy.

But, oh well. Come to Cascalote Bistro for the best brunchy breakfast you will have for many years to come.

  3. I found this interesting, small restaurant that provides Latin dishes with a Mexican twist. That got my curiosity enough to venture out to the area I usually don't visit.

The inside is pretty small, so it gets packed pretty quickly. The fact that they are a popular spot also helps, of course.

We went there during brunch, and they had some interesting brunch menu. I heard everyone talks about their Tres Leches pancakes, which sounded really interesting, but we decided to try other items. For one, I also heard that the pancakes are a bit small, and also, we were thinking of ordering dessert, so we didn't want to get too much of sweet stuff altogether.

We ordered Costillitas Benedicto and Desayuno Mexicano. They were both nice but not amazing. The little potato croquette that came with the Desayuno Mexicano was really great. The dessert was just ok… I had high expectation for this place, so it was kind of disappointing.

The staffs were not very friendly. The service was ok, not great. The food was good, but I am not sure if I would go back again. If I do, I will skip the dessert next time. If I am in the area for another reason, then I would like to try their creative menu again, but I don't think I will travel there just to visit the restaurant. 4. Customer service is great. We wanted to move because the AC was on blast, but they turned it off instead.

Guacamole was really good. Super fresh! I don't even like avocado, but I ate this guac. This is literally the first guac I've continued eating, ever.

The shrimp quesadilla came with beans, which I scraped off. After removing the beans the best I could, the quesadilla was really good. The shrimp were crispy and the veggies were fresh. Very savory.

Prices are on the expensive side ($10 for guac), but food was worth it.

  5. A lot of reviews were about brunch so I was a bit wary about coming for dinner. However it was so good!!!! This is a cozy intimate restaurant with friendly service that serves authentic food. We split the guacamole and for mains tried the shrimp with quinoa risotto cooked in a chipotle butter and the pork chop. Both dishes were cooked expertly; the shrimp sauce was amazing, a great combo of chipotle butter and cheese. The pork chop was tender and juicy and came with this buttery onion relish on top. Super good food, not the cheapest but you get what you pay for in quality. Would love to come back!

  6. Popped in here for lunch while visiting some friends in the city.  Our table had the short ribs eggs Benedict, a burrito & huevos hornados (sp).  The short ribs Benedict were the table favorite, the biscuit on the bottom (rather than English muffin) made the dish in my opinion.  The portion was fairly large, we wished we had shared and skipped the burrito.  Margaritas were on point.

The menu at the restaurant was more limited than what's posted on yelp, but still full of yummy sounding options.

One criticism- I was accidentally charged the happy hour price for my drink even though it wasn't happy hour.  After taking my ticket & card, they came back to tell me they adjusted it for the higher price, $4 more.  That's fine as I had planned for the regular cost, but I feel like it would have been a nice gesture (and good business) to let that one slide.

  7. Amazing casual Latin restaurant with interesting menu items and outstanding food for brunch/ lunch …service was friendly… I saw several dishes come out that looked amazing – I ordered  a short rib Benedict dish (I forget what it was called on the menu) –  how they prepared the dish and how delicious it was- wonderful.  This dish was recommended to me, and the couple sitting next to us who were regulars said that's the best/ their favorite dish. Soooo good!

  8. The food here was fantastic! It sure is a hidden gem up in East Harlem. I was looking for a brunch spot that didn't serve the standard eggs and pancakes fare, and Cascalote stepped up to the plate. Every component of my short ribs eggs benedict was perfect. What would have been the standard Hollandaise sauce was tinged slightly orange and was spicy – I'm not quite sure what it was, but the flavors were assertive and definitely memorable. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly with no strong vinegar kick, there was plenty of fresh spinach, and the short ribs were tender and flavorful. Instead of a standard English muffin, they used a biscuit which absorbed all the sauce very well. The home fries was also spiced and fried to a nice crisp. I really have no complaints about this dish at all.

My boyfriend ordered the crabcake eggs Benedict, and the crabmeat was savory and fresh and plump and incredibly yummy.

I would probably not get cocktails here as it's a little expensive for the neighborhood and not that special.
