  1. I came here with my friend for dinner once.

The restaurant is dark – I could barely read the menu but no biggie. My friend chose the options.

I like that they had a pretty extensive menu.

The food was good and filling, my friend ended up taking the rest home with her because we couldn't finish it all. The prices were decent.

I feel like I've had better Indian before but this was definitely pretty darn good. I usually prefer mine a bit spicier. It may have been just what we ordered.

I'm definitely interested in returning and trying some of their other dishes.

  2. Honestly, I was hoping for much better food from here, very disappointed!  We live one town over and were looking for good Indian food insted of having to drive down to Oak Tree road. We called ahead for pick up – we are anti delivery (too many variables) We ordered a couple of chicken dishes, samosas, lamb biriyani, basmati rice and naan. The samosas were on the smaller side, bland.  The curries were greasy lackng in flavor. Biryani, terrible – dripping in grease they also put tomatoes and rasins in it – maybe its a regional thing. Yellow basmati rice – when I ordered i asked for a side of basmati rice, she said yellow rice – uuuh yeah, I guess, totally bewildered by the yellow rice statement, was I ordering Spanish food?
Well we gave it a try, and we will just stick to the bevy of great Indian places on Oak Tree!

  3. Oh gosh, below average Indian here.  I cannot believe family recommended this place.  It was not spicy.  The food was lacking flavor.  I will not be back,

  4. Solid indian cuisine. I ordered the shrimp dansik, it was very flavorful with lots of gravy. The shrimp were big and there were a fair amount. I also had some roti bread which was warm and had a nice taste, especially dipped in the gravy of my entree. You can bring your own wine which is good. The is ok for groups but seems definitely more for one on one settings and its kinda dark, like some place you'd suggest for a friend you hooked up a blind date with. The staff are nice and the food came fairly quick for our group.

  5. Not very good. The Chicken Tikka Masala was WAY over-seasoned; why would they drop a pound of herbs on top of it like that? And the presentation was a little sloppy; it was nearly overflowing out of one of those metal serving dishes. The chicken was way overcooked and the sauce was just eh. I'm picky about my Indian food, it's SO hit or miss and this was a solid miss. The owner was really nice, though, he brought my boyfriend and I two free samosas. My boyfriend doesn't like Indian food, though, which he seemed confused about. Nice gesture, though. Besides that, the service was a little dismissive EXCEPT for the constant water refilling and standing around staring at you while you're eating, but that is typical of the Indian restaurant experience. I had to hunt him down to pay and wait awhile before ordering. Also, it's way too dark in there, like a movie theater! :/

A note to the owner. Don't assume I can't handle spice because I'm a white girl. You didn't need to remind me twice that the chile nan was spicy, that's WHY I ordered it! :p

  6. Don't be fooled by the modest exterior, as soon as we walked we were greeted with warm ambient lighting and deep red walls. The decor made me smile immediately and the place was crowded…always a good sign.

The waitstaff were very friendly and immediately served us papadan, which was very light and crispy, almost paper thin.

We ordered lamb biriani and tandoori chicken. The lamb was plentiful and cooked perfectly with an abundance of vegetables as well. The tandoori chicken was also very tender, served with lentils and rice. The portions were generous and both were excellent. My only comment was that I wish the lentils were warmer. I will dream about the lamb until we come back.

Will definitely be back…very good food, cooked perfectly, reasonable prices and BYOB.

  7. Coworkers and I come here for lunch from time to time whenever we want to over stuff ourselves with curry and naan. We don't need to travel over 10 miles to Iselin to get tasty Indian food.

I usually get the 'star of India' which comes with some grilled kebobs and lamb curry with naan and rice. That is enough for lunch and sometimes dinner for later. I'm pretty sure the spiciness is dumbed down for the average Indian person but its legit enough for me.

My gripe is the dim lighting inside.

    cc accepted.

  8. Probably my favorite Indian spot to date, Star of India looked legit from the moment we drove up to it. Very small from the outside, with a "hole-in-the-wall" look that usually goes with most authentic places. It didn't disappoint at all.

    +Ambiance
My one knock is that it's a bit dark inside. Granted, it lends itself to an intimate mood (which I DO like), it was definitely a bit TOO dark. Not a game changer, but something to note that effects the experience a bit.

    +Appetizers
NAAN with Garlic and cheese/hard pita with various dips — all of these were great. They serve you a plate of hard pita that you can snap off and dip in four sauces. One was sweet, the other spicy, another creamy/cucumber based, and the last was red with a bit of texture (tasted like a salsa of some sort). All very good.

    +Meal
Had to go with my measuring stick/staple of Indian cuisine: Lamb Vindaloo. I get this at every Indian place we eat at, and Star of India did it PERFECTLY. At other places (such as nearby Bombay Bistro), it's often overkill with the spice/curry taste. Even though some spice is expected win a Vindaloo dish, Star of India hit the sweet spot: it was a good amount of spice, but nothing that necessitates the need to sip water after each bite. The sauce and yellow rice were spot-on and done beautifully. Fantastic blend of Indian spices to taste truly authentic.

All of these (combined with a price tag of roughly $35 for two people) led me to the 4/5 rating. Definitely would travel by nearby Bombay Bistro to give Star of India my business for solid, authentic Indian cuisine.
