  1. This was on my bookmarks to try since it opened. It was a 5-10 mins wait for a table when we got there so my friend ordered a Sangria at the bar. Finally we got a table by the window where there was a commotion happening right outside the restaurant. Why get one dish for one another…its much better trying a little of everything from Platos Chicos section of the meu. Our server Angelo was friendly, attentive and always have a big, happy smile on his face. Whenever he checked up on us, I would replied "Mama Like" and its the honest truth sooooooo yummy in my tummy! Angelo brought out a huge plate with everything was plated to minimize our table space so thoughtful =)

Food (shared): Carimanolas (omg love these Yuca and Mozzarella Cheese balls), Patacones (the shredded beef topping is my favorite as I am beast when it comes to red meat lol), and Taco de Pescado (wooooo very yummy and impacted with a lot of flavor profile)

Dessert: Passion Fruit Tres Leches (my friend's order) and Vanilla Flan (my order…I love FLAN yo)

Add this baby to your bookmarks because its worth yo!

  2. My husband and I were taking a stroll in the neighborhood when he began to feel his stomach growl. So when we saw Matiz we decided to give it a try. At first when we walked in we were completely ignored, even though the bartender and the waiter helping a table clearly had seen us.  At least acknowledge us??

After a few moments we were finally seated. My husband ordered the Arepitas for a starter and the Bandeja Matiz while I ordered the Pollo Matiz.

When the Arepitas finally came it smelled soo good, and our stomachs were already aching with hunger so we dove right in. Although they were small in size, boy did they pack a punch. It was very unique to have the meat salty and then finish with the sweetness of the corn arepas on the bottom. It was delicious. When we finished, we were very excited for our entrees because we were definitely not disappointed with our starter.

Both entrees were OMFG. My husband loved the way the steak was cooked and marinated as well as the sauce that was drizzled on it, for mine the potatoes were cooked to perfection and the sauce was out of this world. They were very flavorful and I really enjoyed it.

The bread pudding to conclude this wonderful meal was also very good. It was came piping hot from the kitchen with a side of vanilla ice cream and some kind of cherry or raspberry sauce.

During the duration of the meal the waitress was very attentive even though we didnt feel so welcomed in the beginning. But the meal was SUPERB.

  3. Every time a business closes in Forest Hills I hope that something awesome will come in its place…please let it not be yet another bank, little clothing boutique that no one will enter, or medical office.  When Matiz opened, I was cautiously optimistic. A food establishment would be just as useless as the 15th bank if I wasn't ever going to frequent it due to crappy food (::cough:: TGIF ::cough::).

To my delight, Matiz is definitely a new awesome spot in the neighborhood I was hoping for.  I have had 3 meals here so far and enjoyed them all.  However, their dishes are a bit pricey for me to consider them as a cost effective regular alternative to home cooking.

Calamari – Not my favorite here.  It's okay, Ive just had better.  Comes with 3 sauces.
Carimanolas – Yucca cake balls stuffed with mozzarella cheese and chipotle aioli mayo sauce.  This was as awesome as you'd expect a ball of fried cheese to be.  Like a cheese stick but in ball form with more flavor.
Churrasco – skirt steak with chimichurri sauce and spinach.  Steak was tender and flavorful.
Bandeja matiz – If you like variety then this is the dish to order.  It comes with columbian rice topped with a runny egg, a bowl of beans, pork cracklings, chorizo sausage, a piece of skirt steak, sweet plantains, sliced avocado, and a corn cake.  Everything tasted great.
cameron brasileno – jumbo shrimp in a creamy coconut tomato sauce with rice on the side. The sauce had great flavor and you get a decent amount of shrimp.  I think my only complaint is that it seems they used a bag of frozen veggies (peas/beans) in here.  With a price tag of $24 for the dish I am expecting fresh food not frozen veggies from a bag.
Tres leches – Tres leches delivered to me as take out was better than the tres leches when I ate in at the restaurant.  As odd as that sounds.  Perhaps they changed recipes/suppliers?
Bread pudding with ice cream – nothing memorable.  I would skip dessert at this place and go to marthas instead if you don't mind walking a few blocks.  It's just better.

  4. When a fellow Yelper bookmarked this place it piqued my interest. Once our movie was over I wanted to surprise babe for dinner.

Oh Matiz, you had me at Hello.

We were immediately greeted by the hostess and seated. We were given menus and a few minutes to decide. Although the selection of drinks were limited, I wasn't sure want I wanted to drink.

After some time I decided to go with the white sangria our waitress suggested. He ordered the Jardin Prohibida. His drink was awesome. My sangria was bitter and lacked the sweetness I'm used to. I sent it back.

I went with The Monroe and that wasn't good either. It was bitter and relied too heavily on the lime juice. Our waitress was a complete doll because she went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied. She asked me to explain what I wanted and once I did a smile was plastered on my face.

For our apps we started out with Beef Quesadillas and the special of the night, Shrimp Empanaditas. Far from anything I've ever tasted both apps made me secretly moan the word yum. Not lacking in flavor nor quantity I would recommend these apps to everyone.

For our entrees he had the Pollo Matiz and I had the
Taco De Pescado. Both equally phenomenal dishes. Savory and flavored with lots of love. The service was great. The ambience was intimate and sexy.

  5. This is an incredible establishment! While my friend was staying at my apartment the other weekend, we wanted to grab something nearby to eat. I wanted a notch up from your typical Mexican food, and boy did I hit the nail on the head. Great food, great ambience, and awesome dining experience. The service was superb and to eat in the cozy space they have is wonderful. I got some of their shrimp ceviche and some tacos which were absolutely out of this world. I will definitely be returning and/or ordering online from them in the future!! A+ restaurant!

  6. Um wow! This place has awesome food!!! Was having a small get together with some old highschool friends and one friend suggested this spot. I'm so glad she did! Loved the food, loved the service too! Very attentive waitress and very pleasant. I also like the fact that we closed the place down and they didn't rush us out. I also like the ambiance inside- it's not that big of a place but it's cozy and affordable. There were 5 of us and the bill really wasn't that much. Also- The food portions were really big! I had lots of leftovers haha oh- and one more thing, we ordered lots of sangria and it was tasty and strong! Real nice! I recommend getting a pitcher if you're there with someone else!

I'm definitely going to return here!

  7. 3.5 stars. The seafood paella was tasty, but very small and fried yuca fries were made to order so be careful, they're extremely hot! The food portion here is quite small, but if you like to do family style, you can always order lots of apps and a few entrees so you can taste more than 1-2 items on the menu. I like the guacamole trio which came with regular, pineapple and cheese chunks in it and the shrimp ceviche, which was served in a martini glass with sweet plantain chips.

The service here was pretty good. Always checked up on us and came around to refill our water cups. The sangria here is decent, not much alcohol in it. The soda here is very very flat, since they use the soda guns, instead of can soda. Overall, the price was pretty fair, considering the size of the plates.

  8. Great little addition to the neighborhood! Had dinner here on a Friday night and very much enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Our waiter was very pleasant and the decor was very pleasing to the eye. I found the prices to be a little high- you're paying Manhattan prices here, but given the area it really isn't anything outrageous.

Fish tacos were alright, but the pepper and crab dip was really wonderful. We ordered the crispy snapper and shrimp in coconut sauce, of which the latter was better. They were out of the sauvignon blanc that we originally requested and so we agreed to the chardonnay that they suggested, which ended up being more expensive. Also, they had electronic candles on the table which gave off a cheap feel.

We got the tres leches to go and that was phenomenal. Overall, Matiz is a good restaurant that has the potential to become great with some tweaking.
