  1. After seeing a Broadway show, myself and five others headed to Il Punto Ristorante for dinner. We had a reservation and I highly suggest planning one, as people attempting to walk in were being turned away. The restaurant consists of 3 rooms, side by side, with the first room containing a small bar area. Upon entering, the hostess checked our coats and led us to a large table in a private corner area. Our table was perfect, as we were all able to talk to each other and it was pretty quiet in this back corner. Our server was extemely friendly and helpful with making recommendations. There is a prix-fixe theater menu, although we all decided to order off the regular menu. The menu is pretty large, with various antipasti, pastas and entrees. There is definitely something for everyone! The wine list is also pretty expansive and our server helped us select which bottles to try based  on the flavors we were looking for. We were very pleased with the Collefrisio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and the Angelije 2014 Pinot Noir (both about $35/bottle. For appetizers, we ordered Calamari Fritti ($16) and Carciofini Ripieni ($16). The calamari was tender but crispy, and was served with three different sauces, a spicy sauce, a milder red sauce, and an aioli. I would rate this calamari slightly better than your average, but still pretty standard. The Carciofini Ripieni was stuffed artichoke hearts, stuffed with herbs and breadcrumbs, and a bit of cheese, served with red sauce on the side. The flavor was nice, but they were very mushy and broke apart as I tried to cut them , making a mess of my plate. The red sauce was very tasty, a little salty and a little sweet. Overall, the group I was with enjoyed the appetizers. For our main course, everyone ordered something different. I ordered the Tortellini ai Porcini ($22), which was meat tortellini cooked with porcini mushrooms, shallots, sage, tomato comfit and truffle EVOO. This was a VERY tasty dish. The subtle hint of truffle was present but not overpowering. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly and the tortellini were pillowy on the outside but the meat was dense inside, the perfect balance. My friend was very pleased with her choice of Salmone ($30),which I happily tried. The salmon was seared with perfection, and topped with beets, with an asparagus reduction drizzled on the dish. The dish was simple, but very tasty. It was served with lemon flavored mashed potatoes on the side, which I couldn't get enough of, although I couldn't really taste the lemon flavor. However, they were the perfect consistency , nice and creamy.  Overall, everyone seemed to be pleased with their meal, and my friend was very impressed with her Fettuccine Nere in Saute di Cozzi ( $22), which was handmade squid ink Fettuccini cooked with mussels and served in sauce of grape tomatoes and lemon zest. We passed on dessert, as we were full from the larger portions. However, the server did bring us a complimentary plate of chocolates and biscottis, which was a very nice touch. In the end, we had a really enjoyable meal with good food, excellent service, and pretty reasonable prices. I will be back next time I am in the city in the Broadway area.

  2. Just stopped by last Thursday for lunch and it was once again incredible! Though it was special to have the place nearly by myself since was late afternoon, I enjoyed it by the front window looking out on a blue sky day. The natural sunlight coming in made my fix-price lunch special a super relaxed experience. I had a veal entree which was so flavorful. It was provided after an on-the house mini soup along with bread slices and crispy breadsticks. The special came out to about $33 aside from tip with a beer. I couldn't be happier considering it was a 3-course meal (the desert was beautiful!). Anyway, just confirming this restaurant is a must-visit for a great experience and well portioned italian food!!

  3. Stuffed Artichoke Appetizer. Swoon.

I had to get that out there because I have basically been yelling it from every midtown hotel rooftop since I went. I am crazy, unapologetically obsessed with the stuffed artichoke appetizer from Il Punto.

I'm fairly obsessed with the rest of the food too. Here's how it all went down:

My dad wanted to have a family dinner. Not too many of us, just his wife, my brother, my husband and me. We always, ALWAYS go to Casa Nonna, mostly because the food is pretty decent and we can always get a table and it's near everyone's offices.

We had been there so many times however, that even my father, a true creature of habit, texted me bright and early on Monday morning "Il Punto crnr 38 / 9 ave. 615". Sorry, but that is the verbatim text. He just got his very first iPhone and likes texting because I respond to that over a phone call, but he's very, very bad at it.

So the point of that was to explain that I was very surprised that we were going to try something new. I was also very surprised that it was some place I had never heard of on 9th avenue. I did some Yelping and saw that people seemed to like it a lot. Okay, I'm game.

My dad and brother were sitting at the bar when I arrived. They had an anti-pasta platter of Italian meats and cheeses, olives and some bread. I honestly didn't try any of it. I was busy being the center of attention and telling everyone about what I had been up to of course. Yep, I am very fun to dine with. Whatever. I did order wine of course and asked for a Riesling. Usually, it's pretty hard to find a sweet Riesling by the glass. The first one they offered me was a winner and I happily sipped on that. Very fresh, not too floral and definitely sweet, not dry. Hooray!

The place is pretty classic mom and pop shop trying to look like Italy is all around you. I usually honestly judge a place by the decor, which I know is frowned upon in most foodie circles, but I'm a sucker for ambiance and no one solicited your opinion.

Moving on, the rest of our party arrived and we were seated at a nice big table and were given pretty large menus to look over. My brother and I decided to share two appetizers so we could try multiple dishes. We went with the stuffed artichokes and the caprese salad.

The caprese salad was really very good, you know the mozzarella is what makes it and this cheese didn't disappoint. The tomatoes were fresh and crisp and the balsamic was a little earthy and not too overpowering. I do have to say, it was good, but it's never my favorite meal so I moved right on over to the artichokes.

These were ridiculous. I mean really, really ridiculous. They were stuffed artichoke hearts and the stuffing was full of every Italian herb ever. The whole thing was drizzled in olive oil and just worked. I was pretty pissed when I had to give half to my brother to try as well. Lesson learned. Sharing sucks.

I had the Chilean seabass as an entree and was very, very happy with it. It was well flavored with a little bit of olive oil and lemon juice, but mostly the fish just stood on it's own. I often judge fish on it's consistancy and this one was perfectly light and flaky. You could just easily tap it with your fork and a piece was ready for eating. It was a hearty piece too, so no one left hungry, thank god.

It also came with light bed of sauteed mushrooms, which were so good too, but I honestly was so full and couldn't even finish my plate which is a true rarity.

I really can't wait to go back. I want to try more things from the menu. Maybe to the tune of their seafood risotto? Ugh, now I'm hungry. You should definitely come on over to ninth avenue and try this, especially since the staff is just so sweet and friendly. And the wine is delish. So you go. Take me with you.

  4. I loved everything about this place! The atmosphere and service were great, but the food was exceptional!  I ordered the octopus salad for an appetizer, pasta with pine nuts and berries, and a chocolate lava cake.  My friend ordered the stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer and wheat pasta with raspberry vodka sauce, mushrooms, and shallots.  All of the food was delicious, but my pasta entree really stood out.  The mix of the pine nuts, cheese, and berries made for a very unique flavor!  The presentation was very appealing, and I loved the basil sauce cleft notes drizzled on the side of all of the plates.  If I am ever in the area again, I will be dining here!

  5. I rarely give restaurants 5 stars. I was actually blown away by the quality of service and food. A group of 14 girls came here for a birthday dinner. We changed the reservation the day of the dinner from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. The restaurant were very accommodating and told us it would be ok.

The restaurant was clean and the food was better than we expected. The Chilean seabass was cooked perfectly. The fish was flaky and crispy on the outside. It also came with a side of vegetables. The homemade squid ink pasta was really good as well. It wasn't heavy at all. We also order a sirloin medium rare. The meat was juicy. All the food had amazing presentation. Too bad I didn't try other dishes that my girlfriends ordered.

Must get the chocolate soufflé for dessert!! Tiramisu was really good too. My mouth is watering as I'm writing this review. I would definitely go back to this restaurant.

  6. Nice ambiance.  We came for my birthday on a Monday. The food was amazing, the wine was perfect.  Not quite family friendly since I had both kids with me – but no one looked at us sideways.  The staff was attentive and nothing was lacking.  It was very $$$$.  5 adults and 2 kids (7 alcoholic drinks, 3 apps, 3 desserts) was $500.  Yikes!!!!
I'd definitely recommend this place for dates – leave the kids at home.

  7. Okay- went to NYC and found a great review of Il Punto on YELP. And I trust my fellow YELPers. Once again, they did not let me down.

From the moment we walked in the service was excellent. We were greeted at the door by a host with a sexy accent, who then came to the table to take our order. I told him I like dry chardonnay and I was not familiar with the wines on the list. He brought a bottle over for me to try. I loved his suggestion and had 2 glasses of it. How fun to find a new wine!

I ordered Chilean sea bass that was light and flavorful. It came with zucchini rolls- zucchini sliced thin and rolled around a flavorful breadcrumb mix that burst in my mouth. Wish there was more.

I'll admit- got bad times in my life right now. Dinner here was the perfect antidote. I would be happy to return for a meal when back in NYC.

  8. Very nice atmosphere and good service.  Place is a little on the smaller side so expect a more intimate experience.  The restaurant is not too loud and is very conducive to good dinner conversation.  They have a good menu with some interesting pasta choices and a lot of the standard Italian menu options.  I have eaten in a lot of higher end Italian places.  Is Il Punto one of the absolute best – no.  Does Il Punto disappoint – no also.  I would definitely recommend.
