“They grill the meat over charcoal right in front of you- probably helped in the awesome taste of the meat!”

“I can happily give a thumbs up to their oyster soondubu and the kimchi jigae is also an easy choice for the light hearted appetite.”

“Unlike many places, this place has grills installed at the tables and uses real coals, so you can cook your own tasty Korean BBQ.”

  1. Eight banchans, steamed egg, green onion salad, lettuce wraps, and some doenjang paste to accompany tabletop BBQ. The banchan I liked best were the potato salad, anchovies, bean sprouts, steamed egg, and spinach – very good!

An order of shrimp which was grilled over hot coals was slightly sweet and tasty. An order of kalbi was also excellent though veering towards the sweet side as well. A few rings of onion and one-fourth of a king oyster mushroom accompanied the platters.

A bottle of biofeel rounded out the meal.

This place looks like a typical Korean BBQ place.

  2. Solid authentic Korean food and great service from the ladies. By authentic I mean the BBQ is cooked with quality coals not natural gas. As a big group, we ordered spicy and non-spicy hot pots, BBQ kalbis, chicken breast, short ribs, and marinated beef. Everything was delicious so do the complimentary appetizers and steamed eggs.
The steamed egg was my favorite of the night – cooked and served in a hot stone while still
boiling! It's fluffy, rich, and juicy! Hmmmm, yum! Can't stop for another bite.

We ended up 34.5pp with unfinished food. It was worth the deal and service. Ladies helped us cooking the BBQ meats and kept refilling our favorite small dishes like steamed egg and seaweed salad. Will come back and say hi to the friendly ladies!

  3. You're thrown off because they have sushi too. When they have two Asian restaurants in one, you think twice, but So Moon Nan Jip is NOT that case. Both sushi and their Korean food is awesome.

I came here a few years ago and recently visited again. My university friend (who's not Korean) lives in Pal Park and he says So Moon Nan Jip is where all the "locals" go and has sushi and Korean, so if you're not in the mood for one, you can always have the other.

I will say that their small dishes could have more variety, but the ones you get are quite tasty. Their kimchi is surprisingly spicy, but still has some flavor in it. I'm a big fan of a good mix of both because a lot of the times the spiciness overpowers the taste.

We ordered kalbi bbq, soondubu and a seafood pancake for three and almost didn't finish the seafood pancake. FYI about bbq, if you order only one order of meat, they make it in the back, if you order a set menu, they'll cook it in front of you.

You could not adjust the spicy level of my soondubu, but do not worry, it was not very spicy at all and actually one of the best soondubu's I've ever had….ever.

The service is really on point with refilling our teas and cleaning up empty plates. What's great is they have employees who speak very clear English and do not discriminate that you are not Korean. Sometimes, in very Korean places, service could vary.

Lastly, the opening hours for this place is awesome. Open early and closes late. Good for getting back after the sunrises or for a late night snack.

All in all, I would not hesitate to come back. Prices are ok, service is good, food is goooooood and they also have parking in the back for those coming from out of the area!

  4. The Story: This is my second time visiting and I'll admit the reason I came back because I forgot the yelp the establishment. haha…

    Food:
My friend Amy R. and I ordered pork belly and galbi. I didn't care much for the pork belly but the Galbi was melt in your mouth. They have ample amount of banchan served with cold barley tea.

We also ordered dumplings (mandu) – very crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Perfection.

The food is cooked over charcoal – only place I've been to that does that. It does indeed add an extra layer of flavor onto the meat.

Price: We spent $50 each (with tip) for 2 BBQ dishes and 1 order of mandu.

Service: It was good. My problem was more with the valet than the wait staff.

Parking & Finding the Place: There is valet parking behind the restaurant but beware! the guy demands tip! I'm usually a tipper regardless but saying "tip tip tip" is just rude.

Additional Thoughts/Tips: Would come back for Galbi! But thats about it!

  5. Conflicted.

I like eating Korean bbq, but I sometimes get ''bad'' service that makes boycott it for months!!  The north jersey Korean food scene is strong so of course this place would be jumping.

We got lucky and scored a table for 8. A few minutes late would've resulted in a long wait. This is charcoal bbq which I think is more ''authentic'' to Asia. I felt the ventilation system was lacking despite every table having a vent.

We ordered 4 meats, jap chae, sashimi rice bowl, himachi roll, seafood pancake, some pork belly dish, soju, beer. The waitress at first insisted we ''didn't order enough'' food. I really don't understand this policy–it happened to me at another Korean BBQ spot. I feel like they want you to order meat according to your party size. [In my case, they wanted us to order 8 meats ''1 per person'']. The price for meats were on the higher side. I will say the kalbi was pretty good. But the bulgolgi was not that good.

The jap chae was a bit wet and sweet. The pancake was good. The himachi roll was below average, as the sushi rice was dry/hard. The sashimi rice bowl was decent, served with regular rice, not sushi rice.

The service was attentive but felt super rushed. I understand that they wanna cook all our meat before the coal runs out–which makes for an unenjoyable dining experience. But for almost $300  dinner, I'd like more than an hour to dine. The service was very efficient… Food delivered in a timely manner, refills, napkins etc. One issue i had was the waitress used one set of tongs for ''all'' her tables–for both raw and cooked. I usually don't care but I'd prefer you serve the cooked meat then touch the raw, she did it reverse… I was able to grab the meat before she served me. There was also the issue of removing the cooked meat off the grill… She placed them in a banchan dish that has sauce. At least put it on an empty dish.

The banchan sides were ok missing only a few of the usual suspects. I did think the food overall was good, but definitely not an enjoyable dining experience BC I felt so rushed… Maybe lunch is different or when they aren't busy. I honestly feel conflicted.

  6. This is my go to place for Korean bbq in Palisades. I love that they have a lot of side dishes, some are quite fancy such as fish kimchi or squid kimchi. Their seafood pancake is very good even though it's a bit oily, I would recommend this for a group of at least 4 people, otherwise your main dish will be ruined as the pancake is very large.

Their meat for bbq is very fresh and cooked to perfection, however, the portion is tiny… We often pay around $35 per person and I never feel completely full. Maybe I eat too much, who knows…

  7. This place is widely considered to have the best KBBQ in the area but it's really just above average. The quality of the kalbi meat is good but not great, and the service can be hit or miss. It's very busy on most nights and it gets pretty chaotic with the staff running around. If you're looking for a nice relaxing meal, then this is definitely not the place for you. But if you're looking for good beef BBQ (skip the pork BBQ, there are better options for that) and don't mind a little smoke, noise, and a bustling crowd, then give this place a shot.

  8. My friends and I decided to take a day trip up to North Jersey.  Spent some time at King Sauna and then headed over to So Moon Nan Jip for dinner.  We got seated right away.  I'm not sure we expected much but food and service were so good.  We ordered grilled kalbi and jigae.  We left very happy.
