I haven't tasted anything from here that I didn't like. I love the fact that they offer Chinese food and Japanese food. The food always taste fresh and seasoned quite good. I usually order take out but since I was in the area I stopped in. The staff is nice and they offer you candy while you wait.
This place has the worst Chinese food in all of Astoria. I ordered shrimp dumplings, lo mein, and their house soup. Things that are hard to mess up. The shrimp dumplings had no shrimp in them, just this weird filler meat, and they were so doughy that chewing on them actually hurt after a while. The lo mein was soggily drowning in sauce, and the meat in the house soup was as tough as beef jerky. Go somewhere else.
I've lived an avenue away for 2 and a half years, yet somehow I've never eaten here. I'm not upset that I did. Not bad!
I ordered a spring roll and a pint of veggie chow fun. Total: $5.60. The spring roll was pretty standard, and a little less greasy than usual, which I valued. The chow fun was alright, but had too many water chestnuts and not enough other veggies for my liking. I also would have appreciated a larger portion – I'm used to other nearby places giving out at least two meals worth of food.
All in all, I'm full and thought this was sufficiently tasty. I'm so curious to try their sushi…maybe next time.
Two stars is definitely low in my books since I'm usually pretty generous with the whole star thing, but man …
OK let's start with the good stuff. The Chinese food was definitely very typically Americanized-Chinese. It's not authentic Chinese like how ma makes it. But definitely worth the few bucks you pay. Laden with msg. Took my buddy here (he's non-asian and not from around town) and he loved it. Fair enough, I give you that.
For some unknown reason on a Sunday morning, I craved sushi and since I lack counterparts in the neighbourhood, I ventured here by myself and …. hm. It was officially the worst sushi I've ever had in my life. And I come from Vancouver, where the city is PACKED with budget sushi joints. Like, over 300 sushi places. Some awesome, some ghetto. So, I KNOW bad sushi. And it was SO bad, I couldn't even eat it. That bad. Because I always, always, eat EVERYTHING.
OK. I think I've ripped them apart enough here. They were nice people even though the place was a dump. Good fake-chinese, stay away from sushi.
It's clear that they peppered my 'hood with their menu this past weekend – it was on nearly every apartment building door – and it definitely struck me… as I was returning from a weekend away, the thought of Chinese was PERFECT. So, my husband and I decided to give it a whirl – however, the last time we ordered chinese in Astoria (a year or so ago) it was downright horrific. We were very much afraid, but prepared to order the pizza as backup if this went terribly wrong.
King Garden – you pleasantly surprised us. The food was pretty quick in terms of delivery, the delivery guy was super-friendly (even though he treked up 5 flights of stairs to bring it to us)…. and the food was downright delicious. Freshly prepared, very tasty and yes, well-cooked brown rice was a pleasant surprise. I think the previous reviewer noted they actually have PORK chunks in their pork-fried rice. Whoa! What a concept.
We loved the crab rangoons, steamed dumplings (with nice thin shells instead of those thick, doughy exteriors). Steamed shrimp & broccoli was also rather tasty and my hubby ate every last bite of the General Tso's. We'll re-order. Thanks so much for heading our way for your "marketing" 🙂 Even with a chinese place practically next-door, we're going to stick with King Garden.
This is based on ordering off their sushi menu:
Spicy tuna roll which is a staple for me was lackluster and mushy
Boston roll didn't fare any better
Shumai – another fave was decent, may order that again
HOWEVER, their specialty rolls are delicious. So far I've tried…
Spicy girl roll – spicy salmon, tuna, yellowtail, avocado and crunch inside and tobiko on top
Godzilla roll – spicy tuna and crunch inside, tobiko and avocado on top
Can a girl get some spice in her life?!
What restaurant serves up Chinese food and Japanese food? Well, this place does! I've never visited the restaurant in person but I've only ordered take out from this joint. The lady on the phone is always in a hurry to get me off the line as soon as I'm done ordering and I've ordered off both menus. I always feel weird ordering the sushi from this place, but I can't say I've ever gotten sick from the joint. The Chinese food is your typical americanized version and it's definitely like every other joint you see on the corner. I will say the Chinese food is a little step up above the average restaurant but certainly not what you would see at Flushing at more authentic restaurants catering to Chinese people. Stick to your typical items (American stuff) and you should be good to go. The deliveries are freaky fast and I've been able to get my food in under 15 minutes before. Prices are good and the portions are large, this is my Chinese and cheap sushi joint of choice in Astoria.
