So Gong Dong

“I must say, that compared to So Kong Dong in Fort Lee, the tofu soup is a lot more flavorful here.”

“I have the same taste buds as Saeyoung B. As I also think the spicy pickled cucumbers are the best in town bar none!”

“Yes BCD has more variety, side dishes and serve alcohol BUT their soondooboo does not taste like it's their specialty.”

  1. Rhetorical Q&A time.  Yay!

Did you have too much to drink last night?

    Are you feeling it today?

Want to get back to feeling like yourself asap?

Well, boys and girls, I have your elixir.  No better hangover cure than a hot bowl of kimchi sundubu, white rice, and some pickled banchan.  If you have not sweated out the alcohol by the time you finish your meal here, I can't help you.

(CAN SOMEONE PLEASE STANDARDIZE THE SPELLING FOR SUNDUBU and DDUKPOKI)  I've seen every romanized spelling variation known to man.

  2. I LOVE this place. Tastiest sundubu ever, and a full platter of perfectly grilled galbi for $16? Get outta town.

I always get the bulgogi sundubu, most spicy level with a platter of galbi. This ALWAYS hits the spot, especially on a cold winter night. And they give you rice in a proper stone bowl, so at the end you can have the crispy rice that forms along the sides – MMMMMM! Also, the servers don't try to be all overly attentive. They just ask for your order and bring you the food – which I like. Sometimes you just need to cut the bs and chow down, you know?

  3. Soondubu here really hits the spot – it's a good place to come after sweating for a whole day at King Sauna (5-10mins walking).

Nothing else much to say except very reasonable prices and many options to choose from.

Okay TBH, the reason why I love this place is cause they're so good at refilling their ban chan. I ask for at least like 3 rounds of their cucumber kimchi cause it's that good. It's so sad not a lot of places these days have cucumber kimchi anymore!

  4. My favorite place in New Jersey to grab the best soondubu! Whenever I'm in the neighborhood, I have stop by. It's perfect for winter time, but I've had it in the summer too. They gives you tons of side dishes and the rice comes in a hot stone bowl. It's awesome.

I like to order the kimchi or mushroom second level of spiciness. Don't forget to add in the egg in the beginning so it cooks while it's still bubbling and you can add hot water to your rice after you're done to make a yummy porridge!

  5. I really do love tofu soup especially on a chilly day. The tofu comes on a hot sizzling plate so be careful not to burn yourself! They give you free appetizers before your orders are served, such as pickled cucumbers, and sprouts. The wait on the food isn't too long honestly, its usually served to to you within ten minutes. For every bowl you get a bowl of rice as well. The soup serves one and costs $10. They even have dumplings that serves 10 pieces, and Korean BBQ. The BBQ is average and a little overpriced for what it. So if you do come to this place i recommend sticking with their soups because its both traditional and tasty. The location is a bit hard to find but its upstairs on the right side. You'll see a room with full wood, and Korean lettering wallpaper, then you'll know your at the spot!

  6. so gong dong is one place i must eat at whenever I'm in nj. it's probably because I love MSG. the soondubu always come out boiling. it's perfect for a cold winter day and perfect on a cool (or hot) summer night. it's the perfect meal to cry with your friend about a break up and/or to share great news.

they use soft soondubu which i love. I've had several different types and nothing has disappointed me yet (I like to switch it up). I wouldn't recommend "spicy" or "very spicy" because it just tastes like red pepper flakes. I find "a little spicy" to be just the right blend of spice and flavor.

make sure you scoop out the rice and let a layer of rice sit in the bowl so it crisps up a little bit. they'll add hot water and it'll be the perfect end to your perfect meal!

their service used to suck but it looks like there was a lot of new staff (younger) who were friendly and accommodating. even the familiar faces were a lot more friendly than they used to be. great move, sogongdong!

  7. Soondoobu is definitely a staple here. Cheap and delicious, I always come back for it.
The bibimbap is alright, not the best but not the worst.
The service can be pretty rough… But some days are better than others

  8. The Story: Stopped there for lunch this past Saturday. I am in love with this place.

Food: Prices are very good and their kalbi isn't super expensive like the Tofu House in Fort Lee ($5 difference). The soup is very flavorful and great assortment of banchan. I also liked how they have a personalized stone pot for each patron.

Price: Very fair. Each tofu soup is $10 and the Kalbi was $16

Decor:  Fair dining room. Lots of seating but I don't feel cramped like in Tofu House.

Service: Service is your average Asian service. They are nice but aren't very attentive but I guess thats what the button on the table is for. My only complaint is that they forgot our kalbi for the first half of the meal :/

Parking & Finding the Place: Located on broad ave in pal park on the second floor of a little business complex. Can be difficult to find (just gotta look up!) and they make street parking extremely easy with paid parking using your credit/debit cards. (who carries quarters these days anyway?)

Additional Thoughts: I think I found my new tofu soup place!
