Now who does not like a Korean restaurant that is open 24 hours 7 days a week? I know I do! This is the reason why I am such a fan of this place.
Came here quite a few times over the last couple of years after big nights out on the town. Always did the job and satisfied my Calbi cravings.
Overall it's an energetic place, no matter what hour it is. Serves beer and liquor and is also clean. Service is decent, not the best not the worst.
Last night was the first time in awhile that I stopped by this place with a friend.
In my opinion the quality of the food has went downhill over the years. We wanted to order dumplings and were disappointed in the fact that they did not have any more available. Whomp Whomp. On the table we were presented mini apps to start such as kimchi, that white stringy cabbage stuff (don't know the actual name), lettuce and bean paste. The lettuce was a yellowish color and was not exactly as fresh as it could have been. For dinner, we ordered the Calbi. They cooked it themselves. The seasoning was good, however, the dish itself consisted of a lot of bones and the portion was small.
The rice was also pretty dry and they also could have been more attentive with my water refills.
For the price you pay there are other places in the area that will present bigger portions, fresher food and more mini apps. However, like I stated above there are not many places like this that is open 24/7.
This place is an easy 'goto place' for anyone craving Beef bone soup aka 'Sul nong tang' . Reliable and consistent in taste, opens 24 hrs and has a valet service.
It's nice that they open 24/7, but I wish they have more appetizers and small bites items on the menu. I'm not a fan of heavy eating at night, looking for more snacks rather than actual meal.
We were a party of 2, and we shared the bossam deluxe. The oyster was okay, but the pork? Eh, not so. I've had better, and I think it kinda upset my stomach the next day.
Food: 4.5
Service: 3/5
Cleanliness: 3.5/5
Price: 3.5/5
For the last couple of years, I've visited New York quite regularly with my husband. Every time we go, we can't stop but to indulge ourselves in authentic Korean food, which is something you can't easily have in Montreal.
Though there is a fairly authentic Koreatown right in the heart of Manhattan, hubby and I like to roam around and try new places especially on our drive to and from Montreal. We stopped by Fort Lee, NJ one time and tried Gam Mee Ok which seemed quite famous for their house kimchi and oxtail soup. Both foods are very central in Korean cuisine, and if you can cook either of them well, you're bound to be able to cook anything in Korean cuisine!
We actually didn't order the ultimate oxtail soup because there were other foods on the menu that was too good to pass up. One was the seasoned knee cartilage which sounds quite weird and perhaps disgusting to some but tastes rather delicious when you get over the first impressions. The texture isn't for everyone – the cartilage is kind of like hard jelly; when seasoned with Korean gochujang (pepper paste) and condiments such as sesame oil, it really comes to life when you eat it with other vegetables. The cartilage, believe it or not, is full of collagen and other proteins so many Koreans eat it for nutrition.
At Gam Mee Ok, we were also given some fresh lettuce to eat with the seasoned cartilage like a lettuce wrap (ssam). Overall, we were satisfied with the food and would probably order it again if we visited Gam Mee Ok. Also recommended if you're a fan of cartilage or adventurous foods. It wasn't totally spicy on our Korean palates but it may be spicy for you.
We also ordered soon-dae-gook to share between the two of us. Soon-dae is the Korean version of a blood sausage. Also known as morcilla in European cultures, the soon-dae is quite a common food in Korea and eaten in soup, steamed, grilled, you name it. It is not every day that we get to eat soon-dae soup (gook in Korean) so we went ahead and ordered it and was satisfied once again! With the fresh house kimchi that the restaurant serves, anyone who likes authentic Korean food will know that what they're having is real Korean food.
Though our visit to Gam Mee Ok was short, it was still a sweet experience as we were able to enjoy authentic Korean food like we would back home in Seoul. I liked the restaurant because it specialized in Korean cuisine that many might not be accustomed to (like cartilage haha) and is quite different from your well known Bibimbap and Korean BBQ. If we lived in New Jersey, we would probably visit more often!
The restaurant is open 24 hours, so whether you're looking for a place to cure your hangover or just some authentic Korean food, this is a restaurant that you might want to try out. Don't worry, they have your usual bibimbap and other hot stone rice menus too :).
This place USED to be the shit. now.. it fell off.
the main dish they are known for here is suhlongtang. The broth is very watered down now. the kimchi quality also fell off. The service is bad…
I really don't recommend you coming here. There are much better places were suhlongtang! like tang maru (they have awesome kimchi — similar taste to Gam Mee Ok's in it's heyday)
Bossam– the cabbage is old and browning, the kimchi that comes with it is not even the traditional kimchi you are supposed to eat with it, and the pork belly is sliced super thin and only give you a couple pieces.
Galbi– is overly sweet and too much corn syrup. It doesn't have that traditional Korean taste to it.
Only time I reason why I would come is because its the only 24 hour Korean spot around this area.
Second time visiting this place on a Sunday. First time I was here, I tried Seol Leong Tang which I thought was decent- but I wasn't surprised. Tasted just as I expected. Kimchi, however, was pretty good.
I checked in today a little after 9 still a bit hungover, and ordered Hae Mul PaJeon and Soon Dae Gook. PaJeon was good but the base for Soon Dae Gook was very bland and didn't have any strong flavor in a broth like some other places (Byung Chun Soon Dae for example)- which I don't mind. I think it deserves 3.5 stars.
As for Kimchi, it was decent as well. I would give 3.5 stars but if I had to pick between 3 and 4, it would be 3. Still a decent place to go if you're not sure about what to get in the early mornings.
This place is a solid 24 hr eatery in Fort Lee, the clientele is mostly Korean, but I went with some Korean friends. The ambiance is very straight forward and the service was quick and efficient.
The food:
Seolleong Tang Deluxe- White Ox-bone stock soup with beef brisket, tongue, tendon and tripe. I thought this was great, I really enjoyed the flavor and it would have been even better in the Winter time. First things first, I tried the dish as is since that is how I taste everything, but with this dish and a lot of Korean dishes, you have to make adjustments before hand. Before eating, the addition of the table side salt and scallions is imperative, it makes all the difference in the world. After the adjustments, the broth has a nice milky and beefy essence with a ton of tendon and nice cuts of brisket.
Wang Jokbal- Sliced steam-softened pettitoes with a side of special house sauce. In English, it's pork feet, the pork is nice and tender with a nice gelatinous texture, the flavor of the pork is on the mild side but the addition of the special house sauce adds a lot of depth of flavor. I thought this was good, but I wish the pork had more flavor.
Soondae Guk- Korean blood sausage in white ox-bone and pig bone broth with pork stomach, heart, and beef tongue. I thought the broth was great but I wasn't really sold on the other items. I love soondae but the one here was just OK and they were kinda skimpy with the amount. The pork stomach, heart and beef tongue didn't have much flavor even after the red paste addition or the dip in the salty dried shrimp sauce. I thought the three items just tasted like boiled, unseasoned pork and I was just OK.
My grand ma was feeling under the weather and was craving soup so my girlfriend and I brought her to the restaurant. It's in a very convenient location with a parking lot and a lot of space. We were seated as soon as we walked in and we already knew what we wanted so we ordered right away as well.
We ordered sol lung tang, which also came out very quickly, and ordered rice. I haven't had the dish in a very long time and I personally thought it was great. Next time I'm craving soup, I will make my way over to this restaurant.
One thing about the restaurant, if you are expecting a lot of ban chan, you will be disappointed.
