Venturing to Fort Lee and environs for some authentic eats is super fun and yet a little bit nerve wracking. What the hell am I ordering? Is this gonna be good? Is that thing alive? A group of us ended up at Masil House post hike and although it was a solid spot, I've had better and I know better is out there.
First, the array of free kimchi was delicious. Plenty of variety, we enjoyed. The shumai may have been some of the best shumai ever and the dumplings were a hard shell vs soft that I rather enjoyed. The seafood pancake was the size of a medium pizza, just as greasy as one and just about as delicious. I'd eat it again, not gonna lie.
The menu is vast and a little hard to read as someone a bit foreign to this fare as well as area. We did our best. The bulgogi dish was delicious, but I think for the price could have used some more meat. The spicy squid dish wasn't my cup of tea. I'd like to add that it was more a heaping plate of onions with some octopi rather than vice versa. The bim bim bap was fresh and good but lacked meat (there was a small amount of ground up meat on the bottom). Overall, it was good, but I've had better.
The place is a whole in the wall. I definitely need to check out more spots and reassess, but for right now Masil House is getting the 3 star review.
Bonus: Free parking in the rear
Bonus: They have an eel tank that may be one of the grossest things ever.
Bonus: Their idea of water is very strong iced tea. You gotta buy a water bottle to get the real stuff.
This is a gem definitely. I like their authentic korean menu. You can get fresh seafood and also bbq. There is not a cheap place though so be prepared to spend little more. Excellent BBQ menu especially the beef and chopped clam mix.
There is a small bar by the entrance and it is where I normally hang. You can order anything off the normal menu or bar menu. Bar menu is usually a bit lighter and geared towards SOJU drinking.
Owner is friendly and the crowd can be mixed. I've seen from businessman to young couples to anyone who enjoys Korean food.
This is one of the typical Korean restaurants in North Jersey that serves Korean bbq with other already-cooked dishes. We ordered pork belly for two, and the quality of meat was ok. This should be one of the Korean places you can try, but not necessarily 'the' place to go.
My main gripe was that the service was a bit inconsistent. One of the waitresses was friendly, the other a bit standoffish towards me (the token non Korean) but friendly to everyone else at the table. The other waitress was sweet to everyone.
The food too varied a lot in quality. Raw oysters recommended by the waitress was a bit fishy and not very fresh. I've had tastier and cheaper elsewhere including at Ichi Umi.
The best dish of our meal was the barbequed live eel.
We ordered the salt seasoned non marinated eel and it came out with a flavorful smoky good taste.
The roast duck was good but a bit overpriced for the portion size. The duck is served in individual boneless chunks like a serving of kalbi. A bit chewy and fatty yet they didn't include my favorite part for a roast duck dish – the skin!
Side dishes were above average and included some very tasty but fried tofu and very fresh veggies.
This is small low key Korean restaurant opens late( until 2am in Friday). Staffs were really nice and kind. We wanted to try something different, ordered Korean intestine stew, fried dumplings and sautéed spicy chicken feet. Intestine stew was moderate spicy and delicious, spicy chicken feet was very very spicy but tasty also. Servers were keep coming back to fill up our empty side dishes, help us to enjoy the meal better. I would go back when I want to eat some low key Korean food at middle of the night with glass of beer or soju( Korean rice wine).
