Another excellent dining addition to East Tremont and the Bronx. I came here a couple months after its debut since it took some time for this hot spot to cool down to grab a weekend reservation.
Say yes to the Chimi Sliders to start and any of their cocktail drinks. The Chimi sliders are a excellent mix of beef, cabbage slaw, sauce on my favorite, tostones. Very tasty but messy to eat! I also shared the Passion Ceviche and Grilled Pork Chop. Each was well prepared, bursting with flavor with picture perfect presentation.
As for drinks, I highly recommend their flavored margaritas and mojitos. Well mixed drinks with the right amount of alcohol and flavoring. Always nice when a restaurant bar hires competent bartenders which can be a rarity in other establishments.
The decor is fun and bright with a focus on my favorite hobby: traveling. There's a couple of travel related decorations on the walls but I feel it's just right and not overbearing. Music is not too loud so you can enjoy conversations with your friends.
Latin Fusion done right and actually worth the hype. I can't wait to visit Travesias again soon.
My girlfriend called me up and wanted to meet for an early supper at Travesias. Upon entry, we were given a very nice table and I'm assuming it's because she's a regular so they hooked us up. The server came to the table quickly and took our orders. They have some decent specials but we went with a bottle of Tempranillo for the table.
We started with the Passion Ceviché, which was very good. The portion was small but it was served in a tiny, cute mini mason jar. I liked the flavor. As we do at most outings together, we ordered a slew of items to share. We had the French Avocados which are basically huge slices of deep-fried avocado and they were crunchy on the outside but creamy inside and flavorful. We also had the Golden Crab which are basically crab wantons. They were ok but the Argentinian Steak Pinchos were tender and wonderful! We also shared an order of the Oxtail Risotto which I would have to say, was an interesting take on risotto. The oxtail meat was tender and full of flavor, as was most everything we had; the risotto was creamy and not too cheesy. I was happy with that selection.
The staff very attentive. We had a great meal and I would definitely make a return visit with hubby and my son.
I cannot even begin to describe the incredible meal I had here. It is safe to say that ordering anything is a five-star experience. Try the sliders, rice balls and Chinese buns. The entrées also excelled. The cowboy steak was huge and perfectly cooked. The chicken curry was a favorite of all. Ox tail risotto was also incredible. Desserts were excellent, especially the coconut cake. Be sure to check in on Yelp to get a free Mojito.
Is it Dominican? Well… Yes and….No
What Travesías is, it's an unusual restaurant in the heart of Throggs Neck. Greeting was prompt and seated quickly. All of the main focal points here, are part of Brian Martínez's many travels, hence the word, Travesías. Interior is small-scale, yet brings out, unique and simple decor. Ceiling recessed lighting, colorfully interchange, worldly images, different time zone clocks, decorate their walls and stacked suitcases, add chic to the ladies restroom.
Menu is comprised of a few Dominican touches, yet enhanced, with an international, fusion twist. Cocktails are strong and our Bangkok Calamari appetizer had both, nice texture and flavor-with a thick sauce that I just wanted to have more of. My sisters and mom's meals were fantastic. My Sizzling Salmon was not short on anything: had nice heat with cherry tomatoes and julienned tri-color peppers; texture and taste and the addition of spicy peppers, were definitely there. I sacrificed my usual chocolate habit and decided on the Cheesecake-Stuffed Churro, that was heavenly sided with a scoop of Oreo Ice Cream and Raspberry Sauce. Damn! Damn! Damn!
Service was tops! And having dined in several Caribbean spots in the past several months and leaving me highly displeased (yes…Puerto Rican, Cuban and even Dominican), I was pleasantly impressed with Travesías. Hands down to a Dominican brother, for bringing forth a creative style in eating—–away from the run-of-the-mill, Dominican Chicharrones de Pollo and Mangú!
Travesias, a new latin fusion restaurant boasting the usual latin flavors but with an extra flavorful twist.
Hostesses greeting was pleasantly perfect. Water glasses were filled promptly, seconds later our server, who unfortunately never divulged her name, made a swift entrance and quickly informed us of
the specials of the day. I chose the ribeye entree, and for my appetizer the arancini; the beau went with the empanadas plus pork chops with yuca fries for his entree. The empanada special, was really special and a surprise of flavors. Each empanada consisted of three different types of fillings representing three islands; Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. Each filling was very meaty consisting of either a minced seafood combo, a shredded pork and a shredded poultry these were accompanied by an avocado type dip as well as a chipotle mayo dip, very good indeed. I would definitely have these again. The Arancini's were also very good, they were so moist and flavorful. They had the texture of a croquetta but they weren't croquetta's, either way they are definitely worth having again.
The pork loin was served with yuca fries, the pork was moist and tender and the yuca fries were so crisp and fluffy yet not greasy, they were really good…a must have. The ribeye steak looked really good, but it was a little too thin and fatty for me. The star of this entree was the loaded baked sweet potato very different and very good. As for dessert, we opted out and vowed we would try again on our next visit.
This is about the 7th or 8th latin restaurant added to the Throgs Neck area within 10 blocks of each other, but happy with Travesias addition to this crowd. Their creative vision is appreciated and I will definitely be back.

Hmm…well this is my second visit here and maybe third time will be the charm! No charm this time around..
Ok I get it. It's Father's Day. You were slammed. I just think it could have been handled differently. The I guess manager lady sat us down in a table outside and should have taken the opportunity to let us know that the wait for service of any kind was going to be delayed far more than what many would be comfortable with. We sat and enjoyed each other's faces for about half an hour before we decided to just have one person go to the bar directly and order a round of drinks as we waited some more for a server to finally appear. Magically, someone came over as soon as we tried doing just that..lol Our server was lovely as can be and took our orders. Our drinks took another 15 minutes to appear, which was fine at this point, but there were many tables who looked pretty upset and impatient. We didn't have children with us that night but if we had, I guess we would've been just as antsy as they were with hungry little ones whining.
Anyhow our drinks came, a pitcher of red sangria (tooooo sweet) a coconut mojito(sister loved it) and my frozen margarita was unfortunately just all juice and so terribly sweet I couldn't finish it. This place isn't the least expensive spot around so it was disappointing. My dad ditched the sangria and went with some whiskey and ginger and all was well.
The food was pretty good. Once our food was starting to come out the place was emptying out. So the rest of the evening was pretty decent. The game was on so the boys were thrilled. I had the French avocado which was alright. The dipping sauce was yummy. Dad had the salmon which he finished happily. Sister had the pinchos and tostones which she enjoyed until her plate was swooped without her noticing and was left with her last piece of plantain in her hand dip-less here kinda funny but she was upset! I did order a different cocktail (tequila sunrise) and I'm still not sure what kind of juice that was in my drink but it wasn't orange. I had dessert (lava cake) and it was just too big for me to finish but it was very tasty.
All in all, I may try again, give a different drink a chance, and maybe have a different experience. With so many other options nearby, it may not be too soon.
This place is small but pretty different and cool. They are really thinking outside the box in this location.
I had the Tamarino Margarita- yummy
My friend had the Matrimonio- Sangria and Margarita mixed together.
My favorite food was the chimichury style tostones
