Excellent bowls of ramen here! To be frank, I am not too fond of the ramen bowls that I had throughout New York City. A delicious bowl of ramen is hard to come by and I found one here!
My party and I enjoyed the Shio Black Ramen here! After placing an order, a nice charred chasu aroma comes out of the kitchen that reached out our noses. It smelled heavenly and our mouths were watering. My eyes were locked in at the first sight of my ramen until the server placed it in front of me – it's ALL mine! Shio Black Ramen comes with thin noodles in a tonkotsu broth with black garlic oil, charred chashu, kikurage mushrooms, scallions, and an egg. I was extremely impressed with the broth – it was packed with flavor and the texture was not thick nor watery at all. Noodles were soft but chewy, perfectly cooked. It was such a great bowl of ramen that I drank every last drop of broth!
I am deeply impressed with the ramen here and I do look forward to come back!
For some great ramen at a casual, low-key joint, I would highly consider this place. I can say it is one of the better casual ramen spots. It was a spontaneous decision to go the first time few years back, but a more recent return was a sure reminder that Ramen-ya does indeed serve a great, authentic bowl of Japanese ramen.
Hopefully when you arrive, there won't be a line. There usually will be depending when you go, but the wait was never a huge issue. It is a tiny restaurant, with seating at a bar and a few tables, but it doesn't feel claustrophobic otherwise. Their selection of ramen is pretty great, but my go to order has been the Spicy Shio Ramen — thin straight noodles in Tonkotsu (pork broth), with chashu pork, kikurage mushrooms, nitamago(seasoned egg), scallions and black garlic oil. As an appetizer, I recommend their Pork Gyoza or Spicy Pork Gyoza. The broth is not too overwhelming in terms of oil/grease. The noodles have a nice texture. Egg is perfectly soft boiled. The chashu is fatty and tender. Overall, I can say this is a very solid bowl for the price point. I would definitely go back and try other ramen flavors, perhaps Shoyu or Miso based (my usual favorite has always been Tonkotsu, which can be on the heavier side compared to Shoyu or Miso).
I highly recommend Ramen-ya for a pleasant and satisfying bowl of ramen, in a casual and no frills space. The location is great, right in the middle of the West Village. Open late too if you need a midnight food fix. I can also state that it is better than or about even with some of the more expensive ramen I have tried.
I came here with my wife for dinner and we really enjoyed both our ramen dishes. We ordered the shio black and shoyu ramens. They are tonkatsu (pork) based broth ramen bowls. They are a good value because there's a good amount of noodles plus the chasu, mushrooms, nori, and seasoned egg. They only differ by the flavoring. The soup is really really good. The noodles have a nice flavor. I can't wait to return again while in the west village!
Got the cold chicken ramen here. It was surprisingly very good. The egg noodles were cooked perfectly and chewy. I liked it more than ippudo and the other popular ones. It is a bit out of the way, but worth a try if in the area.
The chicken was tender and it seemed like they already mixed in whatever marinade was used, so I didn't really need to do any mixing. The little pickled ginger pieces were a nice touch. came with half of a ramen egg.
No line at 1 on a weekday but pretty packed. The place is small. There are a few tables and seats at the bar. service was prompt. I was probably in and out in less than 30 min. It seemed like a lot of people were stopping in from work so I guess their usual service is pretty fast.
Cash only! That was the only inconvenience. I would like to try their black ramen next time. It was waaaay too hot to eat hot soup when I was there, so next time!
Who knew I could make this a REAL TIME LUNCH REVIEW, courtesy of Caviar!
Ordered up:
Tomato Gyoza ($9.00 – minced beef and tomato up in them wraps!)
Musashi Pork Shio Black Ramen (Extra Chashu Pork & Extra Noodles – Sub thick, wavy)
Requested delivery at 3pm. Arrived on the dot!
The Tomato Gyoza definitely needed the nice tomato sauce to complete the flavor profile. The Gyoza without the sauce just tasted of boiled beef. Together, though, very nice.
Lovely deliver presentation of the fixins! Super wonderful fragrant wafted right up when I opened the lid.
The single best chashu pork I've had…hands down! That soft-boiled egg was still a bit gooey when it reached me. PROPS! SUCH FLAVOR!!!!
That broth. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudge!
And perfect wavy noodles.
Might this usurp my long standing spot as my favorite in the city???!! Will need to try in person and fresh from the kitchen to know…but we finally have a contender!
Came here on a friend's recommendation on a day that was warm and humid. The air conditioning in here is seriously lacking. There was slight relief upon stepping into the establishment but only ever so slightly. Once you start eating your ramen, it becomes a major sweat fest 🙁
I got the shio spicy. The soup base was quite tasty though I felt there wasn't nearly enough garlic oil in my soup. Didn't taste the garlic at all. Everything else was good but nothing that makes it any better than other ramen places.
Would probably not come back. There are better ramen options with much better air conditioning. I would like to be able to enjoy my food rather than feel like I'm in a sauna.
My review is really 3.75 stars, not yet a 4, but not really a 3 either. I wanted something low key and quick and this was it. I came pretty late, around 9pm so there wasn't a wait. I saw the clipboard when I came in so I think this place does get packed pretty quickly during prime time. We didn't have to wait for a table, but there were only 2 bar seats left.
The service here is pretty good and the girls working were pretty friendly. This is a pretty no frills ramen joint. You basically order, eat and leave. It's not a place to hang out.
The pork gyozas were on point. The skin was nice and thin and it was pan fried to perfection. I loved the crunch and also loved the juices of the pork inside. These were some pretty good gyoza, but they were on the small side in terms of portion size.
I got the shio black and substituted the thin noodles with thick. The ramen noodles itself was pretty legit – lots of bounciness and springiness. I loved the elasticity. The broth was a bit on the bland side for me. I love a nice thick, rich broth. The broth here was a bit watery and not too much taste. I think they were probably playing it safe. I still ended up drinking most of it though. The charsiu was pretty surprising. It had the bite and texture of pork with a lot of bite, but at the same time, it was still melt in your mouth. How they were able to achieve the two textures was beyond me. The charsiu here is winning. I wish the two pieces I was given was on the bigger side. They were small. My noodle portion was also on the small(er) side as well. If you are not a fan of scallions, tell them to go easy on it. They give a lot and it's hard to scoop out. It's not as much scallions as Totto, but it's still a lot. (Totto overloads your ramen with scallions).
This ramen joint is pretty decent for the area, but it's not my favorite. It is better than Ippudo and Totto in my opinion. I would come here over waiting in line. If you are looking for some amazing ramen, Mu Ramen, Takashi and Zundo Ya are some of my faves so check those out.
I was introduced here by my cousin. She told me this is one of many stores in NYC. We tried their Shio Black with extra pork. It was pretty pricey, but it was decent. The noodles and the broth were adequete, the best part of the ramen were the pork.
