$8 yuengling pitchers for happy hour, you say? Hmmm. Not too shabby.
(They actually ran out)
Drank the pumpkin ale pitcher instead, which paired well with the Army Stew.
You don't know Army Stew, you say? It's a ridiculous fusion mix of spicy kimchi stew, tofu, instant ramen noodles, spam, hot dogs, and cheese. It serves two to four people, while boiling on a propane burner brought to your table. Yes, mind blown.
Until you taste it. The frankenstein-like creation is delicious. Although the instant ramen, hot dogs, cheese, and spam cause flashbacks to all the horrific meals you consumed in college. Hey, don't knock it. You got through school didn't ya?
Anyhow, the decor/ambiance is actually nice for a sports bar. Large flat screen tvs adorn the walls. You can watch sports while eating korean bar food and drinking beer. And the music isn't too loud to have a decent conversation.
One star deducted for the poor parking situation. You can park on the street from 6 pm to midnight. I'm coming back. Especially since baden baden in palpark closed.
Since when did they change their name? Anyway the inside decor and atmosphere were very cool. If you're looking to get away from the Korean community, however, this is not the place to be. In fact, there were a lot of older aged folks who were REALLY loud. If that's not what you want, you won't be too happy. What will make you happy is the order of jippo (Korean fried fish). Very tasty and it came with flavorful peanuts and dry shredded squid. Also, I'm sure this doesn't happen often, but be sure to check the itemized bill; our table was charged an extra dish.
Went for Daily Lunch Special
Food – 5/5. The gochujang samgyupsal was delicious! Its thinly cut for easy chewing and has that deep spicy flavor but not enough to burn your tongue. Scallion salad is refreshing and has a zingy spicy soy dressing. The amount they give you is enormous! The side dishes and rice were good as well.
Service – 4/5. Friendly and courteous! They give more rice free of charge.
Price – 5/5. Everything on their lunch menu is $10 total and look at the amount of food you get! If you're hungry and in the mood for some Korean food, definitely check out Oak Tong!
Parking – Street (Metered)
Small/mid-size Korean restaurant/bar which replaced Dora Dora. Dora Dora wasn't great and Oak Tong is just meh. I know they've been around for a while because I walk my dog around to and from Starbucks (Whiteman Sq) during warmer days. I've also been here once about 4 months ago with a buddy just to grab a quick beer.
The second time, yesterday (Tuesday), we arrived at around 8pm to kill an hour shortly after dinner. We took the last booth in main dining area. There's a tiny bar to your left when you enter, with a number of additional seating in front of the bar. The place is very dim, which was what I was in the mood for. There's a lot of anju/finger-food to accompany your drinks. They have a decent selection of draft beer (I ordered a draft Asahi pint) and they seem to have good happy hour deals as per other reviews and their happy hour deal special menu. They had a LONG list of food but we just got the corn cheese since we already had dinner shortly before coming here. The first bite of the corn cheese was delicious. Second bite was good. Third bite, and I felt sick – it was just either too creamy, too cheesy, or a mixture of both. We barely had 1/7th of the whole corn cheese and left after downing our draft beers.
It's somewhat like an island so there's no separate parking nearby – opt for street metered parking, as ever since Club Metro was added to the center across the street (where Cosmos shopping center is) has made it difficult to get parking closer to New York Wing Factory (or Oak Tong).
There's a button on your table – use it. They won't be coming by to check up on you. The service button is very commonplace in Korean restaurants/bars. Please don't press it once – it's not a darn door bell and it'll give everyone inside seizures with its annoying chiming noise.
The bathrooms were fine – not the cleanest and was friggin cold because it was right next to the entrance.
The owner/manager was concerned that we barely touched our corn cheese and didn't want to take it home, and asked what was wrong with it, to which I responded, truthfully, that it was a bit nauseating.
Finally, this place has become a spot that I can enjoy. I was not a big fan before but I heard they have changed their chef and got a sushi corner also. This was a place to go because I was too lazy to try anything else and right near my apartment. But now it is part of the bar hopping routine. Wing factory to Oak Tong to Beer Spot and finally Pho 32 to close the night.
Sushi corner is where you need to sit and chat with the friendly chef. He makes sure that you are taken care of because he believes in customer service and good vibe. When he makes new menu, then he wants you to try and give him some feedback. So I do as if I'm the most important food critic in town.
Fried chicken traditional style is really good. It is very tender, not dry and simple. It's not your double fried chicken wings but the whole chicken is cooked in korean style. I also like their pork kimchee stew because they put plenty of meat in the soup unlike some other places. Spicy clam stir fry is also very good.
I am impressed with their change and hopefully it will continue this way.
By the way, they have a lunch menu that is all $10. WOW. Yes you can get your sashimi salad, kalbi and miso soup combo and everything for $10.
scallion chicken!!!!!!!!!!! padak!!!!
This review is strictly for Oak tong's lunch specials. Always known this place to be a drinking venue and never imagined that they served lunch. Walked into find out that they only accepts cash but everything on the lunch menu is only $10 – INCLUDING TIP!!
What can you expect for $10 these days? apparently a whole lot at this place.
We ordered the following 1) Pork bbq with small soy bean paste soup, 2) Sashimi Bibim bop (missing pic) 3) Jjam Pong (Spicy seafood soup) with rice and 4) Spicy chicken sauté.
Portions were very generous and quality of the food was not skim either. It was truly a nice surprise in this neck of the town.
Atmosphere was very hectic due to lots of people constantly coming in for lunch.
Noticed that there were many items on the menu which will take me days to try them all. When food came out, one of the dishes too much longer than the others and we had to wait for one person to catch up.
5 Stars for price, 4 stars for food and 3 stars for service.
This establishment really only caters to the local Korean community as their servers hardly speak any English. I randomly popped in here for a quick late night drink and it seemed very popular and the crowd looked like they were having a good time. The food menu looked promising so I decided to give it a go for lunch the following day. The service was awful as I'm not Korean and do not speak the language. We were not asked if we wanted drinks. The plates did not come with the standard rice bowls, and there was not a sufficient amount of napkins. They had no bottled water or diet sodas. At one point, I was obligated to get up and find a server who I found eating with the rest of the staff. I don't think I will be returning to this spot solely because of the lack of basic customer service. However, the kimchi soup, sushi and eel katsu I had were relatively good.
