  1. The clientele they are catering to is not Asian, they are catering to Caucasian Long Islanders and the food shows. I would say this place would be a nice starter Korean place or a good place for non Asians since the flavors are more mild. Don't get me wrong, it's not that it was a bad meal, but I have had better Korean food else where.

    The food:

Dol Sot Bi Bim Bab- assortment of vegetables, beef, fried egg & special hot bean paste sauce over brown rice with a touch of sesame oil in a hot stone pot. The dish is served with everything in sections and the job of the diner is to combine everything, I always thought of this dish as a rice salad with bean paste. It's good but the flavors could be more Korean. The stone pot does char the bottom of the rice leaving crispy bits which is a nice textural contrast. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

  2. It's great to have this restaurant in the middle of mineola. The sushi is average at best. As for the korean food; they don't give all of the little side dishes (banchan) like most other korean restaurants do (minus 1 star for that). The dolsot bibimbap is good but has less meat in it than anywhere else that I have had it. I will say that it does taste good and the purple rice gets a perfect crispness to it from burning on the side of the bowl. The staff are very robotic most of the time and not super friendly. One issue was being served a can of soda and the top was filthy. On that same occasion we had asked for napkins and we received 1 napkin for a table of 3 people (minus 1 more star for service). Aside from those issues I would still return, there's so few korean restaurants around here and this one is ok.

  3. Considering the area in which I'm working, I'll take anything that closely resembles quality Korean food (feel free to substitute any type of food though). At Jane Cafe, that's exactly what they're serving, albeit under the guise of a Korean/Japanese combo restaurant.

Everyone mentions the dolsot bibimbap, so I tried it for myself on a Thursday afternoon. It was perfectly acceptable – beef was flavorful enough, portion size was filling for lunch, and the accumulated crust at the bottom of my bowl was spot-on. It wasn't eye-popping or transcendant by any means, but that's not reasonable to expect, at least not over in Mineola. At $11.99, it was definitely what I was looking for. They also served us bowls of miso soup, which were nothing special but at least were hot.

It's a pretty limited menu, and I'm not sure I'd go for the Japanese offerings, which are mostly sushi variations, but at least now I know I can rely on Jane Cafe for solid bibimbap when I'm in the mood!

  4. Since I like Korean food, I want to give them 4 stars, but among Korean Restaurants, this place is not so special. The good thing about this restaurant is that you can eat Korean food more casual and relaxing atmospher than authentic Koren place.

I tried Bibim Bap, Ramen, Vegetable Kim Bop, Bulgogi Kim Bop, Jap Chae and Vegetable Dumplings. Ramen and Bibim Bap was so-so. Ramen taste like the one I can buy at Korean supermarket. I liked thier Kim Bap and Jap Chae. They are very tasty. I may be thinking too much, but they are too flavorful. I wonder if they use special seasoning like MSG. I am not sure. (I used to buy marinated meats in Korean supermarket, but I rarely buy them now since I found out they use MSG to season it. Actually marinated meats at Korean market is very good. This place's food taste too good like these marinated meat.)

Vegetable dumpling is made with vegetable(bean sprout, green onion etc.) and tofu. I thought it is interesting that they use tofu in dumpling. Japanese make dumblings("Gyoza" in Japanese), too, but mainly we use pork and green onions, so it was first time for me to eat dumpling with tofu. I thought this is very healthy. I ordered fried dumpling, but if you want to eat more healthy, you can order steemed dumplings, too.

I went here twice. There service is satisfying so far.

  5. I had been to cafe jane in the past and really liked it.
En route to the movies and getting over the flu, i stopped in with a friend. Since i was still sick, i got the chicken ramen soup and she got the bimibap. The soup was great and she enjoyed her food. I would recommend and return.

  6. It always pains me to write bad reviews but…I gotta take on for the team. I'll make it short and simple and to the point.

    1) Miso soup had absolutely zero flavoring. It was essentially water with tofu and green onions.
    2) Like its soup, both the korean and japanese food is a water downed version of the real thing. I suggest they stick to one variety and make it well instead of trying to go with two.
    3) Sushi was cut into triangles. (lolwut?) It wasn't even cut right.
    4) The sashimi rice was a mixture of white rice and purple rice. Again. lolwut. I was picking at a dark rice wondering what the hell it was until I noticed it was purple. The rice was formed into a round ball and fish was put on top, I have seen way too many sushi documentaries to know that what I had was not legitimate.
    5) Eel roll was the best, but it was drowned in sauce I couldn't even tell.
    6) $16 meal (with tip and tax) for ~10 pieces of sushi…not worth it.

My friend was equally not impressed so this is essential a two star review from two customers. Service was average, light years beyond the food.

  7. I am so happy that there is a spot for good Korean in the area!
I can't vouch for their Japanese food because I've only ordered their Korean dishes, and always takeout.  I occasionally get a japchae noodle craving and it tastes as delicious as when I get it from the Korean area in Flushing (where I used to live).

It is near the train station so I just stopped over there after getting off the train from Manhattan before heading home.

I just wish they had a website and, even better would be an online ordering option.

Of course it's not as cheap as Flushing for Korean takeout but it is the only place in the area and good quality as far as Korean goes.

  8. Banchan is not served.  First sign of a problem.  Not good.  Not good at all.  Sloppy service, dingy shop, bad korean food.  I can only call this "american korean food."  Chinese food is not beef with broccoli, is not general tsao's chicken, is not free egg roll with your pork fried rice.  Similarly, korean food is not what is served at Jane Cafe.  But, it is certainly edible and might even be enjoyable and tasty to some, especially if you're looking for "Korean takeout."  So maybe 3 stars for takeout food.  One plus: the owner (I assume) was nice enough to give me some kimchi after I asked if they give banchan, which comes standard at all korean restaurants.
