I came here before for drinks and food with some co-workers, It's a restaurant part of a hotel, the bar/restaurant area is very spacious and has a nice ambiance with cool decorations, they have local beers on tap which is cool, we just had appetizers and it's been a while so I don't remember exactly what I had but it was good, this time I came back for mundo's annual summer party which a friend invited me to, there were free appetizers which waitresses were walking around with, I didn't realize that the space was so big there was a basement area along with the whole first floor which all were occupied with bars among many cool stations, I wish they would hold events here more often
DRINKS ONLY REVIEW!
Not the best place to grab a drink, had the pisco punch and L'al just were not good. Pisco punch is usually foamy from an egg white froth but this was like a pre-made mix, the L'al had a preserved grapefruit taste. The bartender could not even make an old fashioned.
The decor is nice and I haven't tried the food if you're just looking for somewhere to sit with a drink, venture elsewhere.
My friend chose this place for a party. Apparently they have nights where the place is packed and there's tons of music and dancing. However, the night we came here, the place was relatively empty and the music was chill and kind of loungey.
No matter though. With the size of our group, we brought the party! Once the DJ found out we were there for my friend's celebration, he switched up the music to hip hop and salsa, which she loves. The space is really big and roomy and the decor is beautiful. Gorgeous hanging lamps at the bar. I had a Zen cocktail, which was delicious and refreshing and hit the spot. We had a great time hanging out and dancing and were able to properly celebrate my friend.
We've been here twice now since it opened. I think it has a fantastic vibe. It's a little out of the way from the normal Astoria haunts, but it's definitely worth the trip.
The interior space is cozy and beautifully appointed. They have these wonderful jewel-toned gourd lights over the bar and plenty of seating for large or small groups. It's both intimate and romantic, but also a great spot for a group catch up (make reservations though!).
Their drinks menu might be my favorite thing about this place. Nothing is tired, nothing is the same old. They have a great mix of sweet, sour, spicy, and all the liquors (tequila, mezcal, whiskeys, vodka, etc.). All their cocktails are dangerously tasty. And their beer and wine offerings are nothing to shake a finger at either.
Obviously, as everyone says, you need to try the red sonja. It's difficult to explain, but it's basically a red lentil mash formed into a croquette served with lemon and lettuce. That doesn't do it justice. It's surprisingly delicious for something so unpretentious. I think the best way to eat here is to share everything, but they do also offer entree sized portions if you're not into sharing. I think they usually recommend 2-3 little plates per person depending on your appetite.
The standouts in my mind: Portabello salad, yucca fires, turkish meatballs, and the cheese rolls. And whatever the special is that day.
My family held my surprise engagement party here and I loved every second of it. The space was beautiful, we had a small room towards the back of the bar. The waiters and waitresses were amazing, kept our drinks flowing past the original contracted time. The food was out of this world! I had been wanting to come in and try out Mundo but just hadn't got around to it. Minutes after my boyfriend proposed he said we had to go to dinner and all of my friends and family were waiting there! The red sonjas, what can I say? I have been craving them for weeks now. The puro turco (feta cheese fries in a light phyllo were mouthwatering. I can't wait to come back and try more, and some more cocktails!
We had a great time at this restaurant. The food was delicious… I got the white fish with okra and pureed cauliflower. My sister got the lamb with pureed eggplant, and my friend got the salmon and rice.
The cocktails were amazing – our waiter said the first three drinks on the menu were the best ones, so we got the first two drinks -the pachamama and the zen. Our waiter was nice enough to bring samples of both drinks for our entire table to try, which was a nice touch.
The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is that there was a bar mitzvah happening downstairs and we could hear the music blaring. Meanwhile we were also hearing the music from the restaurant. Pretty bad.
Additionally, the waiters' service was a little inconsistent. When we first got there the waiters were very attentive. Throughout the dinner, our dirty plates were left unattended to while the servers stood and chatted on the side … then it seemed like we were being rushed to accommodate other people even though the restaurant was not packed and there were still many seats open when we left.
For example, while there was still food in my friend's plate, they started to take it up, and while there was still some drinks left in my glass the waiter started to take up my cocktail. Not cool.
Mundo is situated in the fairly recently converted paper factory building that also is home to the paper factory hotel. The restaurant offers an odd but cohesive blend of cuisines. However, Mundo primarily markets itself as an Argentinian restaurant. There's an exciting amount of diversity primarily of Turkish and Israeli influence. Highlights are the steak and eggs; french toast; red sonja (a must try); and, Ottoman dumplings.
On my initial two visits a live French jazz band performed; a different band on each visit. Perfect ambiance for a perfect meal. While it may seem as a destination restaurant, please keep in mind there's much to do within a few block walk, including: a 14 screen multiplex; The Museum of the Moving Image; plenty of hip bars and outdoor cafes to people watch; and, much, much, more…
Prices are very reasonable for the high-quality gastronomical experience that is purveyed. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Mundo keeps me returning. I brought the munchkin for brunch and she loved it. Can't wait to return to what I believe is the most underrated restaurant in the entire city. This hidden gem in Long Island City earned the right to be widely known and I'm more than happy to help spread the word.
Check in for a free 'Red Sonja'
To this day I still have no idea what a 'red sonja' is but it wasn't bad. When I asked the waiter what it was I feel like I got the beat around the bushes response, still ate it though. The empanada appetizer was delicious, and quite possibly my favorite. My friends had the steak and I had the chicken. The verdict? My chicken was the most delicious entree at the table. I tried some of their steak and it was a bit dry and lackluster in flavor. I do like how they have a basement to accommodate large crowds for birthday celebrations or any type of celebration. It gives it a more personal feel and keeps the noise to a reasonable level. The convenience of this location is that after dinner you and your group can head a block down to studio square (a beer garden).
