I had been meaning to stop in this place on my way home from work. I finally did today because it was hot out and I was walking home instead of taking the bus. I stopped in for a cup of iced coffee. There were two women at the counter. The older one was on the phone and the younger one helped me with my order. She made my iced coffee promptly. It was refreshing and not too bitter or sweet. Although there are other alternatives available, I thought that the iced coffee was a nice touch to my treck home and it was only $2.50. I also noticed a ton of baked goodies. It took extreme will power not to purchase anything. Maybe next time I won't be able to resist!
Better Colombia baked goods could be found elsewhere. Wasn't impressed and won't come back, especially with prices that aren't so wallet friendly considering the breads weren't anything to run home about.
I'm not one to leave negative reviews, but I've got to be honest. I've been to this venue several times and my experience here has always been disappointing. Here's why:
1) Consistently poor service. I always get charged a different price for the same order. They're stingy with their portions (and forget about extras like hot sauce – you might as well have your own at home).
2) Mediocre food. This is a bakery, but I'm pretty most of the items aren't baked here. The empanadas may be fresh in the morning, but if they're out all day, you're going to get something that's been on display for most likely hours. I've ordered real meals from here twice – once for delivery, once for an eat-in lunch special. The delivery took over an hour and they forgot the chicharron in my bandeja paisa. When I went in to tell them, the owner said that was impossible because she made that order herself. Okay. This is the same lady who, when I went back 2 months later for a lunch special at noon, told me she didn't have anything ready because I was an hour early. When I showed her the time and told her their menu said lunch started at 11, she told me her cook was late and she forgot to change the clock because of Daylight Savings. Alrighty, then. As for the quality of the food, the meat is obviously very cheap (this goes for chicken and red meat) and everything else is just meh.
If you're craving Latin/Colombian food, there are a handful of establishments as you head to west to Queens Blvd. that are way better.
While I understand many people enjoy their local establishments I feel like it is important not to over-embellish these places. For those of you familiar with Queens you will know that there are dozens if not hundreds of Hispanic bakeries throughout the boro; some of those are Colombian and each offer interesting regional flair though the pastries that they offer.
When you walk though the door the orange and tan hues of the store either fill you with energy or weariness depending on your mood and time of day. It is very brightly colored on the inside. There area a couple of tables for you to sit in while you amaze at how clean the establishment seems. While you look around you will also notice that television in the center of the store which seems to be constantly set to the some Spanish channel (not sure which). The people are friendly enough though so you move towards the counter.
Unfortunately for Que Sabor it doesnt seem to know what it should be, as you look through the assortment of menu items; it ranges from canollis to grilled steak to cheese breads. While it would be wonderful if a place could have all these menu items done well; it just isnt possible. This is what has happened as you back away from the counter and realize the horrible mistake that you've made.
Honestly Ive been here a dozen times and there are few things that are worth your time, all of them however are Colombian fare:
1. Beef Empenada – the one whose shell is made of corn (the chicken one isnt worth it)
2. Chicharones – Fried pork skin and fat; pretty goof with hot sauce
3. Guava Cheese Pastry – Unlike many other Colombian places, Que Sabor's cheese and guava pastry is surrounded by a flaky and soft french style bread. Try it if you've had it elsewhere.
Honestly if the location wasn't so convenient I wouldnt come here.
This family run bakery really brightens the corner of Haspel St. and Grand St.
Previously at this corner was an old run down variety store.
The Colombian pastries are pretty good. The mousse pastry is very good.
They also serve lunch which I'll try on another visit.
A Family owned business on a busy corner of Haspel and Grand Avenue. My bf lives around the corner so we would always come here for the beef empanadas.
There are three varieties of the empanadas, Chicken, Beef and a puff pastry chicken as well. The beef patties are $1.50 and the chicken puff ones are $1.25. Really affordable empanadas and you get full after eating two. They also come with hot sauce to bring the empanadas to a whole new level of taste.
There are a variety of pastries that the bakery offers. From chocolate cake, mousse, tarts, cannolis, and even flan. The Flan there is what I want to try the most, and I keep eying, but never got to try.
There were other times where I also came here to try the meals. The Oxtail soup and the crunchy pig skin pork is a must order! Sadly after 2pm, I didn't see any in the cabinet, two days in a row that I went.
