We love coming here for lunch. $8 for either a tostada salad or a soup as a starter and a burrito! It's an amazing deal. Despite it being summer with wretched humidity, I always get the chicken posole. The spicy deep red soup with chunks of delicate shredded chicken and tender posole makes my tastebuds sing! My husband loves his tostada salad that is lovingly heaped with shredded lettuce and cheese.
The burritos are large and these are probably the best and closest to SF's Mission burritos in NYC. We always order with carne asada and pinto beans. I love tasting the blistered char marks on the juicy steak.
Another wonderful aspect of this place is the salsa bar. While salsa bars are ubiquitous in CA, they're rarer in NY. There's a choice of three or four different salsas. My favorite is a red salsa that starts out tasting sweet (not sweet like sugar, but sweet like a vegetable that's been caramelized over long slow heat) and the heat slowly builds up. Pure seduction, I tell ya. The green salsa is also good, but I can't resist the slow tease that the red salsa gives me.
Great Mexican food at a decent price. I loved everything about my steak burrito, I went home feeling satisfied and not bloated like a whale. I can't wait to come back. The only downside is its cash only so make sure you have cash on you.
My motto is usually to not to write a review until I have visited a location at least twice and tried a couple of things. Anyway… I went to this restaurant yesterday evening and there were six people in the place, mind you it was the most packed place on the block though…. I really didn't know that Washington Ave is such a ghost town.
We ordered a sangria and a margarita as we not hungry. The margarita was on the weak side but one can't complain when a drink is $4. The sangria though had a weird flavor to it. It tasted like it had lychee poured in it. Drinking it and the flavor made me so paranoid about not knowing what had been put it or how long the mix had been sitting that I didn't finish the drink….
The deco was casual and those who were eating it seemed to enjoy it.
So final verdict is I will not return for a sangria ever. The margaritas are so affordable and you can buy a pitcher for $12-$15 that it may be worth it. Short story is go for the food not to drink.
Came here for brunch this past Saturday and I would like to announce that i've joined the mob of fans. It was a great experience.
My server, forgive me as I forgot his name (blame it on those tasty mimosas), was very attentive and friendly. I ordered the Steak & eggs dish (Each brunch entree came witha free bloody mary, mimosa, juice or coffee/tea) and a lovely mimosa (the glasses are huge!!!). The steak was to-die-for juicy. It came out a lovely medium-rare and was just perfect. They provide generous portions (although my greedy behind wanted more) . The eggs were lovely too. I got mine scrambled and fluffy (none of that runny stuff).
I also got a fish taco! The taco was very good and they even came with about 3 big pieces. The ingredients were well-balanced and complimented the taco very well. I cant wait to order food and beome a regular:)
I am moving to the neighborhood (and is the reason why i was there on Saturday) and cant wait to make this spot my new go-to! Thanks guys:)
Been here a couple times. They have great burritos and a relaxed vibe if you choose to eat in. They can open up the windows in nice weather for some al fresco dining! Decently close to the CA mexican I miss so much.
The best things about this place is:
-$8 lunch special! This includes your choice of a tostada salad or soup and and entree (burrito, tacos, or quesadilla).
-$15 for a margarita pitcher (gets you about 4-5 glasses) or $4 for a single margarita ALL DAY, EVERYDAY DAY. That's right. You can literally roll up to this place at noon on a Monday (if you so choose) and can get a margarita at a happy hour price. That's a steal!
-Salsa bar with about four different tasty varieties.
This place is CASH ONLY. Don't be me and avoid having to hunt down your bank in the area to pull out cash. For the price, the food is tasty and filling, which makes this place a great option for lunch!
I've heard they have a nice brunch, so that is next up on my list!
Tacos were pretty good – had the butternut squash and the cooked peppers were a little slimy. Beans and tomatoes were very fresh though! Also had chips and guac – chips are very oily and guac could've been a little more fresh. Margaritas were very sweet and not too much kick! I like the variety for vegetarians here.
Solid place that serves up a tastey and hearty plate of nachos. Plus, their margarita pitchers are delicious. I like how it has a casual atmosphere too. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back.
