We made it an office tradition to have the lunch buffet on Christmas Eve. Very affordable with a large variety of chicken curry, tikka masala, tandoori, lamb curry and all the naan you can handle. Plus dessert. I have a mango lassi and you can roll me out.
One thing to be careful of is that they put a bottle of spring water on each table. If you open it, you bought it. Ask for tap water instead.
Pleasantly surprised, my go-to Indian restaurant whether in CT or NY has always been Coromandel but we didn't want to trek to New Rochelle for take-out so we decided to give Rani Mahal a try and will definitely be adding it into the rotation.
The order was ready within 15-20 min of placing it and when we got home everything was hot, fresh, and delicious. Chicken tikka was moist, chicken madras was perfectly spiced and there were plenty of leftovers. Portions were very generous. Let's not forget the garlic naan and lamb samosas that were consumed also – so yummy!
Employees were friendly and I was surprised to see the main entrance is actually on another street (not Mamaorneck Ave, although there is access from there as well) which is good to know because I can't deal with the parking/crowds on Mamaroneck Ave on Fri/Sat nights!
I am going to come right out and say it, outstanding. I love and have eaten at fabulous Indian restaurants all over India and around the world from little mom and pop places to high end modern trend setting places like the Cinnamon Club in London, and in my opinion this quiet, unpretentious little gem tucked away in the back of a busy shopping and dining street is nothing short of a jewel.
To begin with my standards for comparing greatness often evolve around eggplant; melenzane when comparing Italian places, baba ganoush with middle eastern places, moussaka with Greek etc. I can say without a doubt that I do not recall eating a better Baingan Bhurtha (eggplant broiled over charcoal, peeled, mashed and sautéed with chopped onions and maybe lightly spiced) in my life. The Lamb Rogan Josh (cubes of lamb Ina Kashmiri Marsala of paprika, royal cumin, cardamom, clove and onion gravy) had one of the noticeably most perfectly tender lamb textures I've eaten in a long time.
Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu.
BF and I came here on a Wednesday evening. The place was practically empty. The decor was classy and the music was nice light Indian classical music. We were greeted and sat down promptly. Our waiter was professional, but kind of cold and all-business vibe. The menu was super customer-friendly because it actually gave you recommendation of their signature dishes and low-fat options. We got the tandoori chicken, Sabji Lajawaab (fresh mixed vegetables cooked with tomatoes, ginger, and bay leaves), and mango lassi. The cell reception was pretty bad in the restaurant, but luckily they had free wifi so I was able to check in on Yelp. We were served poppadam chips and condiments while we waited for our food. The tandoori chicken was easily the highlight of the meal. It came out on a sizzling platter over a bed of onion, and the chicken were actually nice and juicy! I don't eat Indian food often, but I always find tandoori chicken too dry. Thankfully not here! Apparently, they slow cook the chicken with very low heat overnight, so the chicken stays moist. The Sabji Lajawaab was okay, but it didn't feel as "low fat" as they claimed on the menu. I would go as far as saying the tandoori chicken tasted much lighter than the Sabji Lajawaab. We used a Groupon at checkout, and they were fine with that. If I ever find myself in the area feeling Indian food, Rani Mahal would be one of my top choices.
Not a bad place for Indian food. The staff is friendly. The lunch buffet is a great price on the weekdays. Not too bad on weekends but I understand they got to make they're living. The design on the inside is really nice and I love the paintings and statues they have. I recommend coming to Rani Mahal if you're around Mamaroneck and craving Indian food.
We've been here for the lunch buffet a few times over the years, most recently last week. From Mamaroneck Avenue you can miss the entrance if you're not looking carefully, as they have only a front door leading to a descending staircase; there is a larger entrance at the lower level off the municipal parking lot in the rear (bring coins for the meters in either case!). We find the flavoring on the mild side, and tend to find the dishes both more exciting and definitely more extensive on the weekend (when the buffet is accordingly priced higher!), but when we're in the neighborhood and in the mood for "Indian" cuisine we do stop in.
Went there with my coworker during our lunch break, albeit a little later than "peak buffet hours". Still, the food was fresh and didn't appear to have been just sitting there for hours. From the appetizers to the main dishes to dessert, everything was tasty. Especially pleased that it was not greasy, as some of Indian buffets seem to be. We both left full, pleased with our experience, and in agreement that we'd be back…but only when we're good and hungry.
