This is a long-established West Village spot and I say 4 stars. The Mediterranean cuisine in fairly standard, but the bonus is a spacious and airy restaurant, friendly and relaxed service, and frankly a comfortable oasis in a neighborhood where space is limited and most places are pretty crammed. The prices are a little high for the cuisine, but once again, consider the comfortable space you're enjoying it in and it's pretty fair. In fact, many dishes are big enough to share and the waiters won't make a fuss. A definite four star experience.
It's called Hummus Place, so we came for lunch and and had the hummus platter. Their hummus is on the smooth (as in very well pureed chickpea) side, and for the "platter" four helpings are each given a different topping; it was accompanied by a pair of warm pita. We were of mixed opinions on the house soup (vegetable) and soup of the day (leek and potato), but the falafel (five for $5) were properly crisp on the outside while still moist on the inside. We also tried the veggie patties, which came with a side of (slightly dry) lentil rice, and as they say, are particularly good for vegetarians! It is accompanied by a choice of sauces and we chose their tzatziki, which with its mix of dill and cucumber definitely gave the patties a boost. The house red was fine for the price and service was fast and responsive. The storefront is accessible.
I tried this place last week and was pleasantly surprised! I've thought it was just a quick to go spot or somewhere casual to grab a bite, but it's actually pretty nice inside. It's definitely not a place where I'd go for date night, or even go for a dinner with a friend, but my friend and I just wanted a quick dinner before getting drinks last week. It's a comfy place where you can go in gym clothes or whatnot. It was pretty empty on a Tuesday night, with only two other tables occupied.
We each had the falafel sandwich, which came with fries. It was really yummy! I don't normally order falafel and never seek it out, but I actually really loved this sandwich. It was also pretty large; I could only eat half and took the rest home. It had falafel, hummus, tahini, and salad inside. The sandwich was $11. I'd be interested to try their vegetables, like the beet salad and cauliflower. They have lots of little vegetable and side options that you can get for $5.50 each, or 3 for $15.
The one negative thing is that the service wasn't great. It wasn't terrible, but the waitress was a bit slow to check on us, bring us the check, etc. This was frustrating because the restaurant was so empty that it shouldn't have a problem!
The Quick: Not overly impressed with the hummus, but like the concept. Lots of small vegetarian plates to share, can get weirdly expensive and not filling. Brunch was better than dinner.
I have nothing but the most positive sentiments for Hummus Place, as it's the kind of vegetarian food that would trick you into forgetting that you're eating vegetarian with it's variety and high quality, fresh ingredients. I could honestly eat here every day and probably not get tired, and I am not a vegetarian (although I do like to go on occasional veggie days for whatever reasons). This location they have is pretty cool, too; interesting blend of characters and personalities enjoying some quality food. What's great about their menu here is you can drop in for a quick bite or have something along the lines of a feast, depending on how you're feeling or if you're with company or not. Their meze (small bites) portion of the menu lets you sample 3 (or more if you'd like) of their many options. In terms of entrees, I very much enjoyed the falafel sandwich; the texture and consistency of the falafel was my personal sweet spot. Their hummus was also fantastic (it had damn well better been in a restaurant named Hummus Place). Shakshuka was among one of the better ones I've tried, with it's punch-packing flavor. They have house wines if that's the route you want to take with your lunch or dinner; adding even more versatility to the kind of experience you're trying to have here.
Found this place for dinner. Ambiance is very casual and music can be a little loud at times. The food however was good, tasty and fresh. Not a lot of options on the menu, which is geared more towards brunch and appetizers rather than entrees. The staff are very friendly and attentive.
Came here for lunch one day when in search for a place to sit down and enjoy some falafel. The restaurant itself is fairly laid back and casual, thus making it a good stop for Mediterranean food if in the area. The food however, I found to be just average.
I had the falafel sandwich was just ok. I'm a huge falafel fan and have had some amazing falafel at various places in the city. I found that this place's version was just ok. Could have been fried a bit more and seasoned better.
The reviews here are great, so it's unfortunate I didn't have the same experience from a food standpoint. But again, I love falafel and really have had some amazing versions, so this place just didn't do it for me.
This place is routinely one of the best places around for a meal.
The portions are always very generous, the food is fresh and well-prepared, its never too crowded, and the prices are right.
I tend to get the option that lets me get three different toppings, and some pita for dipping.
Ask for some extra pita, as what they give you probably won't be enough.
They also have wine and beer, and if you're lucky you can sit outside and watch the world go by as you snark at people going into the not-nearly-as-good other area restaurants. Make this your West Village go-to.
