Yikes. On the coldest day of Valentine's day at like 0 degrees, we walk into Mogu to get some lunch. The restaurant was freezing and the heater wasn't on! The staff was even wearing sweaters and knit hats. Sadly, the freezing restaurant really affected the performance of the food. Let's start off with the miso soup..
Miso Soup – tasted like chicken stock soup with a bit of miso in it. It came out lukewarm too.
Sushi Entree – $11.99 for 5 nigiri sushi & 1 regular roll
– the first bite was mediocre, but then because of how cold the restaurant was, the rest of the bites tasted bad because the rice got too hard
– the slices of sashimi on the nigiri sushi was very thin and flavorless, wasn't too fresh
– the regular rolls used only a small amount of sashimi
Osaka Duck Roll – $9.99, interesting asian fusion concept and idea but it was drenched in sauce that was too bold in flavors. it's a chinese flavored dish.
Overall, it was a bland experience. And some advice: turn the heat on! It was freezing!
Mogu Sushi is the place to get quality sushi in Flushing without damaging your wallet. Its location isn't prime, so you wouldn't know about Mogu without Yelp or from friends, thus making it a hidden Flushing gem!
Being a huge spicy tuna fan, I love their sushi sandwich roll, which is spicy tuna, spicy salmon, eel, avocado, and crunch with red tobiko and eel sauce on the outside. Simply delicious and different from your standard spicy tuna roll as it literally is a sandwich, so it's visually appealing as well. Mogu also offers various party platters that can easily feed 2/3. For $45, you can get twenty pieces of sushi, an eight piece eel roll, an eight piece spicy roll and eight piece California roll in the small sushi party – how could you resist ?!
The venue is VERY tiny, so it's more of a take out place, but if you're to dine inside, do not come with a party of over 4.
This is the perfect example of why you should read recent reviews before eating at a restaurant. I was drawn to this place because there were over 200 reviews with 4 star rating. To start off, I ordered 3 rolls. The waiter then came back and said we are out of fish for this particular roll can you order a different one. I did. He then came over AGAIN and said we are out of that fish as well can you order another. I replied with, "well what can I order?". His response was anything with salmon, shrimp, crab and maybe tuna. It may seem like a lot but many of their rolls had different kinds of fish in it. I finally picked one and it was available.
The sushi finally came out 30 minutes later…we were the only two in the restaurant. And it was not good at all. The fish didn't seem fresh. One roll was supposed to have mango in it and they replaced it with something else. We asked what it was and they said it was, "something he got from the fridge." The rolls seemed to have a lot of rice and not like previous pictures posted. In my opinion, it was not worth $50 and left highly disappointed.
Accidentally found this place on yelp, and couldn't help myself but try it out after seeing so many good reviews. When I walked in I was greeted very politely and was handed the menu with some water.
Looking at the menu, the prices they offer here are great! I ordered the Sashimi combo deluxe which came with a bowl of miso soup. The soup was your average miso soup. Nothing special, just what you would expect.
A few minutes later, the sashimi came in great presentation!! When I first ordered I was a little skeptical the sashimi was going to be quite small due to the affordable price. I was so glad I was wrong. The sashimi pieces were cut perfectly, tasted very fresh and in perfect size!!
TL;DR
-Clean location
-Fresh Sashimi
-Affordable prices for sushi
I will definitely be coming back. Solo and with friends!
I went to Mogu for the first time a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night. It was about 10:15PM and we were the last customers to come in before their 11PM closing time. We had no trouble finding a seat, but since Mogu is a tiny space (I counted space for 16 at the tables when you enter, and then there are more spots at the bar in the back), I wonder if it is harder to get seated during prime hours.
Be aware – Mogu is very brightly lit. Like, operating table-bright. So if you are bringing a butterface or Strobelite Honey (yes, I referenced that. And yes, I know I'm dating myself by saying so!), you may lose your appetite. So leave your ugly friends at home (their home, preferably. Not yours) and get yourself an Osaka Duck Roll.
A19. Osaka Duck Roll.
Get this. Get two. I mean, I could see myself ordering multiples of this and calling it a meal at that. And if you don't get this, a horrible curse will befall you and your loved ones. Or you just might enjoy your meal just a little less. One or the other, I can't remember which.
But overall, I enjoyed everything I had at Mogu, which included:
R17. Sushi Sandwich: Hey, it looks like a sandwich! It comes in four pieces, but each is pretty substantial.
R25. Aegean's Roll: The best part of this is that the waiter and I shared an unspoken bond. Neither of us could seem to pronounce this properly, but neither of us acknowledged the other's shortcomings. (Fist pound)
Spicy Tuna Handroll: This was okay. I always order one when I go to a sushi place for the first time, so why break tradition?
I can't speak to how the current Mogu compares to the way it was under the previous ownership, but our waiter was attentive (maybe it's hard not to be when we are the last ones left, but hey it is what it is) and the food was good. My only knock? My ice water was a little warm and her hot tea was a little cool. Big whoop. The price was right and the food was good, so I can see myself revisiting Mogu in the future.
The first time I ordered from Mogu I had the Aegean roll which was absolutely fantastic. It is a mix of tuna, salmon, tempura and avocado topped with a wasabi mayo sauce wrapped in pink soy paper.
This is the 2nd time I eaten from Mogi Sushi and like the first time, i am very satisfied with what I ordered. The sushi is extremely fresh and the delivery time is fast. I ordered the three roll special and chose eel, salmon avocado and spicy shrimp. My meal also came with a miso soup. Now ive tasted miso soup that taste like water in the past but this soup had the perfect balance of flavor. For $11.50 I must say the combo was well worth it. I have yet to dine in but the first time I visited for take out I noticed that the restaurant was very clean. Considering I live within walking distance this will defintely be one of my sushi go to restaurants. Fyi: parking is absolutely insane around here!! Just walk if you live close by.
I have been here for about 10 times now. This is my go-to sushi place in Flushing. First thing I ask when I sit down is what's the uni today. I have had the live ones (they crack open the shell there) and the frozen ones (which are either California ($7/piece) or Japan (I forgot how much)). They don't always have everything. Either way, they are delicious. They usually serve the uni in a piece of cucumber or something so it's not just a slice in front of you.
These are the things I have tried:
Mogu Pizza – crab meat inside
Baked Clams – they are amazing!!!
Philadelphia roll
Spider Roll
Black Dragon
Aegean's Roll – I loved it.
Kraken Roll
Tempura Shrimp Udon
Unadon
I may have missed a couple of things but this place has been pretty consistent. I am not saying I am satisfied every time I am there but I haven't found a better place in Flushing.
They do omakase. You can name the price (per person) and they will devise a menu.
It's a small restaurant and sometimes it gets crowded. The bar chairs are not exactly comfortable so don't expect to lounge around.
I visited here on a Monday around 4:00pm. This place is tiny.. I counted about 5 tables, all very close together. One disappointment I had was when I ordered the Mogu Pizza, which was clearly labeled as "chef recommended" on the menu. So I decided to give it a try. Our server did not seem to know what it was, and after she talked to the chef.. said they did not have it, without giving any further explanation. So I ordered a few other things on the menu.
Everything I tasted here was great. This was some of the best sushi and sashimi I ever had. So I definitely give an A+ for the food, but I think other things could use some work.
