Casa Mexicana

“There are so many mediocre Mexican restaurants on the UWS, and it's great to have this new addition.”

“This is not Tex-Mex or Southwestern US cuisine, but authentic Mexican, and a very good execution of it.”

“They also have Mariachi on the weekends, this place surely has its head in the game because Mexico is back in the Upper West Side.”

  1. It was HOT when I went in here & not very breezy outside.  Not the best atmosphere for a first date & I get cranky with no A/C on a hot day.  The food was okay though not quite what I would have wanted.  It's a smaller place and getting here was a little sketchy from where I came from but overall, it wasn't the worse place I've been and maybe it's better when it's not so freaking hot outside or at an earlier time of day.  Service was okay but yeah, I don't like lack of A/C on a stuffy, humid day like this one was.  At least my date & I were in good spirits and got along okay.

  2. A pretty decent place for mexican food. I wouldn't say I was blown away by the meal but it definitely was good.

I had chicken fajitas. The chicken was a bit thick but was seasoned well with a delicious sauce, some veggies, onions, and a side of mexican crema. The dish also came with rice and beans but they weren't tasty at all!

They offer many mexican desserts including my personal fav; tres leche cake. Their tres leche was on point!

  3. Pretty good mexican food in the UWS. Tried dinner there with my boyfriend and we were the only two clients throughout our meal. Tasty guacamole made tableside and sizzling fajitas.

  4. Came here last night with my roommate for some margaritas – it's conveniently located only about a block from our apartment. Our first couple of margaritas were only $5 for their happy hour special, which goes until 7pm. We also embarrassingly went through about four baskets of chips and salsa between the two of us. The salsa is AMAZING. Probably some of the best I've ever had. They don't have outdoor seating which is kind of a bummer, but we sat at the end of the bar right near a large opening to the outside, which was really nice. I've also been here for dinner when they first opened. Their enchiladas are awesome – definitely recommend!

  5. A hidden gem on the upper west side. I came with my roommate on an early spring night in the mood to celebrate warm weather. The happy hour is 5$ margaritas till 7. The bartender was great and attentive, we had delicious chips and a ton of salsa, when the chips ran out he refilled us right away. When the drinks got low, he began to make the next round. They have floor to ceiling windows that they remove on nice days!! Such an amazing happy hour spot. Small, quiet and delicious!!

  6. Casa Mexicana provided a night of deliciousness .I loved my chicken lime (pollo Guerrero) although my rice and beans lacked in flavor. My tres leches dessert was so good. In fact, I used to always say creme brûlée was my favorite dessert, but now I think tres leches cake just became my favorite. Tres leches cake is three milk sponge cake  with : evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. The restaurant itself is cute nothing too fancy just your average Mexican joint. Here's where I knock some points off. I came here on a Saturday night and it was very packed. Only problem was that there was literally one waiter managing every table for the whole restaurant. This poor guy was truly overwhelmed and it was very transparent. He barely came to our table. Our waiter was very nice though. But getting our dessert and the bill took like five years to get. Why on earth would a restaurant have one waiter on a Saturday night is beyond me!

  7. Low and behold, another offspring of Mama Mexico. This time, the settlement is on Amsterdam. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed MM during it's peak and there have been numerous offspring that have done well.

    CM, was okay for me.

We asked to be seated outside on purpose because we recognized some of the staff inside and wanted to have an unobstructed experience. Fail. The service was nice, but may be because one of the staff members recognized some from our party. He started sending some food and drinks our way. We had an array of dishes and drinks which were okay, but not spectacular. (I must sound like a total spoiled, ungrateful brat now.)

For Morningside Heights, this place will become a gem. There are only a handful of places near by that serves up to this caliber. For NYC overall, this place is mediocre. (I actually think that the food got all three of us a little sick.) Just my honest two cents.

  8. Nothing to write home about, here. The food is fine (our favorite dish was the guac) although it's pricey. The restaurant is a lot smaller than you'd think, but they still only have one waiter and that poor guy is so overworked! He takes orders, buses tables, gets your drinks- for EVERY table. That said, service is a little slow, but his attitude was awesome and happy considering that he was called every second for another request.

We probably won't be coming back here simply because there are better places in the area/elsewhere.
