Otto’s Tacos

“Coming from Texas, I found these tacos to be flavorful and interesting, and I would recommend them to someone who wants a quick late night bite.”

“The Masa fries are so much better than I thought, but I'd really never consider ordering fries at a taco joint.”

“They're certainly not Manhattan's best (for that, go to Los Tacos No. 1), but at 1 a.m. on a Friday night after a few drinks–you'll be pleased you stumbled in here.”

  1. Otto's Taco
    NY Manhattan West Village
    2pm Sunday February 28th 2016
    Four Stars

I stopped by Otto's Taco for an afternoon snack. I had a chicken taco and Carne Asada Gorgon. The house-made tortilla, moist chicken thigh, with green salsa. The fried tortilla, grilled steak, green salsa was overflowing so much that it had to be eaten with a knife and fork. We ate them in Christopher Park on this beautiful New York afternoon

  2. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED. I follow someone (I won't name drop them) on Instagram and they always post amazing pictures of tacos. And I LOVE a good taco. So whenever I see their frequent posts of Otto's Tacos menu items, I always tell myself that I have to make the trek to West Village to try 'em out myself.

Came here on a slow Friday evening after happy hour and was in desperate need of a good meal. Went with a shrimp taco, carnitas gorgon and got an order of masa fries with my Yelp check-in.

To get down to it, their food looks way better than it tastes. The shrimp taco was a miss. You would think that the onions, cilantro and the sauce could save it but it didn't. The carnitas gorgon had LOADS of carnitas on it. They downed it in sauce. Based on images from other Instagram users, I thought it would be foldable or easy to eat but it wasn't. At all. At some point, I was eating to eat. I wasn't enjoying the meal. Oh, and the masa fries? Good thing those were free because I would be sad if I spent my money on them. They lacked flavor and the only thing that made them decent was the dipping sauce they served with it.

They also don't have a public bathroom! Wtf is that!!!

The next time we are craving tacos, we will take our money to the authentic spots.

  3. I finally tried this place.

Maybe I don't like the thick corn fresh soft taco shell as much as I like the fresh soft flour she'll.  Info like the crisp corn taco shell.

The fillings were alright.  The fish was rather small.  I've had bigger fillings of the same size elsewhere.  I also did not like the shrimp because I have had larger shrimp where I could taste the shrimp.  These were too small – cheap mind.  If they were using small, there is the sweet shrimp that's better tasting.

The horchata was also too sweet.  I would also rather have the fresh ones j get from a Spanish store from Spain.

    Therefore, adios!

That's the problem when you've had better ones.

    Sorry.

  4. This location is not as good as the others.
The pork tacos and guac just isn't as flavorful. You will feel a sodium overload afterward.
Also, the dude taking my order was so rude but this is a chain/fast food so whatever idc. Maybe he was just in a bad mood.
We didn't have to wait too long for our food so that was good and they have indoor and outdoor seating.
All in all, I might eat here again but hopefully not.
    Try the East Village location.

  5. YES. Finally found tacos in New York that I actually like. (Thank you UberEATS!) My only mistake was that I cautiously only ordered one taco: the shrimp one. Omg so much flavor and zest and goodness packed into a few shrimps and one overflowing taco. I can't wait to try other tacos and other items on the menu! I think for a regular-sized meal you probably want to get 3 tacos at least. So excited to order from here again!!!

  6. This is a good, simple, taco joint. Being from California, I've been dying for a good taco spot in the City. While this doesn't quite meet my high expectations for Mexican food (I'm Mexican and from California), it is pretty good.

I tried the carne asada taco which was more like barbaquoa.  And I tried the shrimp taco which was pretty good–but get it without the crema.

I'll definitely be back to try more. Overall a solid B (I'm a former teacher).

  7. It would of been a one star if not for the shrimp in the taco…

The one who took my order was the epitome of bad service! No smile, made me feel like shit just for wondering what you guys have on the menu.

Now to the tacos, for some reason a few  Instagramers that I follow claim that otto's has really great tacos, so I decided to give them a try.

I ordered the carnitas and shrimp tacos with guacamole on the side, after a few minutes my tacos were ready and after the first bite from both tacos I had to throw It in the garbage, including the guacamole. It was probably the worst tacos I had in new York to date.  The tortillas were hard and stale, the ingredients on the tacos were not fresh, bland and just horrible in taste.

still couldn't figure out how a place can mess up guac?

Will not be back, thank you very much.

  8. So I came to try this place after seeing their brussel sprout taco on social media. This place is really small and is a nice addition to a neighborhood where restaurants are all sit down, not quick bites, and very expensive. It is still the west village, so the prices are a bit hefty for tacos. The brussel sprout special taco was $4.50 for one. I got this an chips and guac. The taco was pretty good with an interesting chipotle sauce on it but the brussel sprouts were taken straight from the fryer and put into the taco so they were VERY watery and left a watery mess all over my hands when I was eating them. Over all though, the flavor was pretty good but not super interesting. The guac was very good and the chips were over salted (but were clearly homemade).

Overall, this is a decent place for a quick lunch or dinner but I don't know that I would tell people they HAVE to go here. There is no bathroom in the restaurant, which is an enormous bummer.
