  1. I think I went a week or two after their opening and it seems they still have a few kinks to work out.  I didn't want to rate too harshly as I can definitely see that there is room for potential here.  We started off with red sangrias and guacamole to share.  The sangrias were nothing to write home about, probably more juice than wine but were tasty.  The guacamole was made to order at the side of our table (there is a guacamole lady walking around with a cart) and it tasted fresh but needed a bit of lime.  One friend ordered the beef fajitas which were flavored well.  Another friend ordered a steak dish which turned out to be the best plate of the night.  The steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare, pink inside), not too salty, and came in a generous portion.  If I were to go back I would get that.  I ordered a seasoned pork platter which would have been delicious had it not been doused in salt.  I generally like my food on the saltier side but even for me this was a sodium overload.  Even the cilantro rice it came with was incredibly salty.  The flavors were definitely there but unfortunately it was overshadowed by the immense saltiness.  I would say that service here is very very friendly and prompt but they could stand to wait a bit longer in between checkups.  I think because it's a new establishment they were very eager for feedback (a lot of "how does everything taste?" "is everything ok?") which I completely understand but it was difficult to maintain a steady conversation as we were interrupted by our waitress about 8 or 9 times.  To be fair, I'd rather have an overly attentive server than one who ignores us and is nowhere to be found when we actually do need something.

  2. The only reason why I this place get's 2 stars is for the one bartender/manager who was nice and made delicious margaritas. That's it.

We sat down at the bar, and one of the male bartenders didn't even make eye contact with us, avoided us, and was on a mission to locate his charger to charge his iphone. Great service.
The other bartender, who I believe was a manager of some sort (if not, he was very professional) made our drinks. Delicious.
We ordered the "nachos for two" to start and were planning on buying dinner. The second our nachos came I immediately said "what is this, nacho's for ants?"
The serving was so small, I would've assumed it was a kids plate.

The prices are way too high, the servings are way to low and the nachos, of all things, were bland.

Not going back, wouldn't recommend going.

  3. BLEHHHHH, i really REALLY wanted to like this place, its right around the block from me and who doesn't love mexican cuisine?!

Atmosphere: AWESOME! We went around dusk as the sun was setting on a summer afternoon and I couldn't love it more. They have open outdoor seating with a glass ceiling cover overhead and cute christmas lights and pinatas (!!!!!) dangling over you as you dine. Super cute, super original.

Service: Not so great. Kinda killed our mood for dinner. Our waiter was nice but totally butchered our order and he seemed distracted even when he came over (which was about 15 minutes after we had been seated). If we needed anything, we literally had to flag down someone. Also, they got our order wrong. When I told one of the other servers that I got fajita but ordered an enchilada, they tried to convince me that the fajita was an enchilada…….LOL

Food: Could've been more flavorful. My favorite part is the fresh guac which is made in front of you! Really neat. But other than that, food is pretty bland. The chips are over-fried, enchiladas were bland, and some of the veggies inside were undercooked. Didn't taste authentic at all.

Will I be back? Probably not……well, maybe for the guac! ;D

  4. I'm really bummed this place isn't better. I love me a good Mexican joint and tacos but honestly the food fell a little flat.

I will say this, they have a great selection of tequila and mezcal (obvs) and they appear to make all their margarita's fresh (I have an allergy to sulfites in bottled lime juice and didn't have any problem with my margarita here). Also, if you check in you get a free shot of their pineapple infused tequila (which is a bit warm but if you ask for a glass of ice it is much improved).

We had the empanadas as a starter and that was perhaps the best part of our  meal. They were expertly fried so the dough didn't soak up too much oil, which is always my biggest fear. Several people around us also ordered the guac which they make at your table, so at least you know that's super fresh. And it did look delicious. The spicy sauce/salsa that comes with most of the meals is also on point.

I had the vegetarian fajitas for dinner with corn tortillas. The vegetables were grilled wonderfully but they lacked any and all seasoning. At that point it sort of felt like I could have made them at home. The corn tortillas were soft and pliable though, which is sometimes not always the case.

My husband ordered the tacos, he said they were decent but the serving of pico de gallo that came with them was honestly only a tablespoon, and for three (albeit small) tacos that's not nearly enough. His other complaint was that you couldn't mix and match your tacos (which every always wants to do). You could only order the full serving, which is a bit of a bummer.

I'd say come for the guac and drinks but if you skip the main meal you're not missing too much.

  5. This is a fun addition to the neighborhood. The frozen margaritas and mojitos are strong with a casual environment.

The waitress was very nice and service was great. We started with the fresh Guacamole that is made to order. There is a little wheeled table near the back where a guy would cut the avocados, squeeze the lime juice, and mix in cut cilantro, onions, and tomato. Each in their own stone bowl, it was quite flavorful. Since he made it from scratch, it does take a bit of time and we got it after we received our main courses.

The chorizo fajita came in a sizzling platter, and tortillas, rice and beans on the side to wrap. The chorizo tacos are a platter of 4 authentic small tacos which was also really good. There is sour cream and a chipotle hot sauce on the side that gave it quite a bit of a nice heat.

Overall, I would love to come back again. There isn't anything that is like that on the Ditmars side of Astoria. It's low key and with great food and friendly service, I'm glad it's here to stay.

  6. We came here for lunch on a Saturday and the place had lots of availability. The decor is very interesting with clear windowed garage doors that can open up and will be great for hot summer days. The staff is a bit inexperienced and there was some initial awkwardness over where to sit. They served warm chips and salsa to start and those were pretty tasty. We ordered guacamole and they have a server on a cart make it in front of the table. It was good, but a bit overpriced at $10. The entrees were disappointing though. I ordered a chicken corn quesadilla that was incredibly bland and served with a watery mix of refried beans/rice. I tried some of the steak Huaraches and that was a little bland as well. Overall I think they have a nice  decor and a solid guac game, but the disappointing overpriced entrees  make me think twice about coming back.

  7. Came here with a group of 4 on Mother's day and had made reservations a few days prior. No issues getting a reservation. Two of us had arrived a little early and they were kind enough to seat us, mainly because we had an infant with us. Our table was already ready so there was really no issue being seated.

The floor manager was really nice and accommodating. The other staff members we interacted with were also very pleasant.

We ordered the guacamole for appetizer and for our main dishes, we ordered the shrimp, chorizo, and chicken fajitas, and I ordered the Tampiquena (medium rare).

For the fajitas, I just tried the main ingredient. I didn't bother trying the different types of tortillas. The shrimps were well seasoned, moderate size, but was a little over cooked. However, the dish was flavorful. The chicken was a little dry (my least favorite out of the 3). My favorite was the chorizo. It had the right combination of fat, spice, and seasoning. The vegetables helped complement the dish. Out of the 3, I would recommend the chorizo.

For the Tampiquena, I ordered it medium rare and to my surprise, it was cooked perfectly. It was perfectly seasoned and the rest of the dish balanced it out. The rolled corn tortilla filled with cheese was good but the tortilla was really too thick for the dish. There was a green sauce next to it, I'm assuming some kind of salsa verde. It wasn't as refreshing and lacked some kick to it.  Overall, this dish was my favorite of the night.

As for drinks, I had one of their mojitos and I thought they did a great job with the drink. They didn't skimp out on the ingredients, enough alcohol for me (but I'm sure some people would prefer it to be stronger). It was refreshing. I highly recommend it.

Overall, I liked the place a lot. Not sure why it only got 3 stars. There are some minor details that can be improved upon but I thought their food was fairly spot on. Very flavorful and appropriate portion size. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

  8. Wanted to love so bad…but find myself only liking. Stopped by on a Friday evening hoping for some happy hour specials. They did have half of margaritas so that was yum. We started off with the freshly made guacamole. It is truly a beautiful display. You can customize the heat level, and ask for more or less of whatever it is you like or dislike. After a few rounds of margaritas and guac, we started ordering. My mother opted for the mixed platter fajitas and my friend went with the chicken fajitas. I wanted a salad for my entree so I added shrimp to the 'Spinach Salad' . Completely disappointing serving size! The salad was amazing- but at a total of $20 now, I wanted double of what they gave me! Totally ruined it for me. The ladies said the fajitas were "ok" they were packed with veggies untraditional to the fajitas we are used to (mushrooms and eggplant from what I recall, could have been something else) I would just ask if ordering fajitas to clarify what is really in them. I would come back to try the tortilla soup that looked great and for some more margaritas.
