Black Iris

“One other nice thing about Black Iris – it's BYOB, so you can bring a nice bottle of wine to enjoy with your meal and not spend a lot.”

“There are really only 3 dishes I order: their Chicken Kebab, Chicken Ouzi (a wrapped phillo, stuffed with grilled chicken breast, basmati rice), and their Chicken Gyro.”

“Homemade pita, delicious stuffed grape leaves, ginormous spinach and cheese pies, excellent hummus, lamb pizza…can't really go wrong.”

  1. This place was really good. I brought a Mediterranean noob here and she liked it a lot. There is quite a bit to choose from, even for those of us picky eaters. The Black Iris pizza was declicious! We also split a kebab platter and it was very good and a generous portion to boot. The hummus was very bland to put it mildly but the pita bread that comes with it is amazing. Our service was attentive, yet oddly slow. Maybe because we were both blonde? ha ha

The prices are incredibly reasonable, but unfortunately this is another place in Brooklyn that is cash only : (  but I would come back.

  2. Black Iris exactly delivered what Yelp was promising. Reasonably priced Middle Eastern food in a relaxed setting. I tried the Shish Kebab which comes with rice, hummus, salad, and grilled lamb. My friend ordered Chicken Kebab with the same sides. We were asked how we want the meat to be grilled and were brought fresh bread before the main (excellent Pita bread!). The meat was tasty and the overall portion size was satisfying.

However, from past visits to other Middle Eastern restaurants especially in Europe I missed having a variety of dips and sauces that comes with your bread, and I also experienced a bigger portion of meat.

However, Black Iris is a good place if you have a Kebab craving and I can definitely recommend it.

  3. Black iris is high quality middle eastern food with low prices and excellent customer service, including speedy delivery.

I usually get the falafel sandwich, which is delicious. The chicken pizza is also awesome, as well as the garlic bread.

The food is always fresh, I have no complaints. I order once a week!

  4. I love good middle eastern food, LOVE IT, and Black Iris is good middle eastern food. It's also BYOB and there's a wine store conveniently located directly across the street making it that much better.

Ordered the stuffed grape leaves to start and when given the choice between a small or large I thought why would someone want more than 8? Boy was I wrong, these were by far the best stuffed grape leaves I have ever had the pleasure of eating, perfect texture and combination of flavors – just absolutely incredible – don't make the same mistake I did, get the large.

For our mains we ordered the Lamb Chops and the chicken kabobs both were excellent but I'd def go for the Lamb if you are a fan, they do it right here.

Cash only, so there's that, come prepared!

  5. In search of a good restaurant in Fort Greene, we followed Yelp's suggestion (like used the mobile locate function and picked the highest rated restaurant with more than 100 reviews and ended here.)

Black Iris is a Middle Eastern — more Turkish — restaurant in a neat part of Fort Greene. It's BYOB — it's cool just walk to the middle of the next block to get something to drink much cheaper than if they had it available for you. It's also cash only, which is what it is. Just go to the ATM and take out the money. There's one in the restaurant.

The food is a pretty fresh rendition of Turkish food. We had the Hummus. A little tahini heavy, but that's a minor quibble. Also, I had the Lamb Kebob. The Lamb was great. They provided the same rice that I have determined is a staple of NYC restaurants but no where else other than the Rice-A-Roni corporate cafeteria and a light salad.

It was well-done. No complaints.  Not amazing, but good.

We also had the mint tea. That was actually very good. I'd strongly recommend that. The pita bread they make is exceptional though. They should feature that by itself. It's made there and you should eat a lot of it.

But at night, the ambiance has enough edge to remind you that you are in the City, but not enough to disrupt the meal. Lots of folks walking and riding bikes away.

Last note, on the service, the server was excellent. She was super kind and generous and helped make the dining experience done well.

All in all a decent dining experience that offers decent food.

  6. Fort Greene staple and true comfort food. Casual, very tasty and the bread is always made fresh and right in front of you.

If you dine in it's BYOB.

My favorites: The lentil soup, fresh pita bread, chickpea cold salad, labneh.

4 out of 5 stars because they do not accept credit cards. If they accepted cards, i would be there MUCH more frequently.

  7. Black Iris is an understated little gem – it is delightfully casual (I prefer the back tables for two–  the dining room is dimly let and you can sit adjacent to each other on comfortable cushions), amazingly cheap, and very tasty. What Black Iris lacks in ambiance, it makes up for with dim lights, a few colorful cushions, and excellent food.  Start with the beet salad — true, it's just a plate of amazingly flavorful marinated beets, but I guarantee even if you already love beets, you'll fall in love with them again after a plate of this salad.  And if you're anti-beets, this might just change your mind.  And then have a pitzaa – I prefer the "green" pitza (scallions, leeks, fenugreek, mozzarella), but I can also recommend the amazing dairy free chicken, peppers, parsley, garlic.  Dinner for two (with half a pitzaa worth of leftovers) came to $27.

  8. A decent dinner spot in Fort Greene. The portion sizes of the entrees were generous, and the chicken kebab was cooked perfectly. However, I wasn't very impressed with the falafel as it reminded me of a hush puppy. The service was attentive but slightly awkward, and it was really easy to get a table on a Friday night. Comfortable casual vibe inside.
