Jin Ramen

“I've had pork buns at several restaurants but the pork belly is too fatty, chewy, or salty.”

“Coming from LA myself where it has many choices in ramen, I did not expect to get wowed by a ramen place in Harlem.”

“I almost don't want more people in Manhattan to know about it for fear that it'll become another Totto with 2 hour lines!”

  1. The place is right off the subway station or bus station. We came here on a Sunday evening and it wasn't too busy and you can easily get a seat.

The tonkotsu ramen is great if you don't like spicy. If you want spicy get the spicy tonkotsu or curry ramen. They also have rice dishes.

The tonkotsu broth was a bit bland and not did not have as much flavor. I'm putting this against ippudo which is a very high standard.

I will come back again to try the rice dishes.

  2. We came here for dinner at around 6:30, and was immediately seated upon arrival. The restaurant is conveniently located right by the subway station, so it wasn't difficult to find at all.

The service here was great and they were very attentive. We had ordered the shio ramen, the chashu don, and the karaage (fried chicken). They were all not bad. The ramen was good, but it wasn't very flavorful. And of course, can never forget the dessert, we had ordered the green tea and red bean ice cream (2 scoops- you can mix and match) which was very delicious!!

Overall, it's a decent ramen shop if you're around the area and don't want to travel far.

  3. Update: I left a cash tip here and they charged me extra on the credit card. They were apologetic and promised me to refund it but still nothing.

  4. I came in solo, again, on a Thursday night around 7PM. There was a wait for groups, but because I was solo, I was seated at the bar immediately (yay!) I got the spicy tonkatsu and a sapporo draft. It came out promptly and piping hot. Needless to say, I inhaled it and was basically knocked over by how rich and delicious the broth was. It was like everything you'd want in a broth–richly and complexly flavored, amazing umami savoriness, and it smelled just as good. The topping were fresh, the egg was flavorful and perfectly cooked, and the noodles were cooked just right. I could eat this stuff everyday. The only bad thing about summer will be that I'm going to be sweating bullets every time I inhale a bowl of ramen until it's winter again.

This is basically the only place that I get ramen anymore.

  5. Came here about a week ago with about 8 members from the feature film "Barry". The restaurant was trendy but intimate. The kitchen itself is open to the restaurant so you can watch as your food is being made.

We were quickly seated at the front right by the open storefront window. The seats themselves were stools with plenty of soft padding. We were served quickly and after a short deliberation had ordered our food. The food itself was ramen bowls which we received in under 8 minutes after ordering. This is good as we only had 30 minutes to eat.

I personally ordered the spicy tongatsu ramen. It was delicious but unfortunately I felt it landed more on the mild side rather then spicy. The rest of the crew ordered a mix of veggies and normal tongatsu ramen.

The server was attentive and pleasant. Overall a wonderful meal given our constraints.

I would definitely return if I am in the area again.

  6. As you may know (by all the reviews I have written on yelp!), I'm a big fan of traditional tonkotsu-based ramen. There is a standard to be be upheld: the taste of the broth, the thickness (or thinness) of the noodles and how cooked they are, the amount of scallions and how they're cut, the soft boil egg (it should never be an additional cost), the bamboo shoots, and, of course, the chashu. You can compare and contrast between restaurants based on this standard, since most of them have a version of their own tonkotsu ramen.

Well, you DON'T know me! I am adventurous and mysterious…!!!

Today, I went with the Thai Coconut Green Curry Ramen. If I had to image what green curry in ramen form would be like, it would be this. I chose the pork broth because I thought it would be more hearty. It was very hearty. The soup tasted how Thai green curry should. There was just the right amount of green onions, cut in diagonals (as it should be!). The egg was perfect, being soft in the center with just an ever-so-small hint of runniness.

Two critiques, though. The chicken was bland. It just tasted like plain, cut up pieces of chicken thigh. The noodles, while good at absorbing the flavor of the soup, reminded me much of spaghetti noodles. They were thick and chewy, and that's a plus for me.

I also had a pork bun, which wasn't anything spectacular. It tastes good, but nothing that would differentiate for any other pork bun.

The white peach infused sake was also a nice compliment to the meal.

Overall, I'd come back here again. I'm actually interested in their sister restaurant specializing in udon and donburi next door, as well!

  7. Our go-to neighborhood ramen place. Always satisfying. Great food for the kids. Major key alert: we order a bowl of noodles and get Kaedema (extra noodles for +$2) to share with the kids. Much cheaper than ordering a bowl just for them that they won't finish anyways.

The spicy Tonkotsu is my favorite, but I've been ordering the regular Tonkotsu to share with my kids. Not as refined as Ippudo or as savory as Totto, but still a great bowl of Ramen. The soft-boiled eggs are cooked nicely (even better than Ippudo's, IMHO). The chashu is tender and flavorful. The noodles are nice and springy and the broth is well-rounded.

As for the appetizers, we always get the edamame. The green beans are also very good. Skip the pork buns. Not really worth it for the price.

    Friendly staff and quick service.

  8. Wish I'd taken a photo of my beautiful bowl. I love everything about this place. It's small, so we sat at the counter and watched the production take place. I ordered the vegetarian ramen with the mushroom based broth. It was so delicious. Not salty (although you can actually opt for less salt in your broth), fresh scallion, bean sprouts (fave), the tofu wasn't flavoured at all but i didn't mind as everything else had so much flavor. The corn tasted fresh, not like canned corn. The noodles were the perfect texture. Everything about this was great. Sad it's all the way in Harlem, but I will have to make that trip.

Also, the vegetarian bowl was a huge portion. I only got half-way through and took the rest to go. Too bad I forgot my leftovers at my friend's place. Guess that's my good deed for the day.
